Apple mixed reality is a plain-language way to describe the Apple Vision Pro experience: visionOS places digital apps and 3D content in the user’s surroundings, from windows alongside the visible room to fully immersive environments. Apple calls this approach spatial computing; “mixed reality” is descriptive wording, not the formal name Apple uses for the platform.
What is Apple mixed reality?
It is the blend of digital content with a person’s physical surroundings through Apple Vision Pro and its operating system, visionOS. Instead of limiting apps to a conventional screen, visionOS lets users position app windows and 3D content in their space. The experience can keep the room visible or become immersive, depending on the app and how it is presented.
Apple distinguishes the two main parts: Apple Vision Pro is the headset, while visionOS is the software that provides its spatial interface and app framework. Apple’s user guide describes navigating the device with eyes, hands, and voice.

Why does Apple call it spatial computing?
Apple’s product and developer materials use “spatial computing” for this way of interacting with digital content in physical space. “Mixed reality” is a useful general description of the combination of real surroundings and digital elements, but Apple’s cited materials do not establish it as an official Apple product category or a universal technical standard.

The distinction matters: “mixed reality” describes the kind of experience a reader may mean, while “spatial computing” is Apple’s terminology for the Vision Pro platform and its interaction model.
How does the experience range from shared space to full immersion?
visionOS supports different levels of immersion rather than one fixed presentation. Apple Developer describes apps using a Shared Space or a Full Space:

This range explains why the platform is more than a collection of floating windows. A user may arrange apps in view of the room, encounter a 3D object with depth, or enter an environment that substantially replaces the visible surroundings. Not every Vision Pro session is equally immersive.

Apple identifies eyes, hands, and voice as the primary ways users navigate Vision Pro. A user can look at an element, use a hand gesture to select or manipulate it, and use speech for supported actions. Apple’s 2023 launch announcement also said the three-dimensional interface responds dynamically to natural light and casts shadows to help users perceive scale and distance; those are Apple’s descriptions of the design, not independent performance measurements.

What else is part of Apple’s spatial-computing platform?
Immersive environments, spatial audio, and spatial media are platform capabilities that broaden the experience beyond placing conventional app windows in a room. They help explain what Vision Pro can do, but they are not the definition of mixed reality itself.
In its June 9, 2025 announcement of visionOS 26, Apple described spatial widgets anchored in a user’s space, spatial scenes that add depth to photos, shared spatial experiences, support for 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide-field-of-view video from named camera makers, and support for PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers. These examples illustrate the platform’s direction beyond floating windows. They were announced as visionOS 26 features; availability and compatibility may depend on software, hardware, region, and app support.

What do Apple’s Vision Pro specifications tell you?
In its June 5, 2023 Vision Pro launch announcement, Apple reported 23 million pixels across the two displays and said its R1 chip streams new images to the displays in 12 milliseconds. These are Apple’s dated device-specification claims, not general measures of mixed-reality quality or independently verified measurements of the platform.
