Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard (MHS) is a research-preview specification for connecting AI agents to programmable physical devices, such as lab and manufacturing equipment. It describes a common way to discover a device, understand its capabilities and safety limits, and issue commands. Anthropic announced the preview on August 27, 2026, sharing it initially with a group of research labs and advanced manufacturers; it is not described as a generally available commercial product.
What the Model Hardware Standard is designed to do
MHS aims to make different programmable devices easier for AI agents to work with through a standardized driver. The driver translates between a computer and a device, exposing common operations—for example, reading a temperature or setting one—and a standard format for discovering the device.
A driver can also describe the device in natural language, including its capabilities, adjustable parameters, and enforced safety limits. In principle, that gives an agent both an interface for acting and information about what the connected equipment can safely do.

The connected device must have a programmable interface. MHS does not make an otherwise unprogrammable device controllable on its own.

How an agent can control MHS hardware
Anthropic lists three ways an agent can interact with MHS: Model Context Protocol (MCP), a command-line interface (CLI), and code files or APIs. MCP is one possible route into MHS; it is not the standard itself. Anthropic says MHS is model-agnostic and can work with agent harnesses that use standard protocols.
For long-running or fast operations, commands can be chained in code. The device can then carry out a sequence without requiring the agent to reason after every action. An agent may sequence actions, monitor results, and change parameters as conditions change.
What early demonstrations show
Genentech assay proof of concept
Anthropic says Genentech researchers implemented and tested an MHS proof of concept for a BCA protein assay. The workflow coordinated a liquid handler, a robotic arm, and a plate reader. This is an early partner example, not evidence of broad or independently validated performance across laboratories.

Laser adjustment with camera feedback
Anthropic also describes exploratory laser adjustment using camera feedback. After learning a sequence of adjustments, the workflow could package it as a deterministic script. This illustrates a potential division of labor: an agent can help develop a procedure, while code executes the resulting sequence more predictably.

The announcement names microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, lasers, and cameras as examples of equipment relevant to MHS. It does not establish that every device in those categories is compatible; each still needs a programmable interface and an appropriate driver.
What MHS does not remove: physical-world risk and oversight
Anthropic cautions that current language models have limitations in spatial and physical reasoning and still require expert oversight. In the Genentech example, researchers had to guide Claude to recognize that sample foaming was a physical failure requiring a physical correction, rather than a software bug.

That distinction matters in practice: a software interface can expose commands and data, but it cannot guarantee that an agent correctly interprets what is happening in the physical process. Any deployment therefore needs application-specific safety evaluation and qualified human supervision.

The announcement does not provide a product comparison or a published evaluation framework. Based on the design it describes, teams considering a workflow can assess these practical questions:

- Does each device have a programmable interface, and can a driver expose the necessary controls and readings?
- Does the driver clearly describe the device’s capabilities, adjustable parameters, and enforced safety limits?
- Would MCP, a CLI, or code files and APIs fit the existing agent setup and workflow?
- Can long or fast operations be safely sequenced in code, and what should happen if readings or conditions change?
- What expert oversight and application-specific safety evaluations are needed before the workflow operates equipment?
These questions help distinguish interface compatibility from operational readiness: a device being controllable through a driver does not by itself establish that an entire process is safe or reliable.

Anthropic says the preview is being shared with an initial group of research labs and advanced manufacturers. It is working with partners across science, robotics, electronics, and manufacturing on safety evaluations and best practices before making MHS open source. The announcement gives no release date, access fee, or purchasable MHS product.
Anthropic names Hugging Face, which is adding MHS support in LeRobot, and Raspberry Pi, which enabled integration across products after tests using a Camera MHS Driver, among its early adopters. These partner activities do not amount to a general release or establish compatibility for all products from either organization.
Anthropic also says connecting devices in a lab or manufacturing facility typically takes weeks or months, and that MHS could reduce the work to hours or minutes. Those are Anthropic’s qualitative claims in its announcement, not results from a disclosed controlled study: the announcement provides no study design, sample size, or independent validation.
