Anthropic’s 2026 Usage Policy update adds examples of deceptive influence campaigns, including hiding who is behind a message, amplifying content through fake accounts or posts, and building infrastructure for such campaigns. The official announcement does not specifically say the update targets fabricated websites or other fake sources created to sway AI answers.
What changed in Claude’s Usage Policy?
Anthropic says it updates its Usage Policy annually in response to changing model capabilities and customer feedback. The 2026 update adds examples to help explain how existing rules apply to Claude’s capabilities; the company says the behaviors behind those examples were already prohibited under policy sections covering deceptive campaigns, surveillance, and privacy. Anthropic’s announcement describes the update.
Examples of deceptive influence activity
- Concealing who is behind a message or campaign.
- Amplifying content through fake accounts or posts.
- Creating tools or infrastructure to support influence campaigns.
These examples concern deceptive efforts to influence people or public discussion. They clarify how the policy applies to certain conduct; they do not establish a new technical safeguard or a change to how Claude evaluates sources.

Does Anthropic specifically mention fake sources meant to sway AI answers?
No such specific connection appears in the official policy announcement. It does not expressly identify fabricated websites, source poisoning, or efforts to manipulate AI-generated answers as the target of this update. The headline’s wording therefore goes beyond what the announcement establishes: the confirmed change is added examples about deceptive influence campaigns, not a named policy against fake-source websites designed to affect AI answers.

Can Claude still produce misleading answers?
Yes. Anthropic’s Help Center says Claude can give incorrect or misleading responses, a problem it describes as hallucination, and advises users not to treat Claude as a singular source of truth—especially for high-stakes advice. That warning is separate from the Usage Policy update: it concerns the reliability of Claude’s answers, not whether the new examples specifically address fake sources or whether the update improves factual accuracy. Anthropic’s Help Center guidance explains the limitation.
