An RBI repo-rate hike can put upward pressure on banks’ deposit rates, but it does not require every bank to raise savings-account and fixed-deposit rates immediately—or by the same amount. The repo rate is a policy rate; the rate a depositor earns is set through each bank’s own offers and terms.
What the repo rate tells you—and what it does not
The Reserve Bank of India’s repo rate is a monetary-policy benchmark, not the interest rate automatically paid on your savings balance or fixed deposit. RBI publishes the repo rate separately from savings-deposit and term-deposit rates, and tracks how policy-rate changes are transmitted to banks’ deposit and lending rates. That transmission occurs through bank pricing decisions; it is not a mechanical adjustment to every customer account. RBI’s rate data and its annual-report material on rate transmission show those rates as distinct measures.
RBI rate figures are dated benchmarks, not bank quotes
The RBI current-rates snapshot marked as at 1:00 p.m. on July 10, 2026, listed a 5.25% policy repo rate and a 2.50% savings-deposit rate. It also listed term-deposit rates above one year in a range of 6.00%–6.60%. These are RBI-published observations, not guaranteed rates for every bank, depositor, deposit size, or tenure. Check the RBI rate page for the dated snapshot; for an actual offer, check the bank’s current rate card and terms.

Will savings-account rates go up after an RBI rate hike?
They may, but there is no basis here to promise an immediate or one-for-one increase. Banks decide whether and when to change savings-account pricing, and individual offers can differ. A policy hike can influence banks’ funding conditions and pricing choices, but the customer-facing result depends on the bank’s decision.
To see whether your account rate changed, look for the bank’s published savings-rate schedule and confirm the effective date and any balance conditions. Do not assume that a repo-rate announcement alone changes the rate credited to your account.

What happens to a new fixed deposit?
A new fixed-deposit rate is the bank’s offer for a particular booking date, tenure, and applicable customer or deposit category. A repo hike may contribute to banks revising those offers, but it does not tell you what your bank currently pays or when a change will take effect. Compare the rate on the bank’s current schedule with the rate shown during the booking process, and confirm that the quoted offer applies to a new deposit with your chosen tenure and eligibility.

What happens to an existing fixed deposit?
Do not assume a repo-rate hike changes the rate on a deposit you have already booked. Check your deposit advice and the terms that apply to that specific deposit to establish its rate and conditions. Contract-specific exceptions are not established by the general RBI rate figures discussed here, so ask the bank if the advice or terms do not resolve your case.
