An Apple Home hub is the device that stays at home and keeps your Apple Home setup available when your iPhone is elsewhere. It enables away-from-home control, invitations for other household members, and automations that run without your phone being present.

HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs during setup. An Apple TV becomes one after you add it to a room in the Home app. On Apple’s latest Home architecture, an iPad cannot serve as a home hub.

What an Apple Home hub actually does

Your iPhone is useful for configuring a home, but it is not normally present to coordinate every request. A home hub provides the always-at-home connection between the Home app, Apple’s cloud services and compatible accessories on your local network. It remains powered on, connected to your home network and associated with your Apple Account.

Apple Support describes the purpose this way: “Set up a home hub to control your smart home accessories while you’re away from home, share control of your accessories with others, and automate your accessories to do what you want, when you want.” Those are three separate capabilities, although they depend on the same resident device.

Remote control when you are away

When you tap a light, lock or scene in the Home app while away, the request is relayed through the home hub to the accessory. For iPhone remote access, Apple requires the iPhone and hub to use the same Apple Account, with Home enabled in iCloud settings. Without a functioning hub, the Home app can still control compatible devices locally when your iPhone is at home, but away-from-home control is unavailable.

Shared control for household members

A home owner can invite other people to control the home. The hub keeps the home available for those authorized users even when the owner is not present. Permissions still come from the Home app: an invitation does not give a guest unrestricted access to every Apple Account or device.

Automations that run without your phone

The hub executes Home automations at the home. A phone does not need to remain on the premises for a scheduled light, a motion response or a scene triggered by another accessory. The exact triggers and actions depend on what the accessory and its Apple Home integration expose.

How the hub-and-accessory connection works

Accessories communicate with the home hub over the technologies they support, such as Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Thread or a manufacturer bridge that presents devices to Apple Home. The hub handles the Home app’s local coordination and the connection needed for remote requests. If the hub loses power or home-network access, local accessory behavior may continue for some devices, but remote access and hub-dependent automations can stop until the hub reconnects.

Apple’s current documentation is version-sensitive: its remote-control guidance is labeled for iOS 26, its automation guidance for iOS 27, and its HomePod guide for HomePod software 26 or later. Menu names and supported hardware can change, so use the labels shown on your devices rather than older screenshots that mention retired options.

Which Apple devices can be a home hub?

Device How it becomes a hub Thread role When it makes sense
HomePod mini It becomes a hub automatically when set up in the home. Apple lists it as a Thread-enabled hub example. You want a compact speaker and a hub for Apple Home, including Thread-based accessories.
HomePod It becomes a hub automatically when set up in the home. Apple lists HomePod (2nd generation) as a Thread-enabled hub example. You already want a full-size HomePod and need hub capability.
Apple TV Add it to a room in the Home app. Apple’s setup instructions also use Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room. Apple specifically lists Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi‑Fi + Ethernet as a Thread-enabled example. You already use an Apple TV and want it to provide the hub function as well.
iPad Not supported as a home hub on Apple’s latest Home architecture. Do not plan an iPad as Thread infrastructure for this purpose. Use it as a Home app control screen, not as the resident hub.

Availability of HomePod and Apple TV varies by country or region. The presence of a “hub” label should not be your only buying criterion: first check whether you already own an eligible device, then consider whether you need Thread support or also want the device’s speaker or television functions.

Do you need to buy a hub?

You need a supported home hub for reliable away-from-home control, Home automations that must run while your phone is absent, and adding Matter accessories to Apple Home. You may already have one: a configured HomePod, HomePod mini or eligible Apple TV can provide the function without a separate box.

You probably already have what you need if

  • A HomePod or HomePod mini appears in the correct Home and remains powered on.
  • An Apple TV is added to a room in the Home app and connected to your home network.
  • Your iPhone and the hub use the same Apple Account, and Home is enabled in iCloud.

Consider a new device if

  • You have no supported device that can stay at home and powered on.
  • Your planned accessories use Thread or Matter and you need a Thread-capable hub.
  • You want the hub’s other role, such as a smart speaker or Apple TV, rather than purchasing a device solely because it says “hub.”

Setting up a HomePod or HomePod mini as the hub

HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs as part of their normal setup. Only the home owner can add a HomePod to the Home app for this purpose.

  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
  1. Place the HomePod or HomePod mini in the home where it will remain, connect it to power and complete setup with the owner’s Apple Account.
  2. Confirm that it appears in the intended Home in the Home app and that the device is connected to the home Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Open the Home app and check the home’s hub status. Keep the device powered and connected; moving it outside the home removes the always-at-home connection the service requires.
  4. For Matter or Thread accessories, verify that the model you are using is a Thread-capable hub. Apple lists HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) among its Thread-enabled examples.

Setting up an Apple TV as a home hub

Apple TV does not become a hub merely because it is signed in to television services. It must be added to a room in the Home app, and only the home owner can perform that setup.

  1. Connect the Apple TV to the home network and sign it in with the Apple Account used for the Home.
  2. On the Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room, then choose the room where the Apple TV is located.
  3. Open the Home app on the owner’s iPhone and confirm that the Apple TV is listed in the home and assigned to that room.
  4. Leave the Apple TV powered and connected to the home network. Sleep mode is normal; unplugging it or disconnecting its network removes its hub availability.
  5. If you need Thread for Matter or Thread accessories, check the exact model and configuration. Apple’s listed example is Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi‑Fi + Ethernet; not every Apple TV configuration should be assumed to provide Thread.

Account, network and security requirements

Remote access depends on identity as well as hardware. Apple’s requirements include the same Apple Account on the iPhone and home hub and Home enabled in iCloud. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also directs users to enable iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication.

  • Home owner: the owner adds the HomePod or Apple TV and manages invitations.
  • Stable power: the hub must remain powered at home.
  • Home Wi‑Fi: the hub must stay connected to the network used by the accessories.
  • Apple Account alignment: the iPhone controlling the home remotely and the hub must use the same account for the owner’s setup.
  • iCloud security: keep iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication enabled as Apple requests for Home troubleshooting.

What can trigger an Apple Home automation?

The Home app supports several trigger categories. You choose the trigger, conditions where offered, and one or more accessory actions or scenes. A trigger does not guarantee that every accessory can participate; capabilities are determined by the accessory and its Apple Home integration.

Time of day

A scheduled automation can run at a clock time or around a natural event such as sunset. For example, a hallway light can turn on at sunset and turn off at a later time. The hub evaluates the schedule at home, so your iPhone does not need to be present.

People arriving or leaving

Location-based automations can react when people arrive at or leave the home. You might use an arrival event to activate an entry scene or a departure event to turn off selected lights. These automations depend on location sharing and the people included in the Home settings.

An accessory being controlled

One accessory action can start another scene or action. A door-lock event, for example, can trigger an entry-light scene. Design these carefully: a lock event may happen for several reasons, and an automation should not create an unsafe or surprising response.

Sensor detection

Sensors can trigger actions when they detect motion or another supported condition. A motion sensor in a hallway could switch on nearby lighting. The available event types and timing controls vary by sensor model.

Matter and Thread: when hub capability matters

Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. A Matter device using Wi‑Fi may still need the hub for Home app integration and remote operation. A Thread-based Matter accessory additionally needs Thread-capable infrastructure.

Apple’s documentation names HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi‑Fi + Ethernet as examples of Thread-capable hub choices and notes that a supported third-party border router can provide Thread. Apple also lists HomePod (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K among Thread-enabled examples in its automation guidance. Check the exact accessory and hub combination before purchase; “Matter” identifies an interoperability standard, while “Thread” identifies a particular low-power network transport.

Why Thread changes the decision

  • Thread accessories need a Thread-capable home hub or another supported Thread border-router arrangement for Home automations, notifications and away-from-home control.
  • A non-Thread hub may still be suitable for Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth accessories, but it should not be assumed to satisfy a Thread requirement.
  • Model and configuration matter, especially for Apple TV. Use Apple’s current compatibility list rather than relying on a product family name alone.

Using the home while you are away

After setup, open the Home app from a cellular or other remote connection and select an accessory or scene. The request travels through the home hub. A successful response depends on the hub being online, the accessory being reachable and the accessory supporting the requested action.

Remote control is different from viewing every device’s live status. A hub can relay a command, but an accessory that is offline, out of range or experiencing a manufacturer service outage may not respond. Avoid treating a delayed status update as proof that a lock, heater or other safety-critical device changed state; verify the accessory’s current status when the Home app reports an error.

Troubleshooting an unavailable hub

The Home app says the home has no hub

  1. Check that a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV is actually present in the home.
  2. Verify that the device is powered and connected to the home Wi‑Fi network.
  3. For Apple TV, confirm it has been assigned to a room through the Home app and through Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room.
  4. Confirm the owner’s Apple Account and iCloud Home settings on the iPhone.
  5. Install current software updates on the hub and iPhone, then restart the hub if it remains offline.

Remote control works intermittently

  • Test the home network from another device; a hub cannot relay commands if its network connection is unstable.
  • Move a Wi‑Fi accessory or its bridge within reliable coverage, or check the accessory manufacturer’s connection status.
  • Check whether the problem affects one accessory or the entire home. A single-device failure usually points to that accessory, while a whole-home failure points toward the hub, network or account.

An automation does not run

  • Confirm the trigger actually occurred and that the participating accessory supports that trigger type.
  • Check that the hub was powered and online at the scheduled or sensor event time.
  • For Thread devices, verify that a Thread-capable hub or supported border router is present.
  • Review conditions, people settings and time windows in the automation; an unmet condition prevents the action even when the trigger occurred.

Practical choice checklist

Use this order when deciding whether to buy hardware:

  1. Inventory the Apple devices already at home. An eligible HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV may already satisfy the hub requirement.
  2. List the accessories you intend to add and identify whether each uses Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Matter or Thread.
  3. If Thread appears anywhere in the plan, select a hub configuration Apple identifies as Thread-capable.
  4. Choose the device whose other function you will use: HomePod as a speaker or Apple TV as a television platform.
  5. Confirm regional availability and current software compatibility before purchase.
  6. Set up the device in the owner’s Home, keep it powered and connected, and test one remote command and one automation.

The essential distinction is simple: a hub is the resident coordinator, not merely another Home app screen. HomePod and HomePod mini provide that role automatically after setup; Apple TV provides it after room assignment; iPad does not provide it on Apple’s current Home architecture. Choose based on the remote, automation, Matter and Thread capabilities you actually need.
