A phone agent is an AI assistant that can take actions through supported phone apps, not just answer questions. It might arrange several steps to order food or add groceries to a cart, but what it can do depends on the apps and actions available, your device and region, and the permissions you grant. An agent can also make mistakes, so important actions still need your attention.
What makes a phone assistant an agent?
A conventional assistant can respond to a question or provide instructions. An agent can also carry out a task by using an app or an app function on your behalf. Google describes its Gemini feature as a way to “handle your multi-step tasks in select Android apps.” That wording matters: the feature is selective, and it does not mean an agent can operate every app or complete every request.
For example, Google’s help page describes asking Gemini to book a ride, order food, or add groceries to a cart on supported Android devices. The agent performs actions; it is not merely telling you which buttons to press. You should still check what it did and whether the result is correct.
How can an agent take action in an app?
There is no single architecture used by every phone agent. Two documented Android patterns show how these systems can work, and they are not interchangeable.

Structured app functions
Android AppFunctions let an app expose defined capabilities that an AI agent or assistant can discover and invoke. These self-describing functions provide a structured way to request an app action, rather than having the agent infer what to do from the screen. Android’s developer examples include calendar, notes, and tasks, as well as a Samsung Gallery integration. For the documented AppFunctions mechanism, execution is local on the device; that fact should not be generalized to every feature or the full data path of an AI assistant. Availability is limited by device and rollout. Android Developers describes the AppFunctions approach and its role in Android 17.
Screen automation
In Google’s documented Gemini implementation, screen automation uses an on-device virtual phone environment to open and interact with app screens. The task can run in the background, with progress shown to the user; where supported, the user can stop the task or take control. Because the agent is interacting with a user interface rather than invoking a defined function, it may encounter screens or choices it interprets incorrectly. Google labels screen automation beta and limits it to selected apps and devices. Google’s Gemini help page explains the feature, permissions, and current examples.

What sets the limits on what an agent can do?
- App support: The agent can use only apps or app functions that the implementation supports.
- Device and rollout: A feature may be limited to selected devices or preview rollouts. Google’s sources do not provide one exhaustive eligibility list covering every device, region, app, and agent feature.
- Region and account eligibility: Availability can vary, so a feature described in help documentation may not appear for every user.
- Permissions: For Gemini screen automation, permission is required separately for each app. Google says users can choose to always allow, ask each time, or disallow access.
- Task boundaries and oversight: A request may require a choice or confirmation the agent cannot safely make for you. The feature’s supported controls and actions determine whether it can proceed.
Google’s examples include additional shopping, travel, and ticket tasks on named newer Samsung devices; Android’s developer materials describe separate AppFunctions integrations. Those examples illustrate selective support, not a promise that any Android phone can perform them. Check the current official feature documentation for the exact device and feature you intend to use.
What can go wrong, and how should you supervise it?
An agent can misunderstand a request, tap the wrong control, order the wrong item, or report completion inaccurately. Google also warns about prompt injection: a website, message, document, or other content the agent reads may contain malicious instructions intended to manipulate it. Google’s safeguards do not guarantee protection from every risk.

- Watch the task progress instead of assuming the agent has done exactly what you intended.
- Review choices, quantities, destinations, and other important details before allowing a consequential action to proceed.
- Stop the task or take control when the agent appears to be following the wrong path, where those controls are available.
- Verify the outcome in the app, especially when the result affects money, travel, or another important commitment.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help states that “LLM experiences (Gemini Apps included) can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual.” That warning applies both to answers and to claims that an action has been completed. What happens to information the agent can see?
Screen automation may take screenshots containing information visible in the app. Google’s privacy documentation says that, when Keep Activity is on, these screenshots may be reviewed by trained reviewers and used to improve Google services. That is a feature- and setting-specific disclosure, not proof that every phone agent handles data the same way.

Google advises users not to enter login or payment information into Gemini chats and not to use screen automation for emergencies or tasks involving sensitive information. Check the privacy information and settings for the particular assistant and feature you use. “On your phone” does not by itself mean that all AI processing or data handling stays on the device: Android documents local execution for AppFunctions, while Gemini’s screen-automation privacy disclosures describe screenshot handling governed by settings.
How to think about phone agents in practice
Matthew McCullough, Google’s Vice President of Product Management for Android Developer, described the shift this way: “Instead of opening apps to do tasks step-by-step, they’re asking AI to do the heavy lifting for them.” That is Google’s framing of the product direction, not independent evidence about how many people use agents.

For a low-stakes task in a supported app, an agent can save you from navigating each step yourself. For purchases, bookings, sensitive information, or anything urgent, treat it as an assistant whose work needs review—not an autonomous substitute for your judgment. Before relying on a feature, confirm that it is available for your device and region, understand the app permissions it requests, and know how to stop or take over the task.
