An AI agent’s access depends on the browser context it is given. A separate hosted browser generally has its own tabs, cookies, and sign-ins; an agent connected to your personal browser profile may be able to inspect open tabs, cookies, session storage, local storage, and other browser data. If it can use a signed-in session, it may also act within that account’s site context. The practical question is therefore not simply whether an agent can access cookies, but which browser it is connected to, what permissions it has, and whether you approve each consequential action.

What browser access actually gives an AI agent

A browser agent can read page content and interact with the controls available in its browser context. That might mean reading a public webpage, opening a form, or working inside a site where someone is already signed in. The agent’s reach is bounded by the browser connection and integration: not every agent receives the same data or can perform the same actions.

When a browser holds an authenticated session, the site may treat activity in that browser as activity by the signed-in user. Depending on the site and the integration’s controls, an agent could read private pages, change settings, send a message, or advance a transaction. Those are examples of what may be possible, not a promise that every agent can do all of them. The site’s own permissions and the agent’s available controls matter.

  • Page access: the agent can view content and interact with the page it is allowed to use.
  • Browser-profile access: the agent may be able to use or inspect data associated with the connected profile, such as tabs, cookies, or browser storage.
  • Account authority: if the browser is already signed in, the agent may be able to do things the site permits in that authenticated session, subject to integration limits and confirmations.

These capabilities are related but not interchangeable. Reading a public page does not establish access to your local browser profile. Conversely, a connection to a personal profile can expose more than the currently visible webpage.

Can an AI agent access your cookies?

Sometimes. The answer depends on how the agent is connected, so do not assume that every browser agent can see your personal cookies—or that none can.

Separate hosted browser

OpenAI’s Cloud Browser help documentation describes a browser that uses its own browser data, cookies, and signed-in sessions. It does not use the user’s personal browser’s open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions, or existing sign-ins. An agent operating there therefore does not automatically inherit the accounts already signed in on your computer. If you sign in to a site in that hosted browser, however, the agent may be able to work in that hosted session, depending on its permissions.

Connected personal browser profile

Chrome DevTools’ auto-connect documentation says an agent can access data in the connected Chrome profile, including open tabs, session storage, local storage, cookies, and other information surfaced through browser APIs. It also says the agent can read, inspect, debug, and modify browser content. Connecting a profile is thus materially different from giving an agent a new, isolated browser window: it can expose live browser state and data associated with that profile.

Other session-sharing arrangements

An integration may pass page content, expose a site-specific tool, or share a session in some other way. Do not infer profile-wide access from the word “browser,” or infer isolation from the fact that an agent runs remotely. Check the product’s documentation for the actual session model, permissions, and data it can reach.

What changes when the browser is signed in?

A signed-in session gives the browser an authenticated context. Chrome’s agent security guidance notes that agents operating in a browser can work within a user’s authenticated session. In practical terms, an action that would be available to the signed-in user may also be available to an agent, unless the integration or site blocks it or requires an additional check.

That can make useful tasks easier: an agent may be able to work with an application that requires an account rather than stopping at its public landing page. It also raises the stakes of seemingly ordinary browser operations. A click may save a setting, send a communication, or move a process forward. A request to “visit this site” is not automatically permission to make a purchase, transfer money, send a message, or modify important account data.

Think of the agent as operating in the browser context you granted, not as having a separate identity that the site necessarily distinguishes from yours. The site may see an authenticated user’s session; it may not know whether a person or an agent initiated a particular action.

Why browser content can be a security risk

Agents may encounter instructions embedded in pages, comments, or tool outputs. Some may be malicious or misleading—for example, text that attempts to redirect the agent, request disclosure of information, or prompt an action the user did not ask for. The agent should treat such material as page content to evaluate, not as authority to override the user’s task.

Chrome for Developers describes two WebMCP attack paths. One is a malicious tool manifest: a tool’s name, parameters, or description may contain hidden or deceptive instructions. The other is contaminated output: a response that appears to come from a useful site or tool may include hostile instructions, such as text supplied in a user comment. The WebMCP security article is dated June 9, 2026; its tool-security page reports an update on September 1, 2026.

This is a risk, not a claim that any suspicious phrase will succeed. The underlying difficulty is that language models process instructions and data together, and model safeguards alone cannot guarantee protection against indirect prompt injection. Chrome’s guidance recommends treating page and tool content as untrusted, narrowing which origins the agent may access, and checking actions at the point of execution. It does not establish a universal attack rate or a mitigation that guarantees safety.

Cookies, credentials, and the difference between them

A cookie used to maintain a session is sensitive because access to the active session may permit account access. That does not mean every cookie contains a password, nor does the available guidance quantify the chance that a particular cookie will be stolen or misused. The important practical point is that access to a connected profile can expose cookies and other session-related browser data; treat that access as sensitive even if you never type a password into the agent.

A cookie’s transport settings address only part of the risk. OWASP’s Session Management Cheat Sheet explains that the Secure attribute instructs a browser to send a cookie only over encrypted HTTPS connections. That helps protect transmission over an unencrypted connection; it does not prevent an agent from misusing an authenticated browser context, protect every form of browser data, or replace controls on what the agent may do.

Credentials are the sign-in values themselves. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance recommends handling them through a dedicated sign-in flow rather than ordinary chat or task text. For an implementation, it calls for showing the destination so the user can verify it, masking entered values, keeping them out of logs and analytics, clearing the form after submission, and disabling automatic retries for credential submissions.

Those safeguards matter because a user should be able to see where credentials are going and should not have to put them into a general conversation that may be processed as task input. If an agent asks for a password in ordinary chat, do not assume that the request uses a protected authentication mechanism. Verify the destination and the integration’s documented credential handling before entering anything.

How to choose a browser setup

Decision Separate hosted session Connected personal profile
Existing personal cookies and sign-ins Uses its own browser data and sessions, according to OpenAI’s Cloud Browser documentation. Chrome’s auto-connect documentation says the connected profile’s cookies and storage may be accessible.
Browser context Separate from local tabs and history in the Cloud Browser description. Can include active tabs, extensions, and live application state in the documented Chrome feature.
When it may fit When the task can be completed in a new browser session, with any required sign-in performed there. When the task specifically requires state or a sign-in already present in the user’s browser; this is an inference from the feature descriptions.
Main concern Check the requested destination and use a dedicated credential flow if sign-in is needed. Grant profile access only when the task justifies the broader exposure; restrict origins and confirm important state changes.

The safer default for a task that does not need your personal tabs or existing sign-ins is a separate browser context. A connected personal profile may be more convenient when the exact live state matters, but convenience comes with wider access. Choose based on the minimum browser context the task actually needs, not on the assumption that all browser connections are equivalent.

Controls users should apply before and during a task

  1. Establish the session model. Find out whether the agent uses a separate hosted browser, a connected personal profile, or another session-sharing method. If the documentation does not make this clear, do not treat the connection as isolated.
  2. Use the least-exposed browser context that works. Prefer a separate profile or hosted browser when the job does not need your personal sign-ins, tabs, or saved browser state. If you connect a personal profile, do so only for a task that needs it.
  3. Restrict the allowed origins. Limit the agent to the sites needed for the task, especially when it can use an authenticated session. Chrome recommends origin restrictions to reduce exposure to malicious or unrelated sites and the risk of data exfiltration.
  4. Keep untrusted content in its place. A page, comment, or tool response can supply information for the task, but it should not be allowed to silently change the user’s instructions. Chrome describes “spotlighting” as one technique for distinguishing untrusted content and recommends acknowledging untrusted-content hints.
  5. Confirm consequential actions individually. Review what the agent plans to do before it sends a message, changes important account data, or advances a transaction. Approval to open a site is not approval for every action on that site. Chrome advises confirming actions and treating tools as state-changing unless they are clearly read-only; OpenAI notes that origin approval does not confirm individual actions.
  6. Minimize what you disclose. Give a tool only the personal information it needs to complete the task. Avoid placing unrelated account details, secrets, or personal records in page fields or task instructions.
  7. Review and clean up the session. OpenAI’s computer-use guide tells applications to review saved browser activity and delete a session when finished. Its Cloud Browser help describes clearing browser data for an individual site or all sites. Use the cleanup options available in the specific integration rather than assuming session data disappears automatically.

What builders should do with credential and action flows

For application developers, safe design means more than adding a prompt that tells the model to be careful. The integration should limit where the agent can go, minimize the data passed to tools, distinguish untrusted page output from instructions, and check the action at the moment it could change state. Chrome recommends security evaluations to measure whether mitigations prevent unauthorized actions or data exfiltration, and production monitoring for signals such as token exhaustion, logs, trends, and user feedback. Its guidance does not provide a universal pass rate or benchmark.

OpenAI’s Agents API computer-use guide documents one specific approval and credential workflow. When a new origin requires approval, the application receives an approval request and presents the origin and reason so the user can approve, deny, or cancel. Authentication requests identify the credential origin, fields, and login options. The user supplies values through a dedicated event; the guide says those values stay outside the agent’s model input and are omitted from authentication response items in session history. After submission, the application should continue following events and verify that sign-in succeeded: accepting the credential submission does not prove that authentication worked.

This is an example of one documented API workflow, not a description of how all browser agents handle approval or credentials. When evaluating an integration, look for the actual destination-confirmation, masking, logging, retry, cleanup, and action-approval behavior it documents.

Is it safe to let an AI agent use your browser?

It can be reasonable when the browser context is appropriate, the allowed sites are limited, and meaningful actions require your confirmation. It is riskier to connect a personal profile without knowing what data is exposed, let an agent follow instructions found in untrusted page content, or allow changes and transactions without action-level review. No single cookie setting or model instruction resolves all of these risks.

Make the decision task by task. If a fresh browser session can do the job, avoid exposing a personal profile. If the task requires a signed-in account, understand what the agent can see and do in that session, use a protected credential flow, and keep approval for consequential actions separate from approval to visit a site.
