An A+ insurer financial strength rating is an agency’s opinion of an insurer’s ability to meet its obligations to policyholders. Its meaning depends on which agency assigned it: on A.M. Best’s scale, A+ is “Superior,” while other agencies define their own symbols and categories. It is not a guarantee that an insurer will pay every claim or that a policy is right for you.
What does an A+ rating mean?
A financial strength rating evaluates an insurer’s financial ability to meet insurance policy and contract obligations. A.M. Best says it assesses balance sheet strength, operating performance, and business profile using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Its process includes reviewing financial statements and other information, analyst work, ongoing monitoring, and rating committee decisions. A.M. Best’s Rating Service Definitions

What does the rating tell a policyholder?
A strong financial strength rating can be one input when considering whether an insurer appears financially positioned to meet its obligations. It is an opinion about the insurer’s financial strength—not an assessment of an individual policy’s suitability, coverage, price, or service.
- It does not determine whether a particular event is covered or whether a specific claim will be accepted.
- It does not tell you whether a policy’s exclusions, limits, deductibles, or premium fit your needs.

Why an A+ rating is not a guarantee
A.M. Best describes its ratings as forward-looking opinions that are subject to ongoing monitoring and surveillance. They may be changed, suspended, or withdrawn, and the agency says they are not facts or guarantees of future credit quality. So an A+ should not be translated into a percentage chance of nonpayment, a promise of solvency, or assurance that every claim will be paid. The rating is a point-in-time agency opinion, not a claim-level decision.
How to use the rating when comparing insurers
- Identify the agency. Check whether the grade is from A.M. Best, S&P, or another agency, then consult that agency’s own definition. Do not compare identical symbols as if their scales were interchangeable.
- Check the legal insurer and current status. Find the exact insurance company named in the policy—not just the parent-company or brand name—and verify its latest rating and status with the rating agency. Ratings can change, be suspended, or be withdrawn.
- Assess the policy separately. Compare covered risks, exclusions, limits, deductibles, premium, and service against your needs. A company-level financial strength rating does not evaluate those policy details.
