AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 announcement in June 2024 put the series’ XDNA 2 neural processing unit (NPU) at up to 50 peak NPU TOPS. That is a processor capability specification—not a promise that every AI app will run locally or finish tasks at a particular speed. On the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, AMD separately lists up to 80 overall TOPS, a broader figure that must not be confused with the NPU’s 50 TOPS.
What does 50 NPU TOPS mean?
TOPS means trillions of operations per second. In AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 launch materials, 50 TOPS describes the peak throughput of the processor’s NPU, the dedicated engine intended to accelerate neural-network workloads. AMD listed the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Ryzen AI 9 365 at up to 50 NPU TOPS in its June 2, 2024 Ryzen AI 300 announcement.

“Up to” matters: it is a peak specification, not a measure of sustained performance in a particular laptop or AI application. The number alone does not say whether an app supports the NPU, how much of a task it will handle, or how quickly the full system will complete that task.

For the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, AMD’s current product specifications distinguish the NPU from the overall system: the NPU is rated at up to 50 TOPS, while overall TOPS are listed at up to 80. These figures cover different scopes; 50 is not the HX 370’s total across every compute engine. See AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 specifications.

The 50 TOPS claim belongs to the consumer Ryzen AI 300 models named in the 2024 announcement. AMD later announced Ryzen AI PRO 300 models with up to 55 NPU TOPS, and in its CES 2026 announcement described Ryzen AI 400 and Ryzen AI PRO 400 families at up to 60 NPU TOPS. Those are separate product families and should not be read as changes to the original HX 370 or Ryzen AI 9 365 specification. Sources: AMD’s October 2024 Ryzen AI PRO 300 announcement and CES 2026 Ryzen AI 400 announcement.
What else is in the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370?
The NPU is only one part of the HX 370. AMD’s current specifications list a 12-core, 24-thread CPU, Radeon 890M graphics, a default TDP of 28 W, and configurable TDP from 15 W to 54 W. Laptop makers set the processor in a complete system, so cooling and power settings matter to the experience alongside the chip’s peak NPU capability.

AMD’s product page lists the HX 370’s launch date as July 28, 2025. That is distinct from the Ryzen AI 300 family announcement on June 2, 2024; the two dates refer to different events and should not be collapsed into one launch date.

It can support local AI workloads when the software is designed to use compatible hardware, but the 50 TOPS figure does not establish that any particular feature runs entirely on-device. App support, operating-system and software versions, workload design, and the laptop configuration all affect what happens. Confirm the requirements for the specific application or feature you want to use; do not infer universal compatibility from the NPU rating.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check which Ryzen AI 300 processor a laptop has
Check the exact configuration or SKU, rather than relying on a laptop family name. For example, ASUS lists Zenbook S 16 UM5606 configurations with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 as well as configurations with other processors on its US Zenbook S 16 UM5606 specifications page. The model name alone therefore does not identify the processor. ASUS’s page is a configuration example; it does not establish current stock or pricing, and availability can vary by region.

When comparing laptops for local AI use, look beyond the NPU number:
Quick Recap
- Processor: Confirm the exact Ryzen AI model and its stated NPU TOPS.
- Whole-system performance: Look for workload-specific results for the exact chassis and power mode; peak chip specifications do not show sustained behavior.
- Memory and design: Check RAM capacity and upgradeability, cooling, display, battery, weight, and ports against how you plan to use the laptop.
- Software fit: Verify that the intended AI application supports the NPU and the feature you need.
- Purchase details: Confirm the regional SKU, price, warranty, and availability with the seller or manufacturer.
