Allbirds’ “pivot to AI” was a plan to leave footwear behind and build an AI-compute infrastructure business—not to make AI shoes or launch a chatbot. The company announced a $50 million convertible financing facility on April 15, 2026, alongside plans to sell its footwear assets and develop GPU-as-a-Service and AI-native cloud offerings. By the end of June, the footwear sale had closed and the renamed Smartbird reported initial revenue from AI infrastructure leases, but equal costs of net revenue and continuing execution risks meant the filings did not establish a profitable business at scale.
What did Allbirds mean by “pivot to AI”?
Allbirds, Inc. described a capital-intensive shift into computing infrastructure. The company said it intended to use financing to acquire high-performance GPUs and server equipment, then provide customers with dedicated compute capacity through long-term leases or committed contracts. Its longer-term goal was GPU-as-a-Service and AI-native cloud services. In plain terms, it proposed renting computing power used for AI workloads—not selling a consumer AI product.
In its April 15, 2026 SEC-filed announcement, Allbirds said: “The rise of AI development and adoption has created unprecedented structural demand for specialized, high-performance compute that the market is struggling to meet.” It added: “NewBird AI is being built to help close that gap.” Those were the company’s claims about the market and its intended role, not findings from an independent market study. The filings cited here do not provide an independent market-wide statistic proving the claimed shortage or validating the demand thesis.

The comparison describes the business models, not a guarantee that the proposed one would succeed. Allbirds’ statement about the losses on footwear appears in its April 20, 2026 SEC filing; the buyer and assets transferred are described in the later company filing.

Was the $50 million financing $50 million of cash?
No. The April 15 announcement described a $50 million convertible financing facility expected to close in Q2 and subject to conditions. The April 20 Form 8-K characterized the financing as senior secured convertible notes, with initial tranches, conditions and a 12% annual interest rate. The facility amount should not be treated as $50 million of unrestricted equity cash received at announcement; later funding should be judged from the filings and dates that document it.
The company’s proposed name at announcement was “NewBird AI.” The April plan and its financing were forward-looking and subject to approvals, conditions and risks, rather than evidence that a fully operating AI-cloud business already existed.

What happened after the announcement?
- April 15, 2026: Allbirds announced the financing facility and its intended AI-compute direction.
- June 3, 2026: Shareholders approved the asset sale, charter amendment and Nasdaq share-issuance proposals, according to the company’s Form 8-K.
- June 9, 2026: The footwear asset sale closed. The Q2 filing says the buyer acquired specified footwear-related intellectual property, inventory, receivables and other assets.
- Quarter ended June 30, 2026: The Q2 filing, issued by the renamed Smartbird, Inc., reported initial AI infrastructure lease activity and financial results.
The Guardian reported an announced sale amount of $39 million on April 15. The SEC filing cited for the closing confirms the June 9 completion and identifies assets transferred; the cited lines do not state the cash consideration. The reported announcement amount and the filing’s confirmation of closing are therefore distinct facts.

Why did Allbirds stock soar “700 percent”?
Investors reacted sharply to the April 15 announcement, but “700 percent” describes an intraday move reported that day—not a verified closing return. The Guardian reported the stock up 582% around midday; Futurism reported a rise of more than 700% following the announcement and described the shares later stabilizing around $17. These are reports from different moments and frames, so they should not be combined into a single end-of-day figure.

The price spike records a dramatic market reaction to the announced plan. It does not demonstrate that investors had verified the company’s ability to execute, that the future business would be profitable, or that demand for AI infrastructure would translate into durable Smartbird revenue.
Did the pivot produce AI revenue?
The Q2 2026 filing provides evidence of early lease activity, not of a scaled or profitable operation. For the quarter ended June 30, Smartbird reported $2.758 million in net revenue and $2.758 million in costs of net revenue. The filing says those costs consisted of AI infrastructure leased in the period. The matching figures do not establish that the company earned a profit from the activity.

What risks remained?
Smartbird’s Q2 filing says management had previously disclosed substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern. It states that footwear-sale proceeds, convertible notes, at-the-market share sales, cost reductions and the AI infrastructure strategy alleviated that doubt for the twelve-month period following issuance of the Q2 statements. That is a time-bounded assessment, not a declaration that the underlying risks disappeared.
The same filing says the business plan’s success is uncertain and that further financing, asset sales, restructuring or reduced operations may be needed depending on outcomes. Moving from retail to compute changes the central execution problem: the company must fund, deploy and operate costly infrastructure and secure customers for it. The early lease figures do not resolve those risks.
