Giving a Discord bot long-term memory is useful only if the bot stores accurate, relevant facts and lets people control them. In a September 30, 2026 case study, Akiko’s operator, Motzumoto, described two failures: a loose extractor filled memory with junk, and another stored facts about what users had not disclosed. The fixes point to a broader lesson: validate what gets written, filter what gets recalled, and make stored memories visible and manageable.
What went wrong with Akiko’s memory?
Motzumoto’s account describes failures at two points in a persistent-memory system: deciding what to save and deciding what to surface later. The figures and outcomes below are the operator’s reports, not results from an independent audit or controlled evaluation. Read the case study on DEV Community.
A loose extractor filled storage with junk
Akiko’s first extractor used a loose pronoun pattern. It could capture text that matched the pattern without capturing a meaningful fact about a person. Motzumoto said “the memory was 97% junk”; after cleaning the stored rows, about 100 entries remained. Those are approximate, first-person system figures, not independently verified measurements.

That last distinction matters operationally. If a judgment temporarily cannot be made, an hourly job can retry it instead of letting a failed judgment silently become a permanent bad record.

Quickly start game chat on Discord, Team and Zoom, or stream on OBS, Streamlabs and Twitch platforms. The gaming microphone PC coming with 6.6ft-long detachable USB cable ensures no interruptions or connectivity issues, even if your computer host is under the desk.
- [Useful Accessories] The podcast microphone features durable construction. Anti-vibration shock mount with four rubber bands absorbs tremor from keyboard taps and mouse clicks. The detachable pop filter reduces plosives caused by excited speech during gaming. The stable tripod stand with rubber feet allows for optimal recording positioning via an adjustable thumbscrew, whether you're leaning back or in.
The bot stored what people had not said
A second failure was storing non-disclosure as a fact, such as “User has not shared their birthday”. Reducing the record’s priority did not solve the problem because recall did not filter on that flag. Motzumoto said the fix was to reject negative statements during extraction and add a recall-side filter as another defense.
The privacy concern is not just whether the statement is technically true. A bot that surfaces a record of what someone withheld can feel as if it is keeping a file on them. Motzumoto’s summary was: “Never store the absence of information.”
Why do both writing and recall need safeguards?
Write-time validation prevents low-quality candidates from accumulating in storage. Recall-time filtering provides a separate check on what reaches a response. Either one alone can leave a gap: filtering only at recall does not clean a growing store, while a write-time mistake can still require a defense at the point of use. As Motzumoto put it, “The write path needs a filter as strict as the read path.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Validate before saving: reject text that matches a pattern but does not express a useful, person-related fact.
- Represent uncertainty explicitly: keep “not yet judged” separate from accepted and rejected records so a temporary failure can be retried.
- Filter during recall: check candidates again before they influence a response.
- Do not turn absence into a personal fact: a missing disclosure is not a user attribute to preserve.
What controls did Akiko offer users?
Motzumoto says Akiko lets users list, add, delete, and export stored memories. The article also describes importing an export from another AI and condensing it into clean facts. These are features described by the operator; their runtime behavior was not independently tested.

For a user, list and export controls make retained information inspectable; deletion provides a way to remove it. For a developer, those controls make it possible for people to correct or manage the memory that may shape later interactions. Motzumoto’s advice is to provide list, delete, and export from the start rather than treating them as an afterthought.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does memory poisoning add to the risk?
Akiko’s two reported incidents were extraction and recall problems; Motzumoto did not describe them as an attack. A separate 2023 arXiv preprint on chatbot memory poisoning reports that, in its experimental setup, a chatbot was 328% more likely to respond with misinformation as fact when that misinformation had been placed in long-term memory. See the paper’s abstract. The reported percentage should not be projected onto Akiko or deployed Discord bots generally: the abstract alone does not provide enough methodological detail to establish that broader scope.
What should a developer take from the case?
Inspect production memory early rather than assuming a plausible extraction rule is producing useful records. Treat extraction quality, retry behavior, recall filtering, and user controls as parts of one system: a persistent store can preserve mistakes just as readily as it preserves useful facts. Akiko’s account is a specific operator’s experience, but its practical warning is clear: persistence alone does not make memory trustworthy.
