Preserving an AI model’s weights does not mean the model will remain available as a live service. Anthropic says it will preserve weights for all publicly released models and future models used significantly internally for at least the lifetime of the company, but it does not promise that every retired model will continue to be hosted. For anyone building around a model, the key distinction is between retained weights, an operating endpoint and access through a particular product or cloud platform.

What happens when an AI model is deprecated?

“Deprecated” generally signals that a provider plans to end support; a later shutdown can make the model endpoint unavailable. The labels and lifecycle stages are provider-specific, so check the notice for the exact model and platform you use. Google’s Gemini API documentation, for example, distinguishes deprecation from shutdown; those terms describe Google’s API process, not a universal industry standard. Google Gemini API deprecations.

Anthropic classifies models as active, legacy, deprecated or retired, and publishes dates and recommended replacements. Its documentation says it notifies customers with active deployments and provides at least 60 days’ notice before retiring publicly released models. That schedule may not apply when a model is accessed through a cloud partner, since platforms such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud set their own lifecycle schedules. Anthropic model deprecations.

Does preserving model weights mean you can still use the model?

No. Weights are the model’s learned parameters; retaining them is different from running the infrastructure and services needed to answer requests. Anthropic’s stated commitment is: “As an initial step in this direction, we are committing to preserving the weights of all publicly released models, and all models that are deployed for significant internal use moving forward for, at minimum, the lifetime of Anthropic as a company.” The statement appears in Anthropic’s article, “Commitments on model deprecation and preservation”.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Anthropic says retaining weights means it is not “irreversibly closing any doors” to making past models available again. That leaves open a possible route to future access; it does not guarantee that a retired model will be restored or that its endpoint will stay online. Anthropic describes broader public access to retired models as something it is exploring, noting that the cost of serving scales roughly linearly with each model served. Anthropic’s preservation commitment; Anthropic’s Opus 3 retirement update.

What the commitment covers

  • Included: weights for all publicly released models and models deployed for significant internal use going forward.
  • Duration: at least the lifetime of Anthropic as a company—not a promise of preservation after the company ceases to exist.
  • Not promised: continued hosted access for every retired model, or a particular restoration date or method.

How much notice do AI providers give before retiring models?

Notice periods differ by provider and model category. These are published provider policies, not a shared industry rule or a legal standard.

Anthropic models At least 60 days before retiring publicly released models, according to Anthropic’s deprecations documentation. Cloud partners set their own schedules; confirm the dates for the platform where the model is deployed. Anthropic documentation.
OpenAI API models Normally at least six months for generally available models and at least three months for specialized variants, according to OpenAI’s deprecations page. OpenAI allows faster retirement for safety or compliance concerns. Keep API changes distinct from retirements in ChatGPT. OpenAI API deprecations; OpenAI ChatGPT model retirements.
Google Gemini API Documentation distinguishes deprecation, when ending support is announced, from shutdown, when the model is turned off and its endpoint unavailable. These lifecycle terms and schedules apply to the Gemini API; they should not be assumed to define other providers’ processes. Google Gemini API deprecations.

Which platform’s retirement date should you check?

A model name alone is not enough to determine when access ends. The lifecycle can differ across a consumer app, the provider’s native API and a cloud partner’s service. A retirement in a consumer app does not necessarily mean the API has shut down, and a provider’s published dates may not govern a partner-operated deployment.

  • Native API: check the provider’s deprecations page for the exact model identifier, shutdown date and recommended replacement.
  • Cloud partner: check that partner’s lifecycle notice as well as the model provider’s information; partner schedules can differ.

Can you still access Claude Opus 3 after retirement?

Anthropic says Claude Opus 3 retired on January 5, 2026. After formal retirement, it remained available to paid claude.ai users, and API access was available by request. Anthropic described these arrangements as early and experimental, so Opus 3 is an example of limited post-retirement access—not a guarantee that the same option will be offered for other models. How to assess a model dependency before its retirement

  1. Identify the exact deployment. Record the model identifier and whether you access it through a consumer product, native API or cloud partner.
  2. Find the applicable lifecycle notice. Use the platform’s own documentation; look for the announced deprecation date, shutdown date and any named replacement.
  3. Separate preservation from availability. A promise to retain weights does not establish that you can keep sending requests to the model.
  4. Read the qualifications. Check whether a notice period is a minimum or normal practice, what exceptions apply, and whether continued post-retirement access is guaranteed, experimental or available only by request.
  5. Plan a migration around the actual shutdown. Test the replacement on your own tasks and move the dependency before the applicable endpoint becomes unavailable; do not assume a provider’s preservation commitment extends your service window.
