The chip is a Super I/O controller: it handles low-speed connections associated with older PC hardware, and some implementations also monitor temperatures, fan speeds, and voltages. Its functions and whether they appear on a particular motherboard vary by model; a COM header or PS/2 port on a newer board is evidence that a legacy-facing connection remains useful for some designs, not that every modern PC needs the same chip or ports.

What does a Super I/O controller do?

Super I/O is a collection of low-speed input/output functions traditionally associated with PC peripherals. Older ASUS motherboard manuals describe controllers handling serial ports, parallel ports, floppy drives, and PS/2 keyboard and mouse connections. The PU-DLS/PU-DL guide places the controller on the LPC interface and describes it as part of the “legacy I/O subsystem.”

These devices are not interchangeable lists of guaranteed features. The functions included depend on the controller and motherboard implementation. For example, ASUS’s older P4SGL-VM guide also lists standard infrared and a MIDI/game port, alongside floppy, parallel, and UART functions. That is a historical board’s feature list, not a promise about a current motherboard.

Why can an old-I/O chip still matter?

It can support legacy-facing connections

A board designed to connect to equipment using interfaces such as serial, parallel, floppy, or PS/2 needs hardware that provides the relevant functions. Some current boards still expose individual legacy-facing connections. ASUS lists a COM header on the Prime H610M-E-CSM, while its separate Prime H610M-R D4-CSM specification lists PS/2 connectivity. These examples show that such connections persist on selected models; they do not show how common they are across current motherboards.

Some implementations also help monitor the board

Super I/O is not limited to peripheral connections in every implementation. ASUS’s P5S800-VM user guide says its Winbond Super I/O-integrated ASIC monitors CPU temperature to help prevent overheating and damage. The same manual says system fan RPM is monitored for failure detection and voltage levels for supply stability. This is a model-specific example, not a claim that every Super I/O controller performs these monitoring tasks.

Does every modern motherboard use the same Super I/O chip?

No. The available documentation establishes that particular boards support particular functions; it does not establish a single design used by all contemporary motherboards. Features differ by model, and a board specification listing a COM header or PS/2 connection does not by itself identify the controller or prove that every board uses a discrete Super I/O chip in the same way.

  • Extended Heatsink Design: Extended PWM heatsink and enhanced circuit design ensures high-end processors to ran at full speed
  • 5G Network Solution: Featuring 5G LAN to deliver network experience
  • Audio Boost 5: Isolated audio with a high-quality audio processor for the most immersive gaming experience

The sources also do not establish one universal reason board designers retain a legacy-facing feature. The practical conclusion is narrower: when a motherboard includes one of these interfaces, its design supports that connection, and some controller implementations also provide monitoring functions.

Board documentation What it documents How to interpret it
ASUS PU-DLS/PU-DL user guide LPC Super I/O support for UART-compatible serial ports, a parallel port with EPP/ECP, floppy, and PS/2 keyboard and mouse. An older manual describing a broad set of legacy I/O functions.
ASUS P4SGL-VM user guide Floppy controller, multi-mode parallel port, two UARTs, standard infrared, and a MIDI/game port. Another historical implementation with a different function mix.
ASUS P5S800-VM user guide Temperature, system fan RPM, and voltage monitoring attributed to its Winbond Super I/O-integrated ASIC. A model-specific example of board monitoring alongside I/O functions.
ASUS Prime H610M-E-CSM specification A COM header. A current-model example of a legacy-facing connection; the specification does not establish a universal controller design.
ASUS Prime H610M-R D4-CSM specification PS/2 connectivity. A different current-model example; it should not be conflated with the H610M-E-CSM.

What this means when choosing or using a motherboard

  • Check the exact model’s specifications. Do not assume that a COM header, PS/2 port, floppy support, or monitoring feature on one board is present on another.
  • Distinguish an exposed connection from a controller claim. A specification may list a header or port without describing the underlying chip architecture.
  • Match the feature to your actual equipment. If you need a legacy connection, confirm that the board explicitly lists the interface you require; the general label “Super I/O” alone does not guarantee a specific port.
  • Treat monitoring as implementation-specific. Consult the board’s own manual for details about temperature, fan, or voltage monitoring.
