A mortgage insurance company’s stock price target is an analyst’s estimate of where the shares could trade at a stated future horizon, often 12 months. It is not a promise, a guaranteed return, or a company-set objective. To judge what it means, check who issued it, when, for which security, and on what assumptions—then treat any implied upside or downside as arithmetic, not as the probability that the shares will reach that price.
What a stock price target tells you—and what it does not
A target summarizes an analyst’s valuation view of a particular stock at a future point in time. Its meaning depends on the analyst’s assumptions about earnings, risk, capital use, and market conditions. The target label by itself does not show whether those assumptions are sound or likely to hold.
A target also needs context: the issuing analyst or firm, the publication date, the stated horizon, and any accompanying rating. A target without those details can be difficult to compare with another estimate or a current share quote.
How to interpret an implied return
To calculate the percentage move implied by a target, subtract the current share price from the target, then divide the difference by the current share price and multiply by 100. For example, if a hypothetical target is $12 and a contemporaneous quote is $10, the arithmetic implies 20% upside. That calculation says nothing about the chance of reaching $12.
#1 Best Overall
- Use a target and quote that are both current as of clearly stated dates and times.
- Confirm they refer to the same currency, public issuer, and share class.
- Check whether the target’s horizon is still ahead; an old target may no longer reflect current conditions.
MGIC Investment’s investor materials caution that market information may be delayed, so a quote from company materials should not be treated as live. A delayed or stale quote can distort an otherwise correct calculation. MGIC Investment investor materials
Why consensus targets can differ
A consensus is an aggregation of analysts’ targets, not a single forecast and not an industry-wide standard. Its value depends on which analysts and target dates are included, how stale estimates are handled, and how the provider calculates the result.
Rank #2
For example, PriceTargets.com says its consensus uses the most recent target from each analyst within the previous 12 months and averages those targets. The site notes that other providers may produce different results because their available data and methods differ. Check the analyst count, target range, and calculation window rather than treating a consensus figure as definitive. PriceTargets.com’s MGIC target page

Third-party consensus pages are mutable snapshots, not authoritative live records. The pages available for MGIC Investment (NYSE: MTG) showed differing target values and counts; those figures should not be read as current without a clearly dated refresh.

Why mortgage insurers need a business-specific check
A stock target applies to the shares of the public issuer. The insurer’s operating results and capital position are among the inputs an analyst may consider, but no single operating metric mechanically produces a target price.
MGIC Investment Corporation is the parent of Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC). MGIC says it “provides products and services that protect mortgage investors from credit losses.” Its business also helps make low-down-payment mortgages possible. MGIC Investment’s investor overview

When assessing a target for a mortgage insurer, review the business drivers behind its earnings and risk rather than relying only on a generic earnings multiple:

- Credit performance: Delinquencies, claims, and the loss ratio indicate how mortgage-credit risk is affecting results.
- Profitability: Earnings and return on equity help test the assumptions behind a valuation.
- Capital and risk transfer: Capital, liquidity, and reinsurance affect the company’s capacity to absorb losses and support its business.
- Eligibility requirements: The ability to keep meeting requirements for loans purchased by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac matters to the business.
MGIC’s Q2 2026 filing describes the financial and business requirements under PMIERs. It says available assets must equal or exceed minimum required assets for the company to remain eligible. The filing also identifies interest rates, home prices, housing demand, employment, inflation, and mortgage-credit availability as factors that can affect the business. These are factors to test against an analyst’s assumptions, not a formula for calculating the share price. MGIC Investment SEC filings

How to compare multiple targets or insurers
When targets disagree, compare the details that could explain the gap instead of simply choosing the higher number. For each estimate, note:
- Issue date and forecast horizon.
- Analyst or firm, target amount, and accompanying rating.
- Assumptions about earnings, valuation, housing and credit trends, and capital returns.
- Whether the estimate covers the public parent and the same security you are evaluating.
- How the consensus provider treats older targets and which analysts it includes.
When comparing two mortgage insurers, use consistent measures such as risk-adjusted returns, new insurance written, loss experience, capital headroom, reinsurance, valuation, and business mix. Business mix can make a simple comparison misleading: Radian’s June 2026 Investor Day describes its evolution into a multi-line specialty insurer, so its broader activities should be considered alongside those of a more concentrated mortgage insurer. How to use company results without mistaking them for a forecast
MGIC Investment reported $182.1 million in net income, or $0.86 per diluted share, for Q2 2026. It also reported adjusted net operating income of $183.7 million, or $0.87 per diluted share, for that quarter. These are historical results for a stated reporting period—not a current run rate or a forecast. MGIC Investment quarterly results
Results like these can help a reader assess whether an analyst’s earnings assumptions appear connected to the company’s reported performance. They do not establish what the stock should be worth, and one quarter alone cannot show how future housing or credit conditions will affect results.
