A tricopter carrying a metal detector mapped buried metallic test objects across uneven ground in two small outdoor experiments. The important limit: the researchers used nonexplosive gas cartridges, not landmines. Their work demonstrates a promising mapping prototype, not a proven mine-detection or clearance system.
What the tricopter demonstrated
The ETH Zurich team designed an autonomous aerial system to address a practical sensing problem: a metal detector works best when it is close to and parallel with the ground, but uneven terrain can tilt a conventional drone and its sensor. The team’s five-degree-of-freedom (5-DOF) aircraft could translate while independently adjusting its heading and pitch, helping it keep the detector aligned over changing ground. The prototype used a tricopter platform built by Voliro AG. The researchers’ paper describes the system and its experiments.
For terrain mapping, the aircraft used LiDAR. It combined GNSS, inertial measurement unit (IMU), and LiDAR data to estimate its position, then planned coverage paths that accounted for terrain alignment, visibility, maneuverability, and obstacles. The paper reports experiments involving GNSS loss beneath tree cover and LiDAR-inertial drift over featureless ground as tests of localization resilience.

What the field experiments found
The researchers buried gas cartridges as metallic targets and leveled them with the ground surface. The detector responses were integrated into a grid map. These were controlled metallic surrogates—not live mines, inert mines, or explosive remnants of war.

These results show that the prototype could map detector responses in the two tested areas. They do not establish a general detection rate: the experiments were small, involved one kind of metallic test object, and did not test mines or a range of mine designs and burial conditions.
How to interpret the map—and its limitations
A signal patch is not an exact object outline
The paper notes that mapped signal patches looked larger than the actual targets because each measurement represented the area beneath the detector head. A response map therefore indicates where the detector sensed a signal; it does not necessarily identify an object’s precise dimensions or confirm that a signal is a mine.

Calibration and repeatability remain concerns
The detector did not expose raw signals, and its manufacturer’s calibration was unspecified. The authors also observed its sensitivity increasing during the experiments. Those constraints make it harder to interpret signal strength and assess how directly the maps would transfer to another detector or repeated survey.

Simulation results are not mine-detection results
In simulation, the proposed planner reduced coverage time by 10.6% compared with the Aligned-6 approach, while its 95th-percentile alignment deviation remained below 7.5 degrees. Those figures describe simulated planning and alignment performance—not real-world mine detection, accuracy, or clearance.

Could drones help locate landmines?
Potentially, as a way to survey and map areas for further investigation. This prototype addresses a genuine challenge: keeping a close-range metal detector aligned with uneven ground while navigating obstacles. But a mapped anomaly is not a confirmed mine, and finding metallic objects is not the same as reliably detecting all mine types or making an area safe.
Other research explores different aerial sensing approaches. For example, a separate study used UAV imagery and machine learning to look for PFM-1 antipersonnel mines; its reported figures belong to that distinct method and study, not to the ETH tricopter. The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction article discusses that imagery-based work and describes unmanned aircraft systems and machine learning as an auxiliary first-look area-reduction technique. It should not be read as validation of this metal-detector system.

What would be needed before operational use
The experiments are a proof of concept for robotic mapping, not evidence that the system is ready for humanitarian demining. Establishing operational usefulness would require evidence beyond these tests, including performance across relevant mine types and terrain, reliable localization and sensor calibration, and validation under appropriate field and safety procedures. The paper does not establish those capabilities. IEEE Spectrum’s contemporaneous report likewise notes that further investigation is needed to determine the system’s usefulness in the field.
