A mattress sleep trial lets you use a mattress at home for a stated period and, if you meet the seller’s conditions, request a return or exchange. It gives you more time to judge comfort than a showroom visit. It does not automatically mean a free mattress, a fee-free refund, an unconditional return, eligibility for every product or buyer, or improved sleep or health.
What a mattress sleep trial actually is
A sleep trial is a seller’s post-purchase return policy for testing a mattress in your own bedroom. You normally pay for the mattress first, sleep on it for the policy’s stated window, and decide whether to keep it. If you follow the rules, the seller may arrange a return, exchange, donation, recycling pickup, or refund.
The trial exists because your body may need time to adjust to a different firmness, support pattern, temperature profile, or material. A few minutes in a showroom cannot reproduce several nights in your usual sleeping position. The policy is therefore an opportunity to evaluate the product, not a promise about the result of that evaluation.
What it does not guarantee
It is not automatically free
“Free trial” generally refers to the opportunity to try the mattress at home, not to receiving a free mattress. Sleep Foundation explains that buyers pay up front; a refund may be available only when the policy is followed. A seller may also deduct pickup, shipping, restocking, or other charges. One official policy example, for direct Tempur-Pedic purchases, lists a nonrefundable $175 plus tax return fee.

It is not an unconditional return right
Eligibility can depend on the mattress model, the original purchaser, the purchase channel, the delivery date, the buyer’s location, the mattress’s condition, and compliance with a minimum break-in period. A headline such as “100 nights” or “101 nights” does not override those conditions.
It does not promise better sleep or a medical benefit
The policy gives you time to assess comfort and support. The cited policy descriptions do not promise that you will sleep longer, experience less pain, or receive any other health outcome. If you are addressing a medical condition, treat a trial as a consumer-return option rather than a treatment guarantee.
It is separate from a warranty
A trial generally covers a change-of-mind decision: you decide the mattress is not right for you even though it is not defective. A warranty usually addresses specified defects in materials or workmanship and has different exclusions, evidence requirements, and remedies. A mattress can qualify for a trial return without having a defect, while a warranty claim is governed by the warranty document.

Read the written policy for the exact mattress and seller before ordering. These terms matter more than the large number in an advertisement.

When the clock starts
Confirm whether night one is the order date, shipment date, or delivery date. Tempur-Pedic’s direct policy says its 90-night period starts on delivery day. A policy that starts at delivery gives you a different usable window from one that starts when the order leaves a warehouse.
Minimum break-in period
Some sellers require you to keep the mattress for a minimum number of nights before requesting a return. Puffy’s official policy advertises 101 nights but requires at least 14 nights before a return can be started. Tempur-Pedic’s 90-night direct-purchase policy asks customers to try the mattress for at least 30 days. Count this requirement when comparing policies: the headline period is not necessarily the earliest day you can send the mattress back.
Who, what, and where qualifies
- Check whether the policy is limited to purchases made directly from the seller’s website or includes authorized retailers.
- Verify that the exact mattress model is covered; foundations, adjustable bases, bedding, comfort items, and accessories may have different rules.
- Confirm that the original purchaser must make the request and that the policy is available in your location.
- Look for household limits. Puffy’s cited policy allows no more than two returns per household and applies to original purchasers who buy genuine products directly from puffy.com.
Condition and cleanliness requirements
Some sellers can deny a trial return if the mattress is stained, soiled, torn, or otherwise damaged. Sleep Foundation recommends using a protector to reduce the risk of stains or damage. That is a practical precaution, not proof that every seller requires a protector. Check whether the policy specifies a washable mattress protector, a waterproof mattress protector, or another condition standard, and keep the mattress covered from the first night.
Return costs and refund timing
Ask who pays for pickup or shipping, whether the original delivery charge is refundable, and whether a restocking fee applies. Do not assume another seller uses the same fee structure as the Tempur-Pedic example. Also check whether the seller arranges pickup, asks you to donate or recycle the mattress, or requires packaging. Keep your order number, delivery record, and policy version until the refund is complete.

Exchange rules
An exchange may not restart the trial. Sleep Number’s official returns page says a product exchanged during its 100-night in-home trial becomes final sale and does not receive a new trial. A seller may offer an exchange as the only remedy, or may permit a return but limit the number of exchanges. Read this section before choosing a replacement firmness.
Authorization and processing
Some policies require advance authorization. Sleep Number’s page says prior return authorization is required and that refunds are generally processed within about 21 days. Do not ship a mattress on your own before receiving instructions; an unauthorized shipment can delay or jeopardize the refund.
How current official examples differ
The following United States policy examples were checked on October 13, 2026. They illustrate why the complete terms matter; they are not a ranking or recommendation, and seller policies can change.

Sleep Foundation’s July 15, 2025 overview describes 90 to 120 nights as a typical average range, while noting that some trials are as short as 30 nights and others last a year or more. That range is a general description, not a current market census and not a prediction for any particular seller.

How to compare two mattress trials
Use the same questions for every candidate. A longer headline window can be less useful than a shorter policy with no fee and a simple pickup process.
- Calculate the usable window. Identify the start event and subtract any mandatory break-in period.
- Check product and channel eligibility. Match the exact model, seller, retailer, purchaser, and location to the written terms.
- Price the exit. Record return, pickup, shipping, restocking, and nonrefundable delivery charges.
- Check condition rules. Note stain, damage, packaging, protector, and inspection requirements.
- Map the remedy. Determine whether you can return for a refund, exchange once, or only receive store credit.
- Read the exchange clause. Find out whether a replacement gets a fresh trial or becomes final sale.
- Confirm the logistics. Check authorization, pickup or donation instructions, and expected refund timing.
Write these answers down before buying. Saving a copy of the policy and your order confirmation helps if the web page changes during your trial.
A practical way to use the trial
Before the first night
- Record the delivery date, because it may start the clock.
- Install any required foundation or base exactly as specified.
- Use a clean protector if the policy permits or recommends one.
- Keep labels, receipts, and packaging instructions.
During the adjustment period
Follow the stated minimum nights rather than requesting a return after one uncomfortable night. Track sleep position, pressure at shoulders and hips, spinal support, heat, motion transfer, edge support, and whether discomfort is improving or worsening. Change only one variable at a time; adding a topper or changing the base can make it harder to judge the mattress itself. A trial is not a requirement to tolerate severe pain, numbness, or an allergic reaction—contact the seller promptly and seek medical advice where appropriate.
When you decide to return
- Recheck that you have reached the minimum use period and remain inside the final return date.
- Contact the seller through the channel named in the policy and request authorization.
- Describe the mattress condition accurately and ask for written pickup or donation instructions.
- Photograph the mattress and retain the authorization number, pickup confirmation, and tracking information.
- Monitor the refund against the stated processing period and escalate with your documentation if it does not arrive.
Common misunderstandings and failure points
“The number of nights is the refund deadline.”
Not necessarily. The period may start on delivery, and a request may need to be submitted before the last night. A minimum break-in period can also delay eligibility.

“A retailer purchase has the same policy as a direct purchase.”
Seller policies can be limited to direct website orders. A retailer may set its own return terms, so compare the policy attached to your actual receipt and order channel.
“An exchange gives me another full trial.”
Sleep Number’s cited terms specifically say an exchanged product is final sale and does not receive a new trial. Never assume a replacement resets the clock.
“A warranty covers discomfort.”
Warranties generally address listed defects, not a subjective firmness preference. Use the trial procedure for a non-defective mattress that does not suit you.

A protector can help prevent stains, but the seller still applies its own condition and inspection rules. It cannot waive a fee, extend the deadline, or create eligibility.
What federal guidance does—and does not—say
Federal guidance supports accurate disclosure of refund and guarantee terms, but it does not create a universal federal right to return every mattress bought online or in a store. The Federal Trade Commission’s Telemarketing Sales Rule guidance states: “The TSR prohibits sellers and telemarketers from misrepresenting any material aspect — one that likely would have an effect on a consumer’s purchasing decision — of the nature or terms of the seller’s refund, cancellation, exchange, or repurchase policies.” That statement concerns telemarketing disclosures and should not be read as a blanket mattress-return rule for every sales channel.
FTC warranty guidance likewise says: “The Guides advise that, regardless of the price of the product, advertising terms such as ‘satisfaction guaranteed’ or ‘money back guarantee’ should be used only if the advertiser is willing to provide full refunds to customers when, for any reason, they return the merchandise.” The same guidance emphasizes disclosing material conditions and limitations. Your practical protection remains the seller’s written policy, your order records, and any consumer laws that apply to your transaction and location.
Questions to answer before placing the order
- What event starts the trial clock?
- What is the earliest date I may request a return?
- What is the final date for submitting the request?
- Does this exact model and purchase channel qualify?
- Is the policy limited to the original purchaser?
- What fees are deducted, and is initial delivery refundable?
- What condition, stain, damage, and protector rules apply?
- Is authorization required before pickup or shipment?
- What happens if I exchange instead of return?
- How and when will the refund be issued?
Answering those questions turns a marketing headline into a realistic cost-and-risk calculation. A sleep trial is valuable when its conditions fit your purchase; it is not a guarantee that the mattress will suit you or that leaving it will be free.
