In hockey, “lower-body injury” names a broad region, not a specific diagnosis. By itself, the label does not reveal which tissue is injured, how serious the injury is, what treatment is needed, or when a player will return. A reported absence estimate is also not medical clearance to play.
What “lower-body injury” tells you—and what it doesn’t
It tells you only that the injury is in the lower body. It does not identify a particular bone, joint, ligament, muscle, or other structure, nor its severity or treatment. Don’t infer a diagnosis or timetable from the label alone.
Injury reporting systems distinguish among body locations and injury categories. For example, the IIHF injury-report form includes categories such as strain and fracture and locations such as lower back and ACL. It is a reporting instrument, not a clinical diagnostic manual.

The NHL/NHLPA collective bargaining agreement addresses public disclosure of medical information. Article 34 permits specified information for injuries sustained in a player’s NHL employment, including the injury’s nature, prognosis, anticipated recovery length, and treatment or procedures, subject to the agreement’s other medical-information provisions. That does not mean every club must publish a precise diagnosis or a firm return date. A short update may be all that has been reported publicly.

For example, NHL coverage reported Jake Evans out four to six weeks with a lower-body injury on December 27, 2025. A December 30, 2025 update said Connor Bedard had returned to skating but had no return timeline. Those were player-specific updates at the time, not forecasts for other players with similar-sounding labels.
How to read a recovery estimate
First identify what kind of milestone the report actually describes. “Out four to six weeks,” “will be reassessed,” “back skating,” “expected to be ready for training camp,” and “cleared to play” do not mean the same thing. An absence estimate describes expected time away; it does not establish readiness for full practice, competition, or a return to prior performance.

- Diagnosis and location: Is a specific injury or body structure named, or is the update limited to “lower-body injury”?
- Severity and associated injuries: Are these described, or not stated?
- Treatment: Does the report mention surgery, another procedure, or a non-surgical approach?
- Estimate and source: Who gave the timeline, and when was it reported?
- Milestone: Does the figure refer to expected time out, a reassessment, skating, practice, or competition?
- Readiness criteria: Has the player met the clinical and functional requirements for the next stage?
The available reporting here does not establish a single formula or reliable, comparable recovery ranges across hockey lower-body diagnoses. A useful estimate is therefore specific to the player and report; it should not be generalized to a different injury based on the broad label.

Why estimates can change
A timeline is an estimate made with the information available at that point. Diagnosis, treatment, recovery progress, and reassessment can all affect what the team later expects. Kevin Fiala’s case illustrates the distinction: NHL.com reported left lower-leg fractures in February, then reported in September 2026 that he had undergone a further procedure and that the Kings would determine a return timeline as he recovered. Those reports show how an individual player’s outlook can change; they do not establish a typical timetable for leg fractures.
Return to play is a decision, not just a date
For ACL injuries specifically, the 2020 Panther Symposium consensus describes return to sport as a progression from participation through return to sport and performance. Its decision-making framework considers biological healing, objective examination, functional testing, psychological readiness, sport context, and associated injuries. The group states that “Purely time-based RTS decision-making should be abandoned.” In other words, elapsed time alone does not establish that an athlete is ready.

- STICK HANDLING TRAINING: This NHL stick handling training ball set includes (4) on ice and off ice practice balls so players can develop their hands, improve their dekes, and sharpen overall stick handling skills.
- MICRO BALL: The 38mm, 45g micro AGS hockey ball is extra small to help players train hand eye coordination and fine tune stick control for maximum precision.
- OFFICIAL PUCK WEIGHT: The official puck weight ball helps players adjust to the feel and weight of a standard puck while still allowing smooth roll and movement for easy off ice training anywhere.
- WEIGHTED BALL: The weighted hockey ball is 2x the weight of a standard puck, perfect for building hand strength and improving stick quickness when transitioning back to regulation play.
- REFLEX BALL: Designed to be nearly transparent and difficult to track visually, the reflex ball trains players to rely on feel over sight, teaching them to control the puck by touch while keeping their head up and staying game aware.
This consensus is about ACL injury, not a validated return-to-play protocol for every lower-body diagnosis. It helps explain why a calendar estimate and clearance are separate, but it should not be applied as a universal checklist for all hockey injuries.
How to interpret a reported ACL timeline
NHL.com’s 2026 coverage of Tyler Seguin’s ACL surgery described a typical post-surgery recovery timeline averaging around nine months in his case context and discussed expected training-camp readiness. Treat that figure as NHL.com’s reported estimate, not a universal ACL rule, a hockey medical standard, or a guarantee for another player.
