A defenseman’s absence takes that player’s games and fantasy production out of your active lineup, but it does not automatically transfer his role to the next player on the depth chart. Check who is expected to dress, whether his pair or power-play assignment changes, and how the replacement fits your league’s scoring before making a roster move.

What changes when a defenseman is out?

You lose the absent player’s contribution for the games he misses. A teammate may gain an opportunity, but a player who simply enters the lineup is not necessarily taking over the absent defenseman’s minutes, offensive deployment, or fantasy output.

NHL.com’s fantasy glossary advises managers to look for players who can move up the depth chart and take on similar usage and production. That replacement might be on the same NHL team or available on your fantasy waiver wire. Read NHL.com’s fantasy glossary.

How to choose a replacement

  1. Confirm the player’s status. Check whether he is ruled out, day-to-day, or a game-time decision. Recheck close to puck drop; projected lineups and injury statuses are snapshots, not guarantees.
  2. Check your league’s roster rules. Confirm whether your fantasy platform and league settings allow an injury-slot move, which designations qualify, and whether transaction limits or waiver timing affect your options. IR and IR+ eligibility varies; NHL.com’s glossary includes Yahoo-specific examples that should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
  3. Look beyond who enters the lineup. Check the replacement’s projected defensive pair and whether power-play work is changing. NHL.com’s projected lineups can help with current pairings and status, but reports may change.
  4. Match the player to your scoring. For a points league, use your league’s actual point values. For a category league, target the categories you need rather than treating every defenseman as interchangeable.
  5. Compare the same-team option with waiver alternatives. Consider expected role, availability, and how many games each player can contribute in your matchup window. Check the schedule and player availability for those specific dates.
  6. Weigh the roster cost. If the return timeline is unclear and the player is valuable, consider whether an eligible injury slot preserves him without costing you a useful roster spot. If no slot is available, compare expected missed games with the best available replacement and your league’s transaction rules.

Which skills and categories matter?

The right replacement depends on your league format. NHL.com’s 2026-27 defenseman rankings identify goals, assists, power-play points, shots on goal, hits, and blocked shots among the relevant categories, and factor in defensive pairings and power-play usage when valuing defensemen. See NHL.com’s 2026-27 defenseman rankings.

  • In a points league: Compare expected production using your league’s scoring settings. NHL Fantasy Stars, for example, assigns 7 points for a goal, 4 for an assist, and 1 each for a shot on goal, hit, and blocked shot. Those are values for that game, not universal fantasy scoring.
  • In a category league: Identify whether you need scoring, power-play points, shots, hits, or blocks, then favor a replacement whose likely contributions fit those categories.
  • In either format: Treat projected pair and power-play usage as clues to opportunity, not guarantees of production.

What a projected lineup can—and cannot—tell you

A lineup report can show a possible chain reaction: an absence may bring one defenseman into the lineup and move another into a different role. For example, NHL.com’s October 3, 2026 report said Jacob Trouba was a game-time decision because of illness and that Sam Dickinson would enter the lineup if Trouba could not play. That dated projection illustrates how to read a status report; it does not predict fantasy production or establish a recommendation for a particular league. Check NHL.com’s projected lineups.

Use the report to verify who may play and where he may be deployed, then check again near game time. An announced absence, a changed pair, or a possible power-play assignment can all affect your choice, but none by itself proves that a replacement will match the absent player’s fantasy value.

What is—and is not—known about the fantasy impact

The cited NHL.com materials provide practical evaluation factors, scoring categories, and lineup information; they do not quantify a general fantasy impact for a defenseman’s absence. Without a specific player, return outlook, league format, and available replacement pool, there is no basis for naming a universal substitute or estimating how much production you will lose.
