A conversation ID can help an application find or continue conversation history. It does not, by itself, contain your repository, project instructions, or the files an AI coding agent needs for its current task. The application must retrieve the appropriate history and supply current project context separately.
What is a conversation ID?
A conversation ID is an identifier used by a particular application or framework to refer to a conversation or related state. It is a handle, not the conversation data itself and not a universal package of everything an agent might need.
In the OpenAI Agents SDK, a session stores conversation history for a specific session and makes that history available to later runs. The session ID selects that history; the history is stored through the session mechanism. The SDK documents in-memory, SQLite, Redis-backed, and OpenAI-hosted session options, whose details can vary by SDK version. OpenAI Agents SDK session documentation
“Conversation ID” is not a universal technical contract. Microsoft Agent Framework documents service-issued identifiers that can accompany service-managed history, while its AgentSession can hold local or session state that can be serialized and restored. What an identifier retrieves therefore depends on the framework and application using it. Microsoft Agent Framework session documentation

Does a conversation ID contain project context?
No—not inherently. A repository, its current files, project-specific rules, and task inputs are not established by an ID alone. The cited session documentation describes history and session state, not a universal project-context bundle.
For example, a coding agent might use an identifier to resume discussion about a bug, but still need the application to load the current repository instructions and relevant files before proposing a fix. If the code has changed since the earlier exchange, old conversation history is not a substitute for reading the current files. This is an application-design distinction, not a guarantee about any particular provider.

How can an agent remember previous messages?
The application needs a continuity mechanism that can retrieve or restore the relevant state. Commonly, that means either storing history in a session mechanism or continuing through state managed by a service. The storage and restoration model determines what is available; the identifier alone does not.
- Session-managed history: The OpenAI Agents SDK session mechanism retains conversation history for subsequent runs. Its documentation says this mechanism cannot be combined in the same run with run-level continuation options such as
conversation_idorprevious_response_id. Choose the approach that fits the application’s persistence and continuity requirements. These approaches answer how conversation continuity is handled. The application still needs to decide which project files and instructions to provide for each task.

Is a conversation ID an authorization token?
No. An identifier is not proof that the person presenting it is allowed to retrieve the associated history. The OpenAI Agents SDK explicitly states: “A session ID selects conversation history; the session ID does not authenticate a user or authorize access to that history.” OpenAI Agents SDK session documentation
Microsoft warns that hosted, multi-user applications reusing a backing key or project must not treat service session IDs or related continuation identifiers as end-user authorization boundaries. Microsoft Agent Framework session documentation

Protect history in a hosted application
- Keep service-side conversation identifiers in trusted application storage rather than relying on a client-provided ID as authority.
- When a request asks to resume a conversation, authenticate the user and check that the server-side record belongs to that user or their authorized tenant.
- Only then retrieve the associated history or state and provide it to the agent.
A hard-to-guess or opaque ID is still an identifier, not an access-control check. Enforce ownership in the application before retrieving conversation data.
Why do conversation IDs behave differently across products?
Each framework defines its own relationship between identifiers, stored history, and session state. For a specific example, Microsoft Teams documentation describes a session as an independent conversation context in a one-to-one chat; in its documented sessions-enabled setup, the conversation ID is the default session ID. Before relying on an identifier, check the documentation for the product and version in use: what it selects, where the associated state lives, how that state is restored, and what access checks protect it. A service-side history mechanism and a local serialized session are not interchangeable merely because both involve an ID.
