A chief robotics officer (CRO) is a senior leader responsible for an organization’s robotics strategy and its execution. The title has no single standardized job description: one CRO may coordinate robotics adoption across a company, while another leads engineering teams building and deploying a specific robot product.
What does a chief robotics officer do?
The role connects organizational priorities with robotics work. Depending on the employer, that can mean setting direction for robotics adoption, leading technical development, or overseeing work from research through production and project validation. A 2019 industry article framed the role around bringing robots into plant operations and managing how robotic systems interact with human coworkers, but that is one framing rather than a universal definition. How the responsibilities differ
Company profiles and a job posting show how widely the remit can vary. These examples illustrate actual uses of the title; they do not establish a standard CRO job description.
Engineering across the product lifecycle
At Hibot, CRO Paulo Debenest leads the engineering department across development, R&D, and production. The company says he oversees technical teams and works with project managers on priorities, resource allocation, project validation, and improvements to standards. Hibot company profile

Hands-on leadership at a startup
A February 2021 FLX Solutions posting sought a founding CRO to lead software and embedded systems for a robot product. The work included robotics algorithms, integration, testing, and validation. The posting listed ROS, programming, SLAM, perception, and sensor fusion among desired technical areas. Those requirements describe that specific opening, not a qualification checklist for every CRO. Company-level adoption and human-robot work
In some organizations, the position is oriented more toward adopting robotics in operations and coordinating the relationship between robotic systems and human workers. The available examples do not show that every CRO owns workforce policy, safety or compliance, a robotics budget, or company-wide automation.

How to understand a CRO job description
Rather than infer the role from the title, check the job’s scope and authority. Four useful questions are:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Where does the role sit? Look for its reporting level and decision-making authority.
- What is the scope? Determine whether the CRO leads one product or coordinates robotics adoption across the enterprise.
- Which stages are included? Check whether responsibility covers research, engineering, production, integration, deployment, and validation, or only some of them.
- How does the role relate to human operators? See whether the description addresses how people and robotic systems work together.
These are comparison questions derived from the different remits in the examples, not a formal industry standard.

How common is the chief robotics officer title?
The examples establish that organizations have used the title: Hibot and Lila Sciences identify CROs in company profiles, and FLX Solutions advertised a CRO opening. They do not establish how prevalent the role is today. The available sources do not provide a current, representative count of organizations employing a CRO.
Older adoption figures should be treated as forecasts, not measured outcomes. A 2016 RoboBusiness press release predicted that 80% of multi-billion-dollar companies would have a CRO by 2030; a 2017 Myria Research forecast predicted a CRO function at more than 60% of businesses with over $1 billion in revenue and 75% of robotics-intensive vertical-sector companies by 2025. The sources cited for those predictions do not verify whether they came true. RoboBusiness press release Myria Research forecast

Is a CRO the same as a robotics engineer?
Not necessarily. The title denotes a senior leadership role, but how technically hands-on it is depends on the employer. The FLX Solutions posting combined executive leadership with software and embedded-systems work, while Hibot’s description emphasized leading an engineering department across several functions. A job title alone does not reveal whether the CRO personally develops systems or primarily directs teams and priorities.
