A 3% one-time fee can look like about 27% when annualized over a 40-day term—but that arithmetic is not automatically the loan’s formal APR. The result depends on the loan term, the amount used as the denominator, when the fee is charged, and the timing of repayments. A vanilla JavaScript calculator can illustrate the simple annualization; to calculate a transaction-specific APR, it must account for the actual cash flows.

How a 3% fee can become about 27% in a year-based comparison

For a simple annualized fee comparison, use:

Annualized fee rate = fee ÷ principal base × 365 ÷ loan term in days

Using a 3% fee and a 40-day term gives 3% × 365 ÷ 40 = 27.375%, or about 27.4%. This calculation assumes the fee is 3% of the chosen principal base and scales the one-time charge linearly to a 365-day year. It does not account for compounding or independently establish the APR that must be disclosed for a particular credit product.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes APR as comparing interest and fees with the amount borrowed and the number of days of the loan, then scaling the result to a year. Its example is a $15 charge per $100 borrowed for two weeks, which it says equates to an APR of almost 400%. That example illustrates why a short-term charge can look much larger when expressed annually. CFPB: payday-loan APR

What a fee calculator needs to show

A calculator is only as clear as its assumptions. For the simple annualization above, identify these inputs and labels:

  • Fee percentage: the one-time charge being compared.
  • Term in days: the number of days used in the annualization.
  • Principal base: whether the percentage is applied to the face amount of the loan or the amount the borrower actually receives.
  • Output label: call the result a “simple annualized fee rate” unless the tool calculates APR under the rules applicable to the specific credit product.

For example, if the fee is withheld from the advance, the borrower receives less than the stated face amount. A calculation based on net proceeds can therefore produce a different result from one that divides the fee by the face amount. The tool should make its denominator explicit rather than presenting an unlabeled percentage as definitive.

Why simple annualization is not always formal APR

APR is not merely the stated interest rate with a fee percentage added. CFPB consumer guidance explains that APR includes interest and additional lender fees, such as origination charges. For a formal APR determination, the amounts and timing of credit received and payments made matter. CFPB: loan interest rate and APR and Regulation Z § 1026.22

That distinction matters when fees are paid upfront or deducted from the proceeds, or when repayments occur on a schedule rather than as one payment at the end of the term. A fee-times-365-divided-by-days formula can show how a charge scales over time, but it does not by itself capture those cash flows. Rules also depend on the type of credit; Regulation Z has separate provisions for open-end credit and transaction charges. Regulation Z § 1026.14

For mortgages, the CFPB’s Closing Disclosure describes APR as “Your costs over the loan term expressed as a rate. This is not your interest rate.” That wording is specific to the mortgage disclosure and should not be treated as the required wording for every type of loan. Regulation Z § 1026.38

How to compare real loan offers

Use the disclosed APR when comparing offers, and look beyond a single percentage to understand what you will receive and repay. CFPB guidance recommends comparing APRs and says payday lenders must disclose APR and costs before an agreement; requirements vary by product and applicable law. CFPB: payday-loan APR

  • Compare disclosed APR with disclosed APR, rather than comparing a formal APR on one offer with a simplified annualized fee on another.
  • Check the total dollars repaid and all fees, not only the nominal interest rate.
  • Confirm the amount you will actually receive after any fees withheld from the advance.
  • Check when payments are due and whether the repayment schedule affects the cost.
  • Read the loan documents to confirm which charges are included in the disclosed figures.

As a point of reference, CFPB says that borrowing $100 for one year at a 30% APR costs about $1.25 for two weeks. That illustration is not a quote for a specific loan; it helps show why comparing costs over the actual borrowing period matters alongside the annual rate. CFPB: payday-loan APR
