A Roman marble torso depicts the sun god Sol driving a four-horse chariot across the sea, with Victory figures and the spoils of defeated enemies below. The imagery evokes the dawn of a new day—and, in the interpretation of Sotheby’s antiquities specialist Alexandra Olsman, presents Roman military success as a source of imperial power and legitimacy.
What the Roman marble torso shows
This is a fragment, not a complete statue: the head and limbs are missing, while the surviving torso displays an emperor’s cuirass, or decorative breastplate. Popular Science dates it to the Julio-Claudian era, from 27 BCE to 68 CE, and identifies the stone as Parian marble from the Greek island of Paros.
Popular Science reports that the sculpture originally stood in a temple at Salona, in present-day Croatia. That reported ancient setting does not establish where or when the fragment was discovered.

At the center of the breastplate, Sol, the Roman sun god, rides a quadriga—a chariot drawn by four horses—over the sea. Popular Science describes the scene as announcing the dawn of a new day. In the larger design, the rising sun can be read alongside the sculpture’s military imagery as a statement of renewal and authority.

Below Sol, two figures of Victory flank a tropaeum: a display of captured arms and equipment associated with defeated enemies. The composition thus places the promise of a new day above a visual record of victory.
Popular Science also reports ram and feline faces on the cuirass’s overlapping leather straps, symbols associated with strength and protection against evil. Together, these details turn the breastplate into more than decoration: they connect divine imagery, protection and triumph.

How Sotheby’s interprets the imagery
Sotheby’s presents the torso as a symbol of imperial power from the Roman Empire’s earliest years. Its antiquities specialist Alexandra Olsman interprets the imagery as a way of communicating power and legitimizing a new imperial structure. That is a specialist’s reading of the design, not proof that every ancient viewer understood it in exactly the same way.
