127.0.0.1 is the IPv4 loopback address: it lets a computer send IP traffic to itself. The reserved loopback range is broader—127.0.0.0/8—but 127.0.0.1 is the address most commonly used. A successful loopback test shows that local IP communication works; it does not prove that your network connection or the public internet is reachable.
What does 127.0.0.1 mean?
When a program connects to 127.0.0.1, it is addressing the same computer on which it is running, rather than another device on the local network or a server on the internet. This is called loopback: the traffic stays within the host for programs on that computer to communicate using IP.
IANA describes the address range as a way for a computer to identify itself to itself. RFC 3330 likewise says a datagram sent to an address in the block should loop back inside the host. [IANA; RFC 3330]
Why is the whole 127.0.0.0/8 range reserved?
The slash notation /8 identifies a block of IPv4 addresses, not a single address. IANA’s IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Space registry lists 127.0.0.0/8 as Loopback and references RFC 1122 section 3.2.1.3. The registry was last updated on October 9, 2025. The allocation date shown in the registry is September 1981; that is the block’s recorded allocation date, not the release date of a particular software implementation. [IANA IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Space; RFC 6890]
#1 Best Overall
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Although the block includes many addresses, RFC 3330 notes that typical implementations use 127.0.0.1/32, and IANA says other addresses in the range are seldom used. The entire block is reserved for loopback; that does not mean every address within it is routinely assigned to an application.
Is 127.0.0.1 my IP address?
It is an IP address your computer can use to refer to itself, but it is not the address that identifies your computer to other devices across the internet. IANA’s registry marks the loopback range as not forwardable and not globally reachable. It also marks it as neither a valid source nor destination for ordinary network traffic. That makes 127.0.0.1 different from a private-use address such as one in 192.168.0.0/16. A private-use address can identify a device within a local network; loopback refers back to the current host. RFC 6761 treats localhost as a special-use name associated with loopback, but details of name resolution can depend on the operating system and its configuration. [RFC 6761]
What does a successful loopback test prove?
A successful connection to 127.0.0.1 is evidence that the host can communicate with itself over IP, and may confirm that a local service is responding at that address and port. Because loopback traffic does not need to travel to another device, the result alone does not establish that your network interface, router, internet provider, or a remote website is reachable. This distinction follows from the address’s host-local purpose and its registry restrictions.

Use a loopback check to investigate local IP communication. To check a connection beyond the computer, test the relevant next step separately—for example, a service on another device or a remote destination. A local success and an external failure point to different parts of the connection path, so one test cannot substitute for the other.
What does “localhost” mean?
localhost is a special-use name associated with loopback, commonly used in place of the numeric address. RFC 6761 defines special handling for localhost names. The exact resolver behavior and configuration should not be assumed to be identical on every operating system. [RFC 6761]

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
In practical use, an application or browser pointed at localhost is intended to reach a service on the same computer—not a public server. If the expected local service does not respond, the loopback address by itself does not reveal whether the service is running or configured to accept the connection.

Can 127.0.0.1 be accessed from the internet?
It is not intended to be reachable as a public internet destination. The IANA registry marks the full 127.0.0.0/8 range as not globally reachable and not forwardable. Loopback traffic is meant to remain on the host, rather than be routed between computers. [IANA IPv4 Special-Purpose Address Space]

RFC 6890 notes that special-purpose address registry entries can have protocol exceptions, so the registry should not be read as a claim that no protocol could ever define an exception. For ordinary networking, however, 127.0.0.1 means “this host,” not “a server somewhere on the internet.” [RFC 6890]
