The “1.2 million” figure refers to passengers, according to Public Safety Canada committee notes. A separate 2026 letter from Canada’s privacy commissioner describes a broader impact of approximately 5,164,000 Canadian WestJet employees and customers. The figures cover different populations; they are not two estimates of the same group. If you may have been affected, contact WestJet using its incident-specific details below.
Why reports cite 1.2 million and 5.164 million

The passenger-specific figure is the one behind the headline. The larger figure includes employees as well as customers, so it should not be described as a passenger count. The sources do not establish that the figures conflict or that one should be added to the other.
What happened in the WestJet breach
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) says the breach occurred on or around June 12, 2025. In the incident account WestJet provided to the OPC, an unauthorized third party used social engineering to gain access to an employee account with administrative privileges. The actor impersonated the employee using the employee’s personal information, bypassed multi-factor authentication, moved through WestJet’s systems, deployed ransomware, and accessed and exfiltrated data from WestJet cloud storage.
WestJet discovered the incident on June 12 and issued a public advisory on June 13, 2025. It reported the breach to the OPC on June 14, according to the OPC’s compliance letter.

What information may have been exposed
The information varied from person to person, depending on their interactions with WestJet. The OPC’s letter says it could have included:
- Name and date of birth
- Email address, mailing address, and phone number
- Gender
- Information about recent bookings
- Travel-document details, such as passport information or other government-issued identifiers
WestJet confirmed to the OPC that credit and debit card numbers, expiry dates, CVVs, guest passwords, and Social Insurance Numbers were not obtained through the breach. That does not mean other exposed information carried no risk: contact, identity, booking, or travel-document details can still be sensitive. The sources do not establish that every affected person had every listed field exposed.

How to check whether your information was affected
- Check for a direct notice from WestJet. WestJet began notifying affected employees on July 23, 2025, and other affected individuals on August 7, 2025. Its incident notice explains which kinds of information may have been involved for that recipient and whether identity-theft protection services are available.
- Contact WestJet if you were not notified and want to check. People in Canada or the United States can call 1-888-937-8538 or email wjresponseteam@westjet.com, stating their country of residence in the email subject line. People outside those countries can use WestJet’s international phone-number directory or the same email address. Use WestJet’s official channels rather than replying to an unsolicited message claiming to verify your information.
- Follow the advice in your notice. WestJet says affected people may be offered identity-theft protection services where appropriate and available. Check your notice for eligibility and instructions before considering any outside service.
What WestJet recommends watching for
WestJet’s incident page says containment is complete and that additional system and data security measures have been implemented. It recommends that people:

- Check upcoming flight details.
- Be alert to suspicious emails, texts, or calls asking for credentials or personal information.
- Review bank statements for unfamiliar activity and credit files for unrecognized accounts or inquiries.
- Avoid sharing personal details by phone unless they know who is calling.
WestJet also says it has no indication that Rewards points or the points system were at risk, and that Rewards passwords were not affected. It says members can continue to use Rewards normally. These are WestJet’s statements on its incident page.

Is the privacy commissioner’s investigation finished?
No public final finding is established by the compliance letter. On August 5, 2025, Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne announced an investigation into WestJet’s security safeguards and the adequacy of its notifications under PIPEDA, Canada’s federal private-sector privacy law. The OPC announcement described those initial areas of examination.
In its 2026 compliance letter, the OPC says WestJet agreed to provide information about security enhancements, an assessment of safeguards, any remaining gaps, proposed solutions and timelines, and progress on recommendations. The Commissioner may discontinue the investigation if satisfied that the commitments have been fulfilled, but may continue or expand it if they are not fulfilled or new concerns arise. The letter is not an admission of liability or a finding that WestJet contravened PIPEDA; it also does not establish that all commitments have since been completed.
