On May 16, 2024, Western Digital announced 6TB versions of three external portable hard-drive families: WD My Passport, WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive and SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD. Western Digital called them the world’s highest-capacity 2.5-inch portable HDDs at that time. The announcement concerned complete, bus-powered external drives—not a separately sold bare 6TB laptop hard drive.
What Western Digital announced
The launch covered three product families and several variants of the My Passport line. Western Digital’s “world’s first 2.5-inch 6TB portable hard drive” wording described the capacity achievement across these portable external products, rather than one universal internal-drive model.
| Family | Primary use | 6TB launch detail |
|---|---|---|
| WD My Passport | General backup and portable file storage | 6TB My Passport, My Passport for Mac and related variants |
| WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive | Console and PC game-library storage | 6TB model; Western Digital estimated capacity for up to 150 games |
| SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD | Photo, video and field storage | 6TB rugged-positioned model with stated impact, crush and IP54 testing |
My Passport and P10 were announced as available through select retailers, e-tailers and the WD Store. Western Digital said the 6TB ArmorATD was expected by the end of May 2024.

WD_BLACK P10 for a larger game library
The 6TB P10 is aimed at storing console and PC games. Western Digital’s “up to 150 games” figure is an estimate based on an average game size of 36GB. Actual capacity depends on individual game sizes, formatting, system files, downloadable content and reserved space, so 150 is not a guaranteed count.

- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive — simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable.Specific uses: Business, personal
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.0
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services
Storage compatibility is platform-specific. A drive can hold game installers, captures or a library, but whether games can run directly from it, and which titles support that behavior, depends on the console or PC and the game. Check the platform maker’s requirements before treating the P10 as an expansion drive for a particular system.
G-DRIVE ArmorATD for travel and field media
ArmorATD is the choice when enclosure protection matters for moving photo or video files between locations. Western Digital reported internal testing for shock, crush resistance and IP54 splash-and-dust protection. For the 6TB model, the stated impact testing was up to 1 metre; the 1TB and 2TB versions were tested up to 1.2 metres. The release also stated crush resistance up to 1,000lb and IEC 60529 IP54 testing.

Those are qualified manufacturer test claims, not a promise that the drive is waterproof or indestructible. The unit should be clean and dry before use, and the test conditions do not cover every drop, liquid exposure or transport situation.
What “6TB” means in practice
6TB is decimal marketed capacity: one terabyte equals one trillion bytes. After formatting and when measured by an operating system that reports binary units, the available space will appear lower. The usable amount also depends on the host environment and the drive’s file system.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Portable HDDs generally trade lower cost per gigabyte and high capacity for slower access than portable SSDs. Western Digital’s overview cites read speeds up to 140MB/s only for select models; that is a vendor specification, not an independent comparison of all three 6TB families. These bus-powered drives use a USB connection and normally do not need a separate power brick.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this a bare internal 6TB laptop hard drive?
No. The May 2024 announcement was for finished external portable products with enclosures, USB electronics and model-specific software and warranties. The cited product information does not document a separately sold bare 6TB internal 2.5-inch drive for laptop installation. Do not assume that an external unit can be opened and installed internally without voiding the warranty or encountering connector, firmware and mounting differences.
Does WD offer any other 6TB portable HDD?
WD’s later Elements Portable documentation lists capacities up to 6TB, USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 with USB 2.0 compatibility and Windows 10 or later support. It says other operating systems may require reformatting and lists a two-year worldwide warranty, or three years in China. Elements was not one of the three product families named in the May 16, 2024 announcement.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow to choose among the announced models
- Choose My Passport for ordinary backups, documents and portable media.
- Choose P10 when the main requirement is a large console or PC game library, after checking the target platform’s external-storage rules.
- Choose ArmorATD when a more protective enclosure and field-media workflow justify its higher launch price.
- Compare the connection first: verify the host port, cable or adapter and required file-system format.
- Check the warranty and software in your market: model, region and retailer terms can differ.
- Prefer an SSD when faster loading, quieter operation or stronger resistance to vibration matters more than maximum capacity per dollar.
The Bottom Line
Western Digital’s May 16, 2024 announcement introduced 6TB external 2.5-inch HDDs in My Passport, WD_BLACK P10 and G-DRIVE ArmorATD families. The right model depends on whether you need general backup, game storage or a more rugged field enclosure; the announcement does not establish a bare internal 6TB laptop drive.
