Western Digital says it has allocated nearly all of its hard-drive production for calendar 2026, with long-term agreements already covering some business in 2027 and 2028. That is a statement about WD’s production commitments—not proof that hard drives have disappeared from consumer stores.
What Western Digital said about 2026, 2027 and 2028
On its January 30, 2026, Q2 FY2026 earnings call, CEO Irving Tan said, “As we highlighted, we’re pretty much sold out for calendar ’26.” He also said WD had established long-term agreements (LTAs) with two of its top customers for calendar 2027 and one for calendar 2028. Read the Q2 FY2026 earnings-call transcript.
“Pretty much” is an important qualification. Tan was describing WD’s production allocation, not saying every drive made by every manufacturer—or every drive in retail inventory—was unavailable. The customer counts for 2027 and 2028 likewise indicate how many top customers had agreements; they do not state what share of WD’s output those agreements cover.

What changed in WD’s September update
On September 9, 2026, WD gave a later snapshot of its forward commitments. Management said the “vast majority of calendar or fiscal year ’27 is under LTA.” The wording is deliberately broader than a precise calendar-year allocation: it does not establish that all of calendar 2027 output is contracted. WD also said some business was still being quoted and priced over three-, six-, or nine-month periods. Read the September 9 call transcript.

The later update adds detail, but it does not turn the January customer counts into supply percentages. It distinguishes longer-term agreements from shorter-term quoted business, without quantifying the output covered by either.
Why customers commit so far ahead
WD said it takes 52 weeks to produce a hard disk drive and that most—not all—customers are asked to place orders at least 52 weeks in advance. A year-long production lead time helps explain why the company seeks early demand visibility and why customers may arrange supply well before the delivery period.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
WD’s FY2026 annual report separately says that rising demand for higher-capacity drives brings greater manufacturing complexity and longer lead times. Those statements support a connection between planning horizons and production complexity; they do not identify the cause of each agreement or establish that AI demand alone drove the bookings. No such conclusion follows from WD’s announcement. The company was talking about its own production commitments. The available statements do not establish that retail inventory is exhausted, whether stores can replenish particular models, or how consumer prices have changed. Those questions require current retailer and market data, which these company updates do not provide.

A person shopping for a drive should check live stock and compare the specific product’s capacity, price per terabyte, warranty, interface, form factor, and suitability for the intended use—such as backup or a NAS. WD’s production-allocation statements are not a substitute for checking a retailer’s current listing.

WD’s Innovation Day presentation describes HDDs as part of capacity-oriented storage tiers and presents an SSD-plus-HDD storage platform. It also lays out ePMR and HAMR capacity-roadmap targets, including 40TB, 44TB, 60TB, and 100TB at different points in the roadmap.
