In June 2016, reports said a large collection of VK account data was being offered for sale. The often-repeated “100 million” headline is approximate: Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) currently lists 93.3 million affected addresses, while a contemporary report relayed by the Council of Europe cited a claim of 171 million accounts. The available sources do not reconcile those figures, so neither should be treated as a verified total.
What happened to VK account data?
HIBP dates the incident to January 2012, describes it as occurring approximately in 2012, and says the data emerged for sale in June 2016. HIBP added the incident to its database on June 9, 2016. Its listing names, phone numbers, email addresses and plain-text passwords among the exposed data. HIBP’s VK incident listing reports 93.3 million affected addresses.
A Council of Europe Cybercrime Programme Office digest covering June 1–15, 2016 relayed a June 5 report claiming 171 million VK accounts. That report said the dataset included full names, email addresses, plaintext passwords and, in many cases, locations and phone numbers. It said the theft was thought to have occurred in late 2012 or early 2013, though the seller could not be more precise. The digest cautions that its selected reports do not represent official Council positions; the figure is a contemporary reported claim, not a verified independent finding. The figures count different things and come from different sources and contexts. HIBP’s current incident overview lists affected addresses; the Council of Europe digest relayed a contemporaneous report claiming a number of accounts. The cited sources do not explain how those estimates were derived or reconcile them. They should not be averaged or presented as interchangeable measures.

Was VK hacked?
VK disputed the characterization that its database had been hacked. On June 6, 2016, RBC reported that VK press secretary Yevgeny Krasnikov described the data as an older collection of logins and passwords gathered by fraudsters in 2011–2012. RBC also reported VK’s statement that it had forcibly changed login credentials for users mentioned in the dataset.
Krasnikov told RBC: «Взлома базы данных „ВКонтакте“ не было, речь идет о старой базе логинов и паролей, которую мошенники собирали в период с 2011 по 2012 год» (“There was no hack of VK’s database; this concerns an old database of logins and passwords that fraudsters collected during 2011–2012.”). This is VK’s stated position at the time, not an independent forensic finding. The cited accounts do not establish the original technical vector or resolve whether the data came from a direct database intrusion. RBC’s report on VK’s response.

What should you do if you reused your VK password?
- Change it anywhere it was reused. Create a different password for each affected account, starting with email, financial services and other accounts that can reset or access others.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Turn it on for every service that supports it, especially accounts protected by the reused password.
- Use a password manager for new credentials. HIBP recommends a manager to generate and store strong, unique passwords, which reduces the risk that one exposed password can unlock multiple accounts.
