One retailer-listed example is the Sharper Image Weighted Heated Throw. Before considering any heated blanket, compare its specifications and check its exact brand and model against current safety notices.
What a weighted heated blanket combines
A weighted heated throw pairs a heavier fill—such as glass beads—with an electric heating element and controller. The added weight and optional warmth are separate features; neither establishes that the blanket will treat anxiety, insomnia, or another health condition.
What to compare before buying
- Weight and fill: Check the product’s stated total weight and the material used to distribute it.
- Size and intended use: Distinguish a throw from a full bed blanket, and check whether its dimensions suit the way you plan to use it.
- Heat range and controls: Look for the stated temperature range, number of settings, and whether the controller can be detached.
- Care instructions: Confirm whether the blanket can be machine-washed or only spot-cleaned.
- Safety status: Search the exact brand and model number on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall and warning pages before use.
A retailer-listed example: Sharper Image Weighted Heated Throw
Sharper Image lists its Weighted Heated Throw, item #207467, at 50 × 60 inches, with 13 pounds of evenly distributed glass beads and an overall product weight of 13.3 pounds. The retailer states that it has five settings—warm, low, medium, high, and off—a temperature range of 90°F to 105°F, a detachable controller, AC power, spot-clean-only care, and UL Listed status. These are seller-provided specifications, not independent test results; they should not be generalized to other weighted heated blankets. See the retailer’s product listing.
The listing also promotes the throw for calm, stress relief, anxiety reduction, and improved sleep. Those are retailer claims, not established clinical outcomes in the available evidence. A heated weighted blanket should not be treated as a medical therapy.

Check recalls and warnings before use
Recent CPSC actions show why checking a product’s exact identity matters. A recall or warning applies to the named products and models, not automatically to every heated blanket.
JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads
On September 17, 2026, the CPSC announced a recall of about 195,000 JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads. It reported 577 reports of smoking, melting, or burning from overheating, including 53 burn injuries. The affected blankets were sold on Amazon from September 2022 through July 2026. The CPSC says to stop using affected products immediately and contact the company for a refund. Check the model number on the remote and packaging against the CPSC recall notice.

It reported five incident reports, including one burn injury, and urged consumers to stop using and dispose of affected blankets. The blankets were sold on Amazon from February to October 2025. Review the CPSC warning to identify the affected products.

Do not use weighted blankets or weighted swaddles for babies. CPSC Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr.’s April 26, 2024 statement quotes CPSC guidance: “Don’t use weighted blankets or weighted swaddles” for your babies. Read the commissioner’s statement.
