Wegmans is scheduled to open its first Charlotte-area store at 9 a.m. on October 14, 2026, at 11550 North Community House Road in Ballantyne. The roughly 110,000-square-foot store will add a major grocery option to a market where Walmart, Harris Teeter and Food Lion already compete, but its effect on prices and market shares is not yet known.
What is opening in Ballantyne, and when?
Wegmans announced the Ballantyne location in 2024 and set its grand opening for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 9 a.m. The address is 11550 North Community House Road, on the Ballantyne campus. Because the announced date is still in the future as of October 3, 2026, shoppers should treat it as a scheduled opening, not a store that has already welcomed customers. What Wegmans says the store will offer
Wegmans describes the planned store as approximately 110,000 square feet, with produce, seafood, meat, bakery, deli, cheese, wine and beer departments. The company also says approximately 450 people are planned to work there. These are announced plans; they do not establish the final assortment, staffing on a given day or shoppers’ experience once the store opens. In its 2024 announcement, the company said it had received local requests for a store and had spent years seeking a suitable site.

Wegmans will join an established field rather than enter an empty market. The Charlotte Observer, citing Chain Store Guide’s 2026 Grocery Industry Market Share report, said Walmart was the Charlotte-area market-share leader for a seventh consecutive year and identified Harris Teeter and Food Lion among the established competitors. North Carolina grocery competition has also been intensifying as retailers including Publix, Sprouts and Lidl expand in the state, according to Axios Charlotte’s 2024 coverage. Wegmans adds another choice and may increase competitive pressure, but that is an expectation, not evidence that a particular chain will respond, lose customers or change its prices because of this store.
Will Wegmans lower grocery prices in Charlotte?
There is not yet evidence that the Ballantyne store will lower average grocery prices or produce a particular savings for shoppers. A fair comparison would require the same items and package sizes, checked around the same time, with loyalty discounts and other conditions treated consistently. Brand reputation or anecdotes cannot establish which chain is cheaper across a household’s regular basket.

Who can practically use the new store?
The location matters: this is a Ballantyne store in south Charlotte, not a new grocery option distributed across the city. Axios Charlotte’s May 2026 reporting examined how grocers tend to invest in affluent areas and discussed access challenges elsewhere, including west Charlotte. That coverage raises a practical question for shoppers—whether the Ballantyne location is reachable and useful from their neighborhood—but does not show that Wegmans will solve or worsen access conditions across Charlotte.
