For wedding photography, start with a compatible 24–70mm f/2.8 standard zoom if you need one lens to cover changing moments and framing. Add a 70–200mm f/2.8 when you need to photograph ceremonies or portraits from farther away; consider a fast 50mm or 85mm prime for portraits and available-light work. There is no universal best lens: camera mount, sensor format, venue space, working distance, shooting style, and budget determine which combination makes sense.

Which lens suits each part of a wedding?

Wedding coverage shifts from broad scenes to individual expressions and details. Match the lens role to the working distance and space rather than treating one focal length as a requirement.

Lens category Useful for What to consider
24–70mm standard zoom A changing mix of scenes and framing Zoom flexibility, maximum aperture, mount compatibility, size, and budget
70–200mm telephoto zoom Ceremony reach, candid framing, and portraits from farther away Working distance, reach, background separation, size, and budget
Fast 50mm or 85mm prime Portraits, available-light work, and subject separation Angle of view on your camera format, working space, aperture, and focus distance
Macro lens Close-up details Close-focus capability, focal length, mount compatibility, and how much detail work matters to you

24–70mm: flexible coverage

A standard zoom is a practical starting category when moments and composition change quickly. Nikon Professional Services says a 24–70mm zoom can serve a wide variety of scenes, while Canon’s wedding guide describes its RF 24–70mm f/2.8L as versatile for wedding celebrations. Those are system-specific examples supporting the category, not lenses that fit every camera.

70–200mm: reach without moving closer

A telephoto zoom can help when you need ceremony coverage from a distance or want to frame candid moments without approaching the subject. Nikon Professional Services notes that a 70–200mm zoom can soften backgrounds and draw attention to the subject. Canon also describes a 70–200mm lens as useful for discreet ceremony coverage.

50mm or 85mm: a prime for portraits and available light

A fast prime is an optional complement, not a required wedding purchase. Nikon Professional Services describes smooth bokeh from fast 50mm lenses and notes that an 85mm can make portraits more striking while allowing the photographer to keep some distance. Canon includes both 50mm and 85mm lenses among its wedding recommendations. Check how each focal length frames on your camera before choosing: the same number does not give the same angle of view on every sensor format.

Macro: a specialist choice for close details

A macro lens may be useful for close-up wedding details. It is a specialist option rather than a core lens for general coverage, so consider it when detail photographs are a meaningful part of your work.

How to choose a useful two-lens kit

For a general-purpose pairing, combine a mount-compatible 24–70mm standard zoom with a 70–200mm telephoto zoom. The first covers changing scenes; the second adds reach when you need to work at a distance. This is a category-based starting point, not a cross-brand test ranking or a guarantee that both lenses suit every photographer.

If your work prioritizes portraits or available-light shooting, consider whether a fast 50mm or 85mm prime better fits your preferred framing and venue space. A prime can complement a zoom, but the choice depends on how much you value that focal length and its working distance. A macro belongs in the kit when close-detail work justifies a dedicated lens.

Check camera compatibility and framing before buying

  • Match the mount to the exact camera body. Canon RF and EF, Nikon NIKKOR, and Sony FE are distinct system examples, not interchangeable compatibility advice. Confirm that a specific lens works with your body.
  • Account for sensor format. Nikon UK says a 50mm lens on a DX Z camera gives an angle of view in the 85mm ballpark. Treat that as an example of format-dependent framing, not a universal conversion rule; check the angle of view for your camera and lens combination.
  • Consider venue space and working distance. A focal length that is comfortable in a large room may be difficult to use in a small one. Decide whether you can move freely or need to frame from a fixed position.
  • Weigh flexibility against specialization. Zooms cover changing compositions; primes and macro lenses serve more specific framing or close-focus needs. Choose according to the work you actually expect to photograph.
