To find an old version of a website, start with the exact URL and query the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Its Availability API can return the closest archived capture; the timestamped replay URL lets you inspect what was saved. For a date-by-date history, use the CDX API. If you need your own preservation package rather than a public replay, save a WARC file and document its provenance.
A snapshot is evidence of what an archive captured, not proof that every live-site component behaved identically. Missing assets, blocked crawls, authentication, client-side rendering and replay-software changes can all affect the result.
What a website snapshot archive preserves
A website snapshot archive stores a web resource as it was captured at a recorded time. Depending on the capture, that can include the HTML response, images, stylesheets, scripts, fonts, videos, redirects and HTTP metadata. A replay system reconstructs those records when you open an archived URL.
The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine provides APIs for checking whether a URL is archived, finding a closest capture, listing capture history and replaying pages. A successful availability response includes an archived URL, a timestamp and a status. An empty archived_snapshots object means no currently accessible capture was found.

“Archived” does not mean “complete.” A crawler may have missed a stylesheet, been refused by a robots policy, failed to execute JavaScript or lacked access to a logged-in page. Treat the capture timestamp and the saved resources as the boundaries of what you can claim.
Find the closest Wayback snapshot
1. Start with the exact URL
Include the protocol, hostname, path, query string when it matters, and a trailing slash when the original site used one. These can be different archive keys:
https://example.com/https://example.com/abouthttp://example.com/abouthttps://example.com/about?edition=print
If you only know a domain, try the home page first, then the specific path shown in an old link, document or citation.
2. Query the Availability API
Open this URL in a browser, replacing the encoded target:
https://archive.org/wayback/available?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fabout
Or use cURL:
curl "https://archive.org/wayback/available?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fabout"
Look for archived_snapshots.closest.url, its timestamp and status. The timestamp is normally formatted as YYYYMMDDhhmmss. If no closest capture is returned, broaden the search to the domain, remove a changing query string, or use CDX history.
3. Open and record the replay
Save all four items together:
- the original URL;
- the capture timestamp;
- the complete archived replay URL;
- notes about missing assets, redirects, warnings or interactive features.
When citing a snapshot, cite the timestamped replay rather than only the archive home page. A reader should be able to open the same capture you inspected.

List and filter a page’s capture history with CDX
The CDX Server is intended for complex querying, filtering and analysis of Wayback capture data. A basic query is:
curl "https://web.archive.org/cdx/search/cdx?url=example.com/about&output=json&fl=timestamp,original,statuscode,mimetype,digest&filter=statuscode:200&collapse=digest"
The requested fields show the capture time, original URL, HTTP status, MIME type and content digest. collapse=digest removes consecutive captures with identical content, making a long history easier to scan. Other useful filters include:
from=20180101&to=20201231to restrict dates;filter=mimetype:text/htmlto focus on HTML;filter=statuscode:200to exclude error responses;matchType=prefixto examine a path and its descendants;fl=timestamp, originalfor a compact export.
CDX results are capture records, not a guarantee that every listed replay is intact today. Test the replay URL before relying on it.
Construct a timestamped replay URL
A standard replay has this form:
https://web.archive.org/web/20200115123045/https://example.com/about
The 14-digit value is the capture timestamp. Keep the original scheme after the timestamp; changing http to https can select a different capture.

How to verify what a snapshot proves
Check identity and time
Confirm that the replay shows the intended hostname and path, then compare the displayed capture time with the date you need. A “closest” result may be before or after your target date. State that relationship explicitly—for example, “the closest available capture was 12 January, three days before the requested date.”
Inspect completeness
- Open the page’s images, stylesheets and scripts from the replay, not from the live site.
- Look for broken-image icons, console errors, missing fonts, video placeholders and redirect loops.
- Test important links; a page can be archived while linked assets are absent.
- Check whether content is generated only after login, a form submission or client-side API call.
Separate capture evidence from interpretation
A saved HTML response can establish that the archive received particular bytes at a particular time. It cannot by itself prove how the page looked on every device, whether a user could complete an interaction, or whether uncaptured API responses contained additional content.
What is a WARC file?
WARC (Web ARChive) is the standardized container used to store harvested web resources and their metadata. ISO 28500:2009 formally released the format on 15 May 2009. It extends ARC, a format the Internet Archive had used since 1996.

A WARC file is a sequence of records. The specification defines:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Record type | Purpose |
|---|---|
warcinfo |
Describes the crawl, collection or file. |
response |
Stores an HTTP response, commonly including headers and payload. |
request |
Stores the request sent to the server. |
resource |
Stores a payload without full HTTP protocol information. |
| metadata | Associates descriptive or administrative information with another record. |
| revisit | Points to an earlier identical payload to avoid duplication. |
| conversion | Records a converted representation of another record. |
A response record can contain a complete HTTP response and headers, but the specification cautions that a response record is not an absolute guarantee that the material was a legally valid HTTP response when capture problems occurred.
WARC versus a screenshot
A screenshot is a visual rendering at one viewport and state. A WARC is a preservation and exchange package containing captured requests, responses and metadata. WARC can support later replay and analysis; it does not automatically create a pixel-perfect, interactive reproduction.
Replaying WARC collections
Replay depends on compatible software and on having every required file. OpenWayback and pywb are established replay tools. One website may be distributed across multiple WARC or ARC files, so keep the collection’s file inventory and identifiers with your copy.
Compare archive approaches before relying on one
| Approach | Best for | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wayback Availability | Quickly checking whether a closest public capture exists | Returns one closest result, not a complete history |
| Wayback CDX | Date filtering, status/MIME analysis and bulk capture queries | Records may replay with missing assets or later changes |
| Local WARC collection | Institutional preservation, audit trails and independent replay | Requires capture, storage and replay software |
| On-demand screenshot service | Producing a current visual asset or PDF through an API | Captures the requested moment, not an existing historical record |
Use four decision axes: capture scope (one URL or a linked crawl), replay fidelity, provenance (timestamp, target, software and policy), and queryability. For externally exposed identifiers, IIPC guidance recommends a Collection+URL+Timestamp combination.

- Cache API responses locally when investigating many URLs, and rate-limit requests so a large analysis does not become an availability problem.
- Store raw JSON from Availability and CDX beside your notes; transformed spreadsheets can lose timestamps or status fields.
- Hash downloaded files and record the retrieval time if the material may be used in an audit or dispute.
- Keep the original archive URL unchanged. URL shorteners and tracking parameters weaken reproducibility.
- Expect replay behavior to evolve as archive software, browser security and certificate handling change. Preserve a WARC or screenshot when long-term reproducibility matters.

FAQ
Can I request an exact historical date?
You can ask CDX for a date range and choose the nearest capture, but an archive cannot manufacture a capture from a day on which it did not crawl the page.
Does a WARC file contain the whole internet?
No. It contains the resources and metadata included in a particular crawl or collection. Large sites commonly span multiple WARC or ARC files.
Is a Wayback replay suitable as legal proof?
It can preserve useful evidence, but admissibility depends on jurisdiction, chain of custody and the issue being proved. Preserve the exact URL, timestamp, raw records and your retrieval notes.
