Website performance monitoring works best as a mix of measurements, not a single score or service. Use real-user monitoring (RUM) to learn what visitors actually experience, scheduled synthetic checks to catch availability and journey failures between visits, and lab tests to reproduce performance issues and compare changes before release.
What website performance monitoring measures
“Performance” can mean whether a site is reachable, how quickly a page loads, whether it responds to interaction, whether the layout shifts, or whether a visitor can complete a task. Those are related questions, but they are not answered by the same check.
Separate the data by how it was collected. Field data comes from real browsing sessions. Lab data is collected under controlled conditions. Synthetic monitoring repeats a request or browser journey on a schedule. A report is useful only when you know which of those datasets it represents and the time window or test conditions behind it.
Field data: what visitors actually experienced
Real-user monitoring (RUM) gathers performance information from actual visits, often through browser-side instrumentation. It helps reveal variation across devices, networks, browsers, pages, and user contexts that a single controlled test cannot represent.

Chrome UX Report (CrUX)-based tools provide aggregate field context for Chrome users. Their reporting windows differ: PageSpeed Insights and Search Console report the previous 28 days, while the CrUX dataset and dashboard are organized by calendar month. That makes CrUX valuable for broad trends, but not necessarily immediate feedback about a release.
Google recommends supplementing CrUX-based tools with a site’s own RUM for more detailed and timely feedback. A site can use a dedicated provider or instrument field-measurable Web Vitals with Google’s field measurement guidance and the web-vitals JavaScript library.
Look beyond the median
A median can hide a slow tail of visits. Inspect the distribution of experiences and the percentage that meet the “good” threshold. Google uses a 75% good-experience target for each Core Web Vital assessment; that is a way to evaluate the distribution, not a promise that every visitor had a good experience.
Lab tests and synthetic checks: repeatable tests, different purposes
Lab tests run in a controlled environment, which makes them useful for reproducing issues, debugging, comparing code changes, and running checks in development or continuous integration. Lighthouse and WebPageTest are examples. Their controlled results cannot describe every visitor’s device, connection, or browsing context.
Scheduled synthetic monitoring repeats a request or browser test at chosen intervals, often from configured locations. It can establish a baseline when a site has little traffic, test availability before users report a problem, or check a release before it reaches most visitors. It complements RUM rather than replacing it. New Relic’s documentation describes synthetic checks alongside browser monitoring and APM, which report on real traffic: synthetic monitoring overview.
| Method | What it answers | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| RUM / field data | What performance visitors experienced across real sessions and conditions. | It reflects the instrumented population and reporting window; it is not a controlled reproduction of one test. |
| CrUX | Aggregate field context from Chrome users. | Reporting is less immediate than a site’s own RUM, and its coverage is not every user or browser. |
| Lab test | How a page performs under a reproducible test setup; useful for debugging and release comparisons. | It does not represent the full range of real visitor conditions. |
| Synthetic check | Whether a scheduled endpoint, page, or scripted journey works from a configured test environment. | It verifies the configured test, not every real user’s experience. |
Which Core Web Vitals should you track?
Track the three Core Web Vitals together, while remembering they describe particular aspects of experience rather than all of website performance:

- equipped with atom n2600 d2700 processor, compatible with many freebsd based router systems, linux distros, or win.os supported, easy configuration and management
- Please note, this is a barebone only. A system memory, a storage drive and an operating system are needed to complete this system
- 13-19 inches 1u, 50w power, with power cord, make sure to use a big brand memory and ssd/hdd with quality assurance
- Designed with console, 2 x usb, 4 x lan, vga, power switch, size at 290 x 180 x 44mm
- There are 2 inside reserved fans on chassis, which could be removed freely or be turned on in a high temperature environment to ensure the best function of the product
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): loading performance.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): interactivity.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): visual stability.
New Relic’s browser monitoring documentation describes browser-side trends and troubleshooting views for these metrics: browser monitoring overview. State whether each reported value comes from field data or a lab test. Do not treat a single lab score as the visitor experience, or infer that Core Web Vitals alone guarantee search rankings, conversions, or revenue. The threshold values can change; check Google’s current official thresholds before publishing or configuring a pass/fail policy.

Ping or HTTP check
A ping or basic HTTP check tests reachability and can enforce a response-time limit. It is a useful first signal for an outage, but it cannot prove that the page rendered correctly or that a visitor can complete a task.
Scripted API check
A scripted API check can chain requests and validate status, content, and timing. Use it when a backend transaction matters independently of the browser—for example, checking that an API response contains expected data.
Simple browser check
A browser check loads a page in a browser such as Chrome or Firefox, exercising JavaScript and page assets as well as CDN and cache behavior. It can assert that expected content or an element appears. That makes it more representative of a rendered page than a ping.
Scripted browser journey
A browser journey can automate multi-step or authenticated flows such as signing in, searching, or checking out. These checks take more effort to run and maintain. Prioritize paths that matter most to revenue or user trust, and keep credentials and test accounts under appropriate access controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRUM / browser monitoring
Browser monitoring can report actual page-load timing, Web Vitals, JavaScript errors, trends, and segments such as device or user agent. It helps answer what happened to visitors; synthetic checks help catch configured failures even when there are few visitors to observe.

How to choose a website monitoring tool
Compare tools against the same pages, locations, devices, check rate, and journeys you intend to monitor. These questions help distinguish measurement coverage from dashboards and marketing labels.
- Data source: Does it provide RUM, CrUX or PageSpeed Insights data, lab audits, synthetic checks, or a combination? What period does each result represent?
- Coverage: Can it test the relevant pages, APIs, devices, and locations? Can it reach an internal or private application if needed?
- Browser fidelity: Does it make a basic endpoint request, load a full browser page and assets, or validate visible content and interactions?
- Debugging depth: Can the team connect browser symptoms to backend services, traces, JavaScript errors, or releases?
- Alerting and history: Can you set actionable thresholds, limit noisy alerts, and compare trends across releases or seasonal traffic?
- Setup and ownership: Does it need a browser agent, JavaScript instrumentation, an API key, custom scripts, or CI integration? Who will maintain instrumentation and checks?
- Cost at your workload: Estimate based on pages, locations, frequency, and scripted journeys—not just a headline quota. Check current allowances and overage rates before committing.
- Privacy and data handling: Verify what user or session data is collected, how access and retention work, and whether consent and geographic requirements are met.
New Relic is one documented example, not a universal “best” choice. Its product pages describe synthetic checks for availability, Core Web Vitals, page and content load, broken links, and SSL validity. The Core Web Vitals monitor requires a Google PageSpeed Insights API key. Its displayed features, quotas, and pricing can change, so verify the current offer directly before evaluating cost: New Relic website performance monitoring.
A practical monitoring mix
- Instrument real traffic. Add RUM for the pages and visitor segments that matter, and track LCP, INP, CLS, and JavaScript errors. Use CrUX as aggregate context rather than as a substitute for timely site-specific data.
- Build a repeatable lab check. Test important pages under a consistent setup before and after changes. Keep conditions comparable so a difference is interpretable.
- Schedule availability checks. Start with critical public endpoints and pages. Set an interval and locations suited to the outage-detection need, then alert on sustained failures rather than every transient blip.
- Test a small number of key journeys. Add scripted API or browser steps for high-value tasks such as login or checkout. Assert meaningful outcomes, not just that a URL returned a response.
- Review data with its context. When an alert or regression appears, identify whether it came from real users, a lab run, or a synthetic check, then use the method best suited to reproduce and diagnose it.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Check frequency and breadth affect both the usefulness and the operating cost of synthetic monitoring. More locations and more pages produce more observations, but also more runs to pay for and maintain. Scripted journeys add coverage of real tasks while increasing the chance that test data, authentication, or a changed interface will require maintenance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →RUM gives a view of actual sessions, but instrumentation and data governance are part of the system: determine what is collected and who can access it. Synthetic monitoring offers a repeatable signal, but a passing check only establishes that the configured test succeeded from its test environment. Lab tests are controllable, but a reproducible result is not a guarantee of universal user performance.
Do not convert vendor case studies into forecasts. New Relic’s page includes a Kurt Geiger customer testimonial reporting a Core Web Vitals score change from 45 to 90 and saying 99% of customers had a good experience. Those are that customer’s statements on the vendor’s site, not an independent study or an expected result for other sites.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot as part of a visual check, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server—not a replacement for RUM, synthetic journeys, or a full performance-monitoring program. Its one-call API can return a screenshot or PDF, and it is useful when your own workflow needs a rendered capture without managing browser setup. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Lighthouse be fast while real visitors experience a slow site?
Yes. Lighthouse is a controlled lab test; real visitors use different devices, networks, and contexts. Compare it with field data from RUM or CrUX to understand actual experiences.
Does a ping confirm that checkout works?
No. A ping or basic HTTP check confirms reachability and response timing, not that a page renders or a multi-step transaction succeeds. Use a scripted browser journey for that task.
Are Core Web Vitals a complete measure of website performance?
No. LCP, INP, and CLS cover loading, interactivity, and visual stability. Availability, errors, API behavior, and task completion need other checks too.
