If a website is broken in Brave, open that site’s Shields panel from the address bar. You can turn Shields down just for that site, or adjust an individual protection to make a narrower change. Brave says Shields can sometimes cause sites to break, but lowering it is not guaranteed to fix every problem.
How to change Shields for a broken website
-
Open the affected website in Brave.
-
Click the Shields (lion) icon in the address bar. The panel identifies the domain currently in focus.
-
Choose whether to turn Shields down for this site or open Advanced controls and change a specific protection. Labels and layout can vary by platform or browser version, so use the controls shown in your panel. Brave’s guide to global and site-specific Shields settings explains the options.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Reload the page and see whether it works. If it does not, restore the previous setting if appropriate and test an individual control instead.

Brave remembers site-specific choices for that site, including if you later change your global defaults. The setting does not turn Shields off for other sites. Brave’s Shields overview advises checking that a site is trusted before lowering protection.
Turn Shields down or change one protection?
| Approach | Scope and trade-off | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Turn Shields down for the site | Quick, broad change for the site in focus; some privacy protections are disabled there. | When you want a fast compatibility check on a site you trust. |
| Adjust an individual protection | More targeted, but requires testing; other protections may remain enabled. | When you want to narrow down what is interfering or retain more protections. |
Brave’s individual controls cover trackers and ads, scripts, cookies, fingerprinting, and site data. There is no basis for assuming which one is responsible on a particular website; test changes one at a time and reload after each. Brave’s explanation of Shields controls notes that blocking scripts can break many sites because they depend on JavaScript.

What the change means for privacy
Lowering Shields allows the affected page to load content that Shields might otherwise block, and disables some privacy protections for that site. It is a per-site exception, not a browser-wide switch. Check that you trust the site before making the change, and avoid treating a successful load as proof that every protection can safely remain lowered.

Why the setting exists
Brave has documented compatibility trade-offs in its blocking behavior. In a post about version 1.30, it said Brave would by default stop applying network-level filter-list blocking to same-site subresources; users wanting more aggressive, occasionally site-breaking behavior could select the aggressive trackers-and-ads setting. That is historical, version-specific context—not an explanation for a current failure or a complete account of today’s defaults. Brave’s version 1.30 compatibility post describes that change.
