Separate the website from the alerting path. A reliable setup checks the user-facing endpoint or workflow, confirms failures from an appropriate number of probes, records enough evidence to diagnose the event, and independently tests whether notifications are being delivered. Treat the time a check first fails, the time an incident is created, and the time a person receives a page as different timestamps.
What your monitor actually proves
An HTTP or TCP uptime check answers a narrow question: did a configured endpoint respond within the timeout and satisfy the expected criteria? Google Cloud documents periodic HTTP, HTTPS and TCP checks for public and private targets, with success, failure and latency results (Google Cloud synthetic monitoring overview).
A synthetic monitor can execute a sequence such as opening a login page, submitting credentials, loading a checkout flow or calling a third-party API. That tests a user journey rather than only the front door. Neither type proves that every browser, region, account or downstream dependency is healthy.

Write the check contract
Before enabling alerts, record these values in the monitor description or runbook:
#1 Best Overall

- SMART DASHBOARD WITH DATA HISTORY & REMOTE ACCESS: Layla tracks room temperature and logs noise and occupancy trends over time. Review historical reports, spot peak-hour disturbances, enforce quiet hours, and manage properties remotely from one app.
- PRIVACY-FIRST DESIGN, NO CAMERAS OR AUDIO RECORDING: Layla measures decibel levels only and never captures conversations or personal data, keeping you compliant with Airbnb, VRBO, and local rules. Privacy Shield mode disables motion on demand.
- NO SUBSCRIPTION, NO HIDDEN FEES, PAY ONCE AND OWN YOUR DATA: Every feature unlocked forever, including AI insights, unlimited history, real-time alerts, and quiet-hours automation. Easy setup, works with Alexa & Google Home.
- Exact URL, host, port and HTTP method.
- Expected status code or status-code range.
- Required response text, JSON field or page element, if applicable.
- Timeout and whether redirects, TLS errors and certificate warnings are failures.
- Probe locations, schedule and confirmation/retry policy.
- Maintenance windows and the owner who can change the endpoint.
A check that only expects a 200 response can pass while an error page is returned with status 200. Conversely, a strict body match can fail after harmless copy or localization changes. Test the contract against known-good and known-bad responses.
How to distinguish an outage from a flaky check
Use independent vantage points
One probe can fail because of its own network path, DNS resolver, TLS handshake or timeout. Google Cloud’s documented default uptime alert policy requires simultaneous failures from checkers in at least two regions; its troubleshooting guidance recommends that default to reduce notifications caused by transient failures, while allowing the policy to be edited (Google Cloud troubleshooting guidance). This is a vendor default, not a universal rule.
Grafana likewise notes that multiple probes reduce alert flapping and counteract internet unreliability, but probe count and frequency must be balanced against cost (Grafana Synthetic Monitoring introduction; uptime and reachability).

Choose confirmation deliberately
| Policy choice | Benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single probe, immediate page | Fastest possible detection | Most sensitive to transient probe failures |
| Several probes must fail | Better evidence of broad customer impact | May miss a regional outage or delay a page |
| Retest or “for” window | Suppresses short blips | Notification arrives after the condition remains true for that interval |
| Frequent checks | Shorter detection interval | More executions and potentially higher cost |
Do not copy another service’s probe count or retest duration blindly. Set the policy from your outage tolerance: a payment endpoint may justify faster escalation than a low-impact marketing page.

Route alerts by customer impact
Prometheus summarizes its alerting guidance this way: “keep alerting simple, alert on symptoms, have good consoles to allow pinpointing causes, and avoid having pages where there is nothing to do” (Prometheus Alerting). Apply that principle to monitoring:
- Page: confirmed, user-impacting failure with an on-call action, such as a checkout workflow failing from multiple locations.
- Notify or ticket: elevated latency, one-region failure, certificate expiry warning or a repeated but non-urgent dependency error.
- Dashboard only: isolated probe failures, short blips and diagnostic signals with no immediate action.
Every page should link to the monitor, raw result or screenshot, relevant logs, the deployment view and a concise runbook. Include the first-failure timestamp, affected locations, observed status or error, latency, and the next decision the responder should make.
Separate outage time from delivery time
Google Cloud describes an alert as conditions plus notification channels and documentation, with an incident record created when the condition is met (Alerting overview). Evaluation latency, data-visibility delays, a configured retest window and channel behavior all affect arrival time (metric alerting behavior). Record three timestamps: first failed execution, condition/incident creation and notification delivery. Do not promise instant delivery when the policy intentionally waits for confirmation.

Distinguish endpoint failure from monitor failure
A timeout, DNS error or query-execution failure may mean the site is unavailable, the probe cannot reach it, or the monitoring system itself is broken. Grafana’s connectivity-error guidance exposes a deliberate alert-state choice for query execution errors and timeouts and recommends synthetic checks for external availability (Grafana connectivity errors). Decide whether “no data,” query error and timeout should page, create a separate monitoring-health incident, or remain visible without paging. Document the choice.

Monitor the monitoring path
Use an independent signal for the notification path: for example, a scheduled test alert to a dedicated mailbox or chat channel, plus an external check of the alert receiver’s public health endpoint. Keep credentials, escalation ownership and failure alerts separate from the application monitor. A healthy website with a broken integration is still an operational failure.
Why does my monitor show as down?
Work from the earliest failed execution, not the latest summary badge:
- Identify the start time. Compare the first failure with deploys, DNS changes, certificate rotations, provider incidents and maintenance windows.
- Read the raw result. Capture status code, response headers, body assertion, DNS/TLS message, timeout phase, latency and probe location.
- Compare locations. A single-region failure suggests routing, firewall, CDN or regional dependency issues; simultaneous failures are stronger evidence of broad impact.
- Reproduce the contract. Verify URL, method, redirects, authentication, expected content, timeout and user-agent assumptions. Test from a path comparable to the probe.
- Check the application. Correlate load balancer, web-server, database, queue and third-party logs with the first-failure time.
- Check policy state. Confirm retest windows, multi-region conditions, disabled monitors and maintenance schedules.
- Classify the incident. Restore service, narrow the alert condition, or fix the probe if the endpoint is healthy and the check is wrong.
Why didn’t I receive a notification?
A failed execution does not necessarily satisfy the alert condition. Check these layers in order:
- Was the failure repeated for the required confirmation window or retry count? UptimeRobot, for example, retries before marking a monitor down (UptimeRobot monitor-down troubleshooting).
- Did enough regions or probes fail to meet the policy?
- Was the alert rule enabled, and did it create an incident?
- Is the contact active and attached to this monitor? UptimeRobot specifically directs operators to verify both points (UptimeRobot troubleshooting guide).
- Is the email, SMS, phone or chat integration authenticated, rate-limited, suppressed or in a provider outage?
- Did the message land in spam, a muted channel or an escalation schedule outside its active hours?
- Can you deliver a test notification through the same integration?
Keep a notification test in your runbook and run it after changing recipients, routing rules, webhook credentials or escalation schedules.

Evidence that makes an alert actionable
Retain the request configuration and response evidence for every failed execution where privacy and retention rules permit. Useful fields include:
- Probe region, IP family and user agent.
- DNS, connect, TLS, time-to-first-byte and total durations.
- Final URL after redirects and status code.
- Matched or missing response text, selector or JSON field.
- Error type and message, execution time, logs and metrics.
- For synthetic journeys, the failed step, browser console output and a redacted screenshot.
Google Cloud documents retained failure details and latency for uptime checks, and error, execution-time, logs and metrics for synthetic executions (synthetic monitoring overview). Define retention and redaction rules before capturing credentials, tokens or personal data.
DIY screenshots for visual diagnosis
When a check reports a content or workflow failure, a screenshot can show whether users see a consent wall, login redirect, JavaScript error or blank page. Capture only what your incident policy allows, mask sensitive data, and avoid treating a screenshot as proof that every user is affected.

Choosing a monitoring design
| Requirement | Design question |
|---|---|
| Availability | Is an endpoint check sufficient, or must the monitor execute login, checkout or another journey? |
| Geographic confidence | Which customer regions need independent probes, and what constitutes confirmation? |
| Speed versus noise | How much retest delay is acceptable before paging? |
| Diagnosis | Will the system retain response details, logs, metrics, failed steps and redacted screenshots? |
| Alert resilience | Are email, SMS, phone, chat and webhook paths tested independently? |
| Operations | Can responders open the monitor, incident, logs and runbook from one alert? |
| Cost | What do the chosen frequency, probe count, scripted-browser runs and retention consume? |
UptimeRobot advertises website and endpoint checks, multiple locations, alert channels, recurrence settings and maintenance windows (UptimeRobot Website Monitoring). Google Cloud and Grafana provide documented alternatives for uptime and synthetic monitoring. Compare the actual configuration, integrations, diagnostic retention and pricing at your required frequency rather than selecting by feature count.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every failed check page the on-call engineer?
No. Page only when the condition represents actionable customer impact. Route isolated probe failures and short blips to a dashboard, ticket or lower-disruption channel.
Is a successful HTTP status enough to declare the site healthy?
No. A 200 response can contain an application error, while a strict content or workflow check can reveal failures that reachability alone misses.
How can I test alert delivery safely?
Use the monitoring platform’s test notification with a dedicated recipient, then verify the message in the real mailbox, chat channel, phone or webhook receiver. Record the test and repeat it after routing changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should a responder do first during a suspected outage?
Find the earliest failed execution, inspect its raw error and location, compare other probes, and correlate that timestamp with deployments, infrastructure logs and maintenance windows.
