There is no proven website background or button color that works best for every audience. Choose a palette that fits your brand and users, then test the actual text, button, link, and icon color pairs for contrast. The clearest current warning is accessibility: WebAIM’s 2026 automated analysis detected low-contrast text on 83.9% of the top one million home pages it evaluated.

What the latest website color statistics show

WebAIM’s 2026 analysis used its WAVE stand-alone API to evaluate the home pages of the top one million websites. It found:

  • 83.9% had detected low-contrast text. WebAIM reported 79.1% for 2025. These are year-to-year results from automated analysis; they do not establish why the rate changed.
  • 95.9% had at least one detected WCAG failure. The figure covers failures detectable by the automated analysis, not every WCAG requirement or a complete manual audit of each site.
  • 34 distinct low-contrast text instances per home page on average.

These figures point to a practical problem: a palette can look polished and still make text difficult to read. They do not mean that any particular hue is inherently inaccessible; contrast depends on the colors paired together and how they are used.

Is there a best color for a website background or button?

No single background or call-to-action color is established as best for all websites. A color that suits one brand, audience, or setting may not suit another, and isolated color or conversion anecdotes do not prove that the same choice will work elsewhere.

Design Swatch A CMYK and Pastels Color Reference Guide with 50 Cards and 300 Design-Focused Colors (CMYK)
  • REAL CMYK - Design Swatch is a realistic representation of straight CMYK industrial printing. With Design Swatch, you'll know what to expect when using a certain color from the deck.
  • DESIGN-FOCUSED - Instead of filling up the deck with nonsense colors or colors that Graphic Designers or Small Business owners will never use, we filled up our deck with design-focused colors. 300 CMYK colors, all of which are perfectly usable in design.
  • PRINT-READY ACCURACY – Every swatch is tested against real-world CMYK printers, so what you see in the deck is what you'll get on paper.
  • COST-EFFICIENT – Professional color tools are often overpriced. Design Swatch delivers premium quality at a fraction of the cost—perfect for freelancers and growing brands.
  • CMYK TO HEX - With Design Swatch, you can convert CMYK to Hex (and vice versa) easily and effortlessly by using the Hex codes on each card. It also doubles as a color palette planner for your design or web project.

Start with the identity and context of the site. Then evaluate each combination in the interface where it appears: body text against its background, links against surrounding content, button labels against button fills, and meaningful icons against their backgrounds. A color contrast checker can help assess these pairs, but it cannot establish that the whole site conforms to accessibility requirements.

How much contrast should website text have?

MDN summarizes WCAG AA contrast guidance as a minimum ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text. In this guidance, large text means at least 18pt, or at least 14pt when bold. Check the actual foreground and background colors used, rather than relying on a general impression that a combination looks readable.

W3C WAI recommends sufficient contrast, including between text and background, and notes that it can help people read in varying lighting conditions. Contrast also matters for interface elements such as links, buttons, and information-bearing icons—not just body copy. Check these combinations while choosing the palette so problems can be addressed before implementation.

Can color alone communicate status or meaning?

No. W3C’s WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.1 says color must not be the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing an element. For example, do not mark an error only with a red border or a required field only with a color change.

Add another perceivable cue, such as a text label, icon, shape, or pattern. That way the meaning remains available to people who cannot distinguish the colors and is less likely to be missed in different viewing conditions.

Should you use dark mode on your website?

Dark mode is a design choice, not a universal accessibility fix. The evidence here does not establish that dark themes outperform light themes for every site. Whichever appearance you choose, check the contrast of the actual text, links, buttons, and icons in that theme, and make sure information is not communicated by color alone.

If a site offers both themes, assess the color pairs in each one; a combination that works in the light theme does not automatically work in the dark theme. Consider brand and audience fit, legibility, and use in different lighting conditions rather than assuming one palette is universally better.
