Web3 is not inherently sustainable or unsustainable: its environmental impact depends on how a network is secured, where its electricity comes from, what resources it uses, and whether an application delivers measurable benefits that exceed its full costs. Proof-of-work mining can consume substantial electricity; proof of stake is a much lower-energy design path, but it does not make every network or application environmentally beneficial.

What does Web3 sustainability mean?

“Web3” covers different technologies and services built around blockchain networks, not one uniform system. Sustainability therefore involves two separate questions:

  • Network footprint: What electricity, emissions, water, land, hardware, and other resources are required to operate the network and its surrounding services?
  • Application value: Does a particular blockchain application produce environmental or social benefits that are greater than the costs of building and running it, compared with a practical alternative?

A climate-themed token or a proof-of-stake network is not, by itself, evidence of a net sustainability benefit. Claims need to be evaluated at both levels.

How consensus affects blockchain energy use

Proof of work

Proof of work secures a network by having miners compete to find valid solutions to computational puzzles. That competition makes mining electricity-intensive. Bitcoin is the best-known example. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimated that Bitcoin mining used 121 TWh in 2023, 34 times its estimated 2015 level. This is a historical estimate for Bitcoin mining, not a live figure and not an estimate for all Web3 activity. UNCTAD’s 2024 Digital Economy Report also cites a separate estimate that energy use specifically due to blockchain activities grew by 2,000–3,500% between 2015 and 2022; that broader figure should not be conflated with Bitcoin’s 2023 estimate.

Proof of stake

Proof of stake selects validators based on the crypto assets they commit to the network, rather than requiring miners to compete through energy-intensive computation. It is a lower-energy design path, but the exact footprint still depends on the network and how it is estimated. In its discussion of Ethereum’s September 2022 transition to proof of stake, UNCTAD reported an expected 99.95% reduction in energy use, attributing that expectation to de Vries (2022). That is a cited expectation, not a measurement established by the report itself. The OECD’s analysis of digital assets’ environmental impact discusses why consensus design matters.

What the available energy and emissions figures show

Network or estimate Figure Scope and qualification
Bitcoin mining 121 TWh of energy in 2023 UNCTAD estimate published in 2024; estimated at 34 times the 2015 level. It is not a current live estimate or an all-Web3 total. Source
Bitcoin energy supply mix Coal: 45%; natural gas: 21% United Nations University’s 2023 summary of an assessment covering 2020–2021. These percentages describe that study period, not today’s mix. Source
Ethereum Approximately 2,601 MWh of annual electricity use; estimated annual emissions of 870 tonnes CO2e Figures reported on Ethereum.org’s energy page, accessed October 4, 2026. The page says they are estimates based on publicly available data, not an official statement or promise from Ethereum.org or the Ethereum Foundation. They are live-page estimates, not timeless constants. Source

These figures provide context, not a standardized head-to-head benchmark. They differ in network, date, scope, and estimation method. Ethereum’s reported proof-of-stake footprint is far below its former proof-of-work footprint, but an annual electricity estimate alone does not capture every environmental effect or establish the footprint of every application built on the network.

Why electricity use is not the whole environmental footprint

The effect of electricity use depends partly on how that electricity is generated and where mining or validation takes place. The United Nations University’s summary of a 2020–2021 Bitcoin energy-supply assessment reported coal at 45% and natural gas at 21%. Those historical figures illustrate why network energy consumption cannot be translated into emissions without considering the energy mix; they do not describe the current mix.

Environmental assessment also needs to consider water and land impacts, along with hardware and infrastructure. UNCTAD emphasizes assessing water use in its location-specific context: a resource burden can have different consequences depending on local conditions. A responsible network comparison should identify the network boundary—base layer, layer 2, applications, wallets, and relevant data centers or devices—rather than attributing an undefined footprint to “blockchain.”

Where blockchain might support sustainability work

Blockchain systems may be used for supply-chain monitoring and tracking, environmental monitoring, climate accounting and finance, decentralized energy systems, and coordination around shared resources. UNEP describes these as potential application areas, while a UNEP and Social Alpha Foundation report considers blockchain’s potential contribution to sustainable energy and climate work in the Global South. UNEP’s issue brief and its report on sustainable energy and climate in the Global South set out these possibilities.

Potential is not proof of impact. A shared ledger may help participants coordinate records, but it does not automatically make the information accurate, prevent fraud, create additional climate benefits, or outperform a conventional database. The case for a specific deployment depends on its baseline, data quality, governance, and measured outcomes.

How to assess a blockchain sustainability claim

Check the claimed outcome and baseline

Ask what environmental or social outcome is supposed to improve and how it is measured. A claim such as “more transparent supply chains” is not itself a quantified reduction in emissions, waste, or harm. The comparison needs a baseline that describes what would happen without the application.

Identify what the ledger replaces

Determine whether the blockchain replaces an existing process or adds a new layer alongside it. Compare the proposed system with a conventional database or other coordination method that could deliver the same result. A ledger is most defensible when multiple parties need shared, tamper-evident coordination and the measured advantages justify its added costs.

Examine data quality and accountability

Find out who supplies and verifies input data, who can correct errors, and who is accountable when the data is wrong. Tamper resistance can preserve a record after entry; it cannot establish that an original entry was true. Governance, privacy, and accountability rules are part of the sustainability case, not optional extras.

Count full costs and compare measured results

Include the relevant network’s energy and resource use, hardware, data, and implementation costs across the chosen lifecycle. Then compare those costs with measured benefits and the conventional alternative. The World Economic Forum’s guidance captures the central test: “ensuring that more environmental harm is not caused by the creation of solutions than is saved by them.” Its guidelines for improving blockchain’s environmental, social, and economic impact call for accounting for blockchain’s own energy impact.
