If a web teleprompter preview looks upright but the saved video is sideways, compare the camera track’s reported dimensions with the image the preview actually draws. On some devices those can disagree around the first camera frame. Waiting for that frame and recording the rendered image through a canvas stream can correct the orientation—but it is a device-specific workaround, not a universal fix.
Why an upright preview can save sideways
A browser recording typically gets a camera stream with getUserMedia(), displays it in a <video> element, then gives a stream to MediaRecorder. The track’s reported width and height, the pixels drawn by the video element, and the saved file’s orientation can differ. A CSS transform may make the preview look upright without changing the recorded pixels or file metadata.
In WebKit bug 323550, a reporter described this behavior on an iPhone 15 running iOS 26.6 with Safari: the front-camera preview appeared upright, while track dimensions changed around the first frame and the saved recording could be landscape when portrait was intended. In one test, the first frame appeared 356–451 ms after getUserMedia() resolved. That is a single reported observation, not a typical delay or a measure of how many devices are affected. Read the WebKit issue and its later observations.
The reporter also described landscape-reporting track dimensions in Android Chrome, but that is one author-reported result; it does not establish the behavior for Android phones generally. The issue remains a report, not confirmation of a defect across all iPhones or browsers.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual Cold Shoe Mounts: Attach microphones, lights, and accessories for enhanced photography or vlogging.
- Versatile Screw Design: 1/4" screw hole compatible with tripods, selfie sticks, cameras, and various accessories.
- 360° Rotation, 180° Tilt: Effortlessly switch between landscape and portrait mode with adjustable angle design for precise control.
- Universal Phone Compatibility: Fits smartphones from iPhone 14 to Galaxy S23 Ultra, accommodating devices within 2.16" to 3.7" width. For best results, avoid clamping directly on the side buttons. Adjust the position slightly higher or lower if your phone has thick cases or protruding buttons.
- Secure Grip: Thick non-slip silicone pad ensures stability even with a thick phone case.
How to diagnose the mismatch
- Wait for a real preview frame. Do not rely on track dimensions immediately after requesting the camera. Attach the stream to the video element and wait for it to produce a frame.
- Check the image the video element draws. Draw a frame to a small canvas and inspect its orientation—for example, by checking which corners contain pixels. Compare that with the camera track’s
getSettings()dimensions. - Check the saved file, not just the preview. Play or inspect the recording on the devices where it will be used. Confirm orientation, framing, and resolution; an upright preview does not prove the encoded result is upright.
Camera access also requires user permission and a secure page context, such as HTTPS or localhost. MDN’s getUserMedia reference explains those requirements.
Choose a recording path based on what you find
Once the first frame is available, use the relationship between the drawn frame and the track settings to choose the recording input:

- FEATURE: the tripod phone mount is adjustable by screw mechanism, 360 degree rotating, vertical(portrait mode) and horizontal(landscape mode) or any angle as you need, not necessary to take your cell phone out of a standard tripod or small tripod.
- EASY TO USE: two options for using tripod phone holder: 1. screw it directly to the tripod or selfie stick with pivoting arm, being able to 360 degrees rotating, 2. remove the phone clamp from pivoting arm and then mount on a tripod or monopod.
- ADJUSTABLE WIDTH: 2.2inch-4.1inch(55mm-105mm), attachable to any regular-size smartphone, tripod, selfie stick, monopod or camera; two standard 1/4 x 20mm female thread interfaces meeting your various needs. Very functional and compact.
- MATERIAL: the black part made of sturdy plastic, the female threads inserted are brass, the male screw is steel and soft non-slipping silica gel pads, which protect your cellphone from scratch and hold the phone securely.
- ATTACHABLE TO: most mobile phones, tripods, unipods, selfie sticks, cameras, camcorders, pico projectors, including iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max/X/XS/XR/XS Max/8/7/6/6s Plus/SE/5s/5/5c, Samsung Galaxy S10/10+/S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/S6/S6 edge, Note10/10+/9/8 and Android phones.
- They agree: Record the raw camera stream.
- The drawn frame is portrait but the track behaves as landscape: Draw the video element’s frame to a canvas and record the canvas stream. This encodes the orientation of the rendered image rather than relying on the camera track’s reported dimensions.
- The frame is wide but the intended output is portrait: Use a deliberate canvas crop, after measuring the actual drawn frame. Do not assume the reported track dimensions describe the image being displayed.
The teleprompter author’s earlier center-crop attempt illustrates the risk: cropping a reported 1080-by-1920 image to a 9:16 region produced a 608-by-1080 slice and an extreme close-up. The corrected approach measures the frame actually drawn by the video element before choosing a full-frame canvas or crop path. These are practical options, not benchmarked alternatives; check the saved output on target devices. See the author’s implementation account.

For the author’s iPhone setup, requesting landscape dimensions—width: { ideal: 1920 } and height: { ideal: 1080 }—was reported to make the phone select a camera preset and orient the picture to match how it was held. The author summarized that result as: “Ask for landscape and you get portrait, because the phone picks a real preset and turns the picture to match how it is held.” Treat this as a result from that setup, not a requirement or guarantee for other iPhones, Android devices, or browsers. The author describes the workaround and its context.

WebKit documented Safari’s MediaRecorder support in 2020, including canvas-generated tracks and MP4 recording with H.264 video and AAC audio at that time. Browser and codec support can vary, so an app should check supported recording types at runtime rather than assume a format. WebKit’s MediaRecorder overview.

What will not establish a fix
- Making the preview look right with CSS: This does not show that the recorded stream or saved file has the same orientation.
- Locking screen orientation: The available report does not establish that screen-orientation locking corrects the camera recording.
- Assuming every phone behaves the same: The iPhone evidence concerns a reported iPhone 15 on iOS 26.6; the Android evidence is one author-reported Chrome result. There is no broad prevalence figure or independent cross-device test matrix in the cited sources.
