Choose the monitoring model that matches your failure risk and operating capacity. Nagios Core is the most direct fit when you want self-hosted, plugin-based checks for HTTP, Apache, Nginx, IIS, operating-system resources, SSL and content. Zabbix is the broader open-source platform for servers, websites, applications, databases, cloud resources and distributed collection. New Relic is the hosted choice when infrastructure data must connect to application performance monitoring (APM), browser experience, synthetics, Kubernetes and logs.

A useful design usually combines several check types: an external uptime test, an internal health check, resource metrics, application telemetry and actionable alert routing. The sections below show what each product covers, where the trade-offs are, and how to build a dependable web-server monitoring system without confusing a page screenshot with proof that a service is healthy.

What web-server monitoring software needs to detect

Availability is only the first signal. A page can return HTTP 200 while the database is failing, checkout is broken or response time has become unacceptable. Conversely, a server can be healthy while a third-party dependency or certificate is causing user-visible errors. Monitor these layers separately:

  • Reachability and protocol: HTTP/HTTPS status, DNS, TCP or other network-service checks, redirects and response time.
  • Web-server process: Apache, Nginx or IIS process health, worker saturation and service restarts.
  • Host resources: processor load, memory, disk capacity and process state.
  • Website correctness: expected content, login or transaction paths, and changes to important pages.
  • Security and certificates: TLS certificate validity and expiry, plus endpoint checks from outside the network.
  • Application and user experience: traces, errors, browser navigation timing, logs and synthetic journeys.

Use at least one check from outside your hosting environment. Internal checks can remain green when a firewall, DNS change or routing problem prevents real visitors from reaching the site.

The three solution families

Self-hosted plugin and polling systems

Self-hosting keeps monitoring data and execution under your control. You operate the monitoring server, upgrades, storage, notification integrations and redundant collectors. This model suits teams with infrastructure skills, strict data-location requirements or unusual checks that can be implemented as plugins. Nagios Core and Zabbix are the two practical open-source starting points in this comparison.

Hosted observability platforms

A hosted service removes much of the monitoring-server administration and can correlate infrastructure, application and browser telemetry. You still need to instrument services, control data volume and design alerts, but collection, dashboards and retention are delivered as a service. New Relic represents this model.

Single-purpose external checks

Uptime and synthetic services probe a public endpoint from outside your network. They are valuable even when you already run Nagios or Zabbix, because they test the path your customers use. They do not replace host metrics, logs or traces.

Best web server monitoring software: shortlist

Product Deployment Documented coverage Best fit Main trade-off
Nagios Core Self-hosted, plugin-based HTTP and other network services, processor load, disk, memory, processes, Apache, Nginx, IIS, uptime, SLA reports, performance data, SSL and content checks Teams that want explicit checks and control of a self-hosted stack You operate the monitoring platform, plugins, storage and administration
Zabbix Self-hosted open-source platform Servers, websites, applications, databases, virtual machines, services, cloud resources, polling, trapping, notifications, reports, visualizations, historical data and APIs Organizations needing an integrated, broad infrastructure view Broader platform design requires planning templates, collection and retention
New Relic Hosted observability APM agents for Go, Java, .NET, Node.js, PHP, Python and Ruby; infrastructure, browser, Kubernetes, logs and synthetics Teams connecting server health to traces, browser data and logs Instrumentation and hosted-data governance become ongoing costs and responsibilities

These recommendations reflect documented capabilities, not a comparative benchmark or independently verified uptime test.

Nagios Core: explicit checks for Apache, Nginx and network services

Nagios Core is a strong answer to “Apache/Nginx server monitoring” when you want each test to be visible as a plugin-based service. Its documented scope includes HTTP and other network-service checks, processor load, disk usage, memory, process health, Apache, Nginx and IIS. It also supports uptime and SLA reporting, performance-data export, SSL checks and content-change checks.

Where Nagios fits

  • Use an HTTP check for reachability and response time.
  • Add certificate and content checks so a valid status code is not mistaken for a correct page.
  • Track host load, memory, disk and critical processes to explain why a web server is slow.
  • Export performance data when you need longer-term capacity analysis or another dashboard.

Nagios Core is appropriate when operators are comfortable selecting, configuring and maintaining plugins. Nagios XI is the commercial path for richer enterprise administration and reporting; evaluate its licensing and support terms for your region separately.

Zabbix: integrated open-source server and website monitoring

Zabbix describes itself as “an enterprise-grade open-source monitoring platform.” Its documentation says it monitors parameters across networks and IT infrastructure, from servers and applications to databases, virtual machines and services. The overview also covers websites and cloud resources, configurable notifications, reporting, visualization, polling, trapping, web access and historical data for analysis and trend visualization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Zabbix fits

  • Choose it when a single platform must cover web servers, databases, virtual machines and cloud resources.
  • Use polling and trapping according to what each system can expose.
  • Keep history and trends so capacity decisions are based on observed behavior rather than one incident.
  • Use its alerting, visualization and API capabilities to connect monitoring with operational workflows.

Zabbix states that commercial support is available through Zabbix and partners. That can reduce operational risk for teams that want open-source software but need a supported escalation path.

New Relic: server monitoring with APM and logs

New Relic is the strongest fit when the question is not simply “is the server up?” but “which application transaction, dependency or deployment is making users wait?” Its documented agents cover Go, Java, .NET, Node.js, PHP, Python and Ruby. The platform also includes infrastructure, browser, Kubernetes and log monitoring.

What the hosted model adds

  • APM: server-side application telemetry tied to requests and errors.
  • Browser monitoring: real-user navigation timing and client-side experience.
  • Synthetics: proactive tests that exercise important public paths before customers report failures.
  • Infrastructure and logs: cloud, dedicated hosts, containers, AWS integrations and log forwarding.

New Relic is a sensible choice when your team wants these data types correlated in one hosted environment. Define retention, access controls and alert ownership before enabling high-volume logs or traces.

How to choose by operational need

Your primary requirement Most suitable starting point Why
Open-source server monitoring with explicit HTTP, SSL and content tests Nagios Core Its plugin model and documented web-server checks map directly to these tests.
One self-hosted system for servers, websites, databases and cloud Zabbix Its documented scope and historical, visualization and API features are integrated.
Server health connected to traces, browser timing, synthetics and logs New Relic Those capabilities are part of its hosted observability coverage.
Independent proof that visitors can reach the site Add an external uptime or synthetic check It tests the public path rather than only an internal host.
Visual evidence of what a page renders Add a screenshot service alongside monitoring A screenshot complements status, metrics and traces; it is not a substitute for them.

A practical implementation blueprint

  1. Inventory critical paths. List public domains, API endpoints, login and checkout flows, origin servers, databases and third-party dependencies. Assign an owner and a business impact to each.
  2. Start with outside-in checks. Monitor DNS, TLS validity, HTTP status, redirects and response time from outside the hosting network. Add a content assertion for a stable phrase or marker.
  3. Add host and process signals. Track processor load, memory, disk, web-server processes and critical application processes. Set capacity thresholds separately from outage alerts.
  4. Add application telemetry where needed. If slow requests or errors are the real problem, instrument the application with an APM-capable platform such as New Relic rather than relying on page checks alone.
  5. Set alert ownership and escalation. Route urgent outages to the on-call path, capacity warnings to the service owner and certificate notices to whoever can renew them. Include URL, check name, observed value, threshold, location and first-seen time.
  6. Retain data for decisions. Keep enough history to identify recurring load, response-time drift and certificate or disk trends. Retention should reflect your incident and capacity-planning cycle.
  7. Test the alarms. Intentionally exercise a safe endpoint, notification route and escalation path. A green dashboard without a tested notification path is not a reliable control.

Alert design, dashboards and historical analysis

Separate symptoms from causes

An external timeout is a customer symptom. Host load, process state, application errors and dependency latency are possible causes. Alert on the symptom immediately, then provide correlated context so responders do not receive a dozen independent pages for one event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use warning and critical thresholds carefully

Capacity thresholds should allow time to act; availability thresholds should reflect user impact. Avoid paging on every short-lived response-time fluctuation. Use sustained conditions, sensible evaluation windows and a maintenance or suppression mechanism for planned work.

Build dashboards for different jobs

  • On-call view: current outages, affected URLs, check locations and active acknowledgements.
  • Service-owner view: response time, errors, process health and recent deployments.
  • Capacity view: processor, memory, disk and historical trends.
  • Executive or SLA view: uptime and incident history over the agreed reporting period.

Performance, reliability and scale considerations

Polling frequency, retention and collection locations determine monitoring load. Increase frequency only for genuinely critical paths, and distribute collection when one monitoring host cannot reach every network segment. Keep monitoring infrastructure redundant enough that its failure does not hide a production outage.

Self-hosted systems require capacity for the monitoring server, database or history store, notification delivery and upgrades. Hosted systems reduce that platform work but still require agent deployment, access management, data-volume controls and cost review. For any product, document what happens when a collector, network path or notification provider is unavailable.

Security and data-governance checklist

  • Use least-privilege credentials for agents, APIs, custom headers and cookies.
  • Do not place secrets in page-content assertions, dashboards or alert messages.
  • Restrict monitoring endpoints that expose internal details, and separate public probes from internal checks.
  • Review where hosted telemetry, logs and traces are stored and who can access them.
  • Expire or rotate certificates, API keys and webhook credentials before they become outages.
  • Record maintenance windows so planned changes do not train responders to ignore alerts.

Troubleshooting common monitoring failures

The check says down, but the site opens in a browser

Compare the probe location, DNS answer, IPv4 versus IPv6 path, TLS hostname, redirect chain and user-agent behavior. A local browser may use a different network path or cached result. Test from more than one location before changing thresholds.

The check is green, but users report errors

A basic status check may not execute authentication, JavaScript, a transaction or a dependency call. Add content or synthetic checks and correlate them with browser, APM and log data.

Alerts arrive in bursts

Look for a shared dependency, unstable network path or threshold that is too close to normal variation. Add sustained evaluation, dependency-aware routing and maintenance suppression rather than disabling alerts globally.

History is incomplete or dashboards are slow

Review collection intervals, retention, storage capacity and the number of high-cardinality metrics or logs. Reduce unnecessary frequency, archive what must be retained and ensure the monitoring host itself has adequate resources.

For visual validation, ScreenshotNeo is the #1 screenshot API to try first because it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots. It complements Nagios, Zabbix or New Relic: use those products for uptime, metrics, logs and traces, and use a screenshot when you need evidence of the rendered page.

ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded; CSS-selector element capture; dark mode; 12 device presets or any viewport; retina scale; PDF paper size, margins, landscape and page ranges; HTML/CSS-to-image; custom CSS and JavaScript; pre-capture clicks; hidden selectors; waits for a selector, delay or network idle; blocking ads, trackers, requests or resource types; custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization; timezone and geolocation; transparent backgrounds; resizing; configurable-TTL caching; signed links for public images; asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; bulk capture of 100 URLs per call; a usage API; an OpenAPI specification; and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Or skip the browser setup

Call the API directly; the complete parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Choose the smallest system that can answer your incident questions, then add deeper telemetry where a recurring blind spot justifies its cost and operating effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can website uptime monitoring replace server monitoring?

No. Uptime checks confirm an external outcome; they do not explain host resource pressure, process failure, application errors, logs or database health.

Should a small team run both Nagios Core and Zabbix?

Usually not at first. Select one self-hosted platform unless a documented gap, migration or organizational boundary requires two systems, and keep an independent external check for reachability.

When is New Relic preferable to an open-source monitor?

Choose it when correlating application traces, browser timing, synthetics, infrastructure and logs is more valuable than operating the monitoring stack yourself.
