Several hosts include a domain registration for the first year when you buy an eligible hosting plan, but none of these offers makes future domain renewals free. Compare the required hosting term, redemption deadline, eligible extensions, and renewal charges—not just the advertised monthly price. The four options below are sourced offer comparisons, not a ranking based on independent speed, uptime, or support tests.
What “free domain” means with web hosting
In these offers, “free” generally means the first domain registration is included if you meet the host’s plan and billing-term conditions. The domain’s later renewal is charged at the provider’s regular rate. Some providers also require you to redeem the registration within a set period or choose from a limited list of extensions.
A low monthly figure may depend on paying for a long term upfront. Check the total due at checkout and the hosting renewal price, as well as the domain renewal policy. Prices and promotions can vary by region and checkout date.
Compare the four hosting offers
| Provider | Domain eligibility and timing | Published plan price and features | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluehost | One domain for one year with qualifying 12- or 36-month hosting plans. Redeem within 90 days; eligible extensions are limited and premium domains are excluded. The domain renews automatically at the then-current rate after year one unless cancelled. | Starter is listed at $3.99/month for a 36-month term and renews at $9.99/month. Listed features include 10 websites, 10 GB NVMe storage, SSL, weekly backups, a migration tool, and 24/7 chat. | WordPress-focused shoppers who want a qualifying long-term plan. |
| SiteGround | Free domain registration for one year; its FAQ names .com, .org, and .net. | StartUp is listed at $2.99/month prepaid for 12 months, then $17.99/month. Features listed include one website, 10 GB storage, SSL, CDN, backups, email, and support. | Readers interested in the listed hosting tools and support, who have checked the higher renewal rate. |
| DreamHost | One free registration credit for eligible new accounts on annual Web Hosting, qualifying annual Managed VPS, or annual DreamPress. Monthly Web Hosting and monthly DreamPress do not qualify. Choose a listed extension and redeem within the first three months. Later renewals are charged. | A comparable current plan price is not stated in the cited policy page. Check the live plan page for pricing. | Shoppers who prefer an eligible annual plan and can meet the redemption deadline. |
| HostGator | Available on eligible new Shared, WordPress, Cloud, or eCommerce packages with 12-, 24-, or 36-month billing cycles. Eligible extensions are limited. Domain renewals are charged, and cancelling in the first year can incur a domain fee; the amount differs for .com and other eligible domains. | Promotional hosting rates apply to initial terms and renew at regular rates. A comparable price is not established in the cited offer pages. | Readers considering one of the qualifying hosting types who have checked the extension and cancellation rules. |
How to choose without being caught by the renewal price
- Confirm the exact hosting term. Check whether the offer requires annual billing or a longer commitment, and whether the advertised monthly rate is prepaid for the full term.
- Calculate the initial payment. Multiply the monthly figure by the prepaid term where applicable, then check taxes and any checkout charges. A monthly equivalent is not necessarily a monthly payment option.
- Check both renewals. Hosting and domain registration renew separately. Compare the hosting renewal rate with the domain’s regular renewal rate; the cited offer pages do not establish a universal domain renewal price.
- Verify the extension and deadline. Make sure your preferred domain ending is eligible, and note when you must redeem the credit. A premium or otherwise excluded domain may not qualify.
- Read the cancellation rule. Find out whether ending hosting early triggers a domain charge or changes your ability to keep the registration.
Which offer fits which reader?
- For a WordPress-oriented choice: Bluehost’s cited plan page lists WordPress hosting features and a domain offer. Its introductory price is tied to a 36-month term, with a higher stated hosting renewal rate.
- For a one-year prepaid plan with listed tools: SiteGround StartUp has a stated 12-month introductory price and renewal rate, plus the features shown in the table. Its domain offer names three extensions.
- For annual-plan flexibility across hosting types: DreamHost’s credit applies to several eligible annual services, but the three-month redemption period and extension list matter.
- For a longer commitment across several hosting categories: HostGator’s offer covers eligible packages on 12-, 24-, or 36-month cycles; check the eligible TLDs and early-cancellation fee before purchasing.
What these comparisons do—and do not—establish
The providers’ pages document offer terms and selected plan features. WordPress.org’s hosting directory includes Bluehost, but directory inclusion is not a comparative performance result. These sources do not establish which provider has the best uptime, fastest hosting, or best support in independent testing.
