Web hosting is the service that stores a website or web application on servers and makes it available over the internet. A domain name gives visitors a memorable address; DNS directs that address to the right destination; hosting serves the site’s files and processes its requests.
What is web hosting?
A website is made up of files and, in many cases, application code and supporting data. A hosting service provides access to the server infrastructure that stores and serves those materials when someone visits the site. Depending on the service, it may also include tools for backups, security, and performance management. AWS provides a general overview of how web hosting works.
Hosting is a service, not a physical location a site owner has to operate personally. The provider may manage some or all of the underlying servers, while the site owner remains responsible for the site itself and any tasks the plan does not cover.

A domain name, such as example.com, is the human-readable address a visitor enters. Hosting is the service that keeps the site’s files or application available. DNS—the Domain Name System—translates the domain into an IP address that internet-connected systems use to locate the destination. Cloudflare explains the role of DNS in routing domain names.
A simple analogy: the domain is the address, DNS is the lookup that finds the destination, and hosting is the online space and computing service that serves the site. The analogy has limits: a domain is not the website’s files, and DNS is not the hosting provider.
Registration, DNS management, and hosting can be handled by separate companies, even when one company offers all three. HTTPS certificates may also be provided separately, so check which company is responsible for each service.

How does web hosting work?
- A visitor requests the site. They enter a domain name or follow a link to it.
- DNS locates the destination. The domain’s DNS records direct the request to the relevant IP address or service.
- The hosting infrastructure responds. The host serves the requested files or runs application code to generate a response. A dynamic site may also retrieve or update data.
- The browser displays the result. It receives the response and renders the page for the visitor.
The exact infrastructure behind a site varies. A basic site may be served directly as files, while an application may depend on server-side processing, databases, or other services.
What are the types of web hosting services?
Hosting labels describe broad approaches to allocating computing resources and management responsibilities. They do not guarantee a particular level of performance, security, or price; details vary by plan and provider.
| Model | How it works | When it may fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared | Multiple sites use resources on the same server. | A small or new site seeking a straightforward start. | There is less control, and other sites’ resource use may affect performance. Features and upgrade costs vary. |
| VPS | A physical server is partitioned into virtual servers with more exclusive resources. | A growing site that needs more control or customization. | Configuration and administration can require more technical skill, unless the service is managed. |
| Dedicated | One customer leases an entire physical server. | A demanding workload or a need for extensive control. | It can involve higher costs and greater technical responsibility. |
| Cloud | Hosting uses cloud infrastructure; some designs distribute workloads or scale resources. | Sites with a range of sizes and architectures, depending on the service design. | “Cloud” alone does not establish performance, cost, or how much the provider manages. Compare the actual service and terms. |
AWS outlines these general hosting models. The categories are useful for orientation, but the features included in a specific plan matter more than its label.
What is the difference between web hosting and cloud hosting?
Web hosting is the broad service category: infrastructure that makes a site available online. Cloud hosting is one way to provide that service, using cloud infrastructure. Some cloud designs can distribute workloads or scale resources, but the word “cloud” does not by itself tell you how a particular service is built, what it costs, how it performs, or who manages it.

When comparing a cloud plan with another type, look at its actual resource allocation, scaling behavior, management responsibilities, and pricing terms rather than assuming that the label guarantees an advantage.
Does every website need a traditional hosting account?
No. The right architecture depends on what the site does. A static site—one served as files such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—can be hosted as files, including through a content delivery network (CDN). AWS’s static-site tutorial describes file-based hosting that can handle traffic without conventional web servers.

A dynamic site or web application may need server-side processing, a database, or application services in addition to its files. A content-management system or online store may also have requirements that a simple static site does not. The site’s technical needs—not the generic word “website”—should guide the hosting choice.

- Site requirements: Identify whether you are hosting static pages, a content-management system, an online store, or a custom application. Check that the plan supports the software and services the site requires.
- Resources and growth: Review storage, processing and memory resources, and any bandwidth or data-transfer limits. Find out what happens if traffic rises, including whether resources scale automatically, costs change, or the site is restricted. Limits and rules are specific to current plan terms.
- Management effort: Establish who handles server configuration, updates, backups, and troubleshooting. A VPS may offer more control but can require more administration; a managed service may take some of that work on, according to its terms.
- Reliability and recovery: Read the actual uptime commitment, if any, and check how backups are made, how restoration works, and what support response terms apply. Do not assume these are included or guaranteed.
- Security and HTTPS: Check certificate coverage and renewal, and clarify which security tasks belong to you versus the provider. Cloudflare documents free Universal SSL for Cloudflare domains; that is a Cloudflare-specific offering, not a general promise about hosting plans.
- Total cost and portability: Compare renewal rates, add-ons, upgrade charges, migration support, and the ability to export your site and data. A low initial price alone does not show the ongoing cost or how easily you can move.
Can the domain, DNS, hosting, and HTTPS come from different companies?
Yes. A site owner can register a domain with one company, manage its DNS elsewhere, host the site with a third provider, and use an HTTPS certificate supplied by another service. Before setup, confirm which account controls each part, who can change DNS records, and who handles certificate renewal or hosting support. AWS’s domain and hosting explanation and Cloudflare’s DNS documentation describe the distinct roles.
