For a football live-score site, both WeatherAPI.com and Open-Meteo can supply weather data for a fixture, but they differ in commercial-use terms, attribution, forecast horizons, and request budgets. Query the stadium’s latitude and longitude—not just the club or city—and treat the result as context, not an official statement about pitch conditions or whether a match will go ahead.

What a football weather API needs to do

A weather API for football fixtures should be evaluated around the way your site will use it: where a match is played, how far ahead the fixture is scheduled, what historical information you need, and whether your display and redistribution are permitted.

  • Use venue coordinates. Store each stadium’s latitude and longitude with its venue record. A club name or city-centre location can point to a different place. Open-Meteo’s forecast endpoint accepts latitude and longitude; WeatherAPI.com documents location-based queries.
  • Match the horizon to the schedule. A forecast for a fixture outside the provider’s supported horizon is not a reliable forecast for that match. Check the fields and model availability as well as the maximum number of days.
  • Plan requests around traffic. If every match-page visitor triggers a provider call, popular fixtures can multiply usage quickly. Cache results by venue and forecast time, and set refresh intervals around match proximity and provider update timing.
  • Keep weather in its proper role. A general forecast does not establish the condition of a particular pitch, player impact, or whether a fixture is postponed. Do not present it as an official match-status signal.

Choosing an API for a commercial football site

When WeatherAPI.com may fit

WeatherAPI.com is a candidate if its documented location queries, forecast fields, plan limits, and commercial-use terms match your implementation. Its documentation describes forecasts up to 14 days, while its current feature page says commercial use is allowed across plans. That permission does not mean the data can be resold: the reviewed terms prohibit selling the weather data. Review the live plan and terms for your display, caching, and redistribution pattern before launch.

When Open-Meteo may fit

Open-Meteo offers a standard API designated for non-commercial use and paid customer access with a commercial-use licence. If the site is commercial, distinguish the paid customer service from standard access and provide the required CC BY 4.0 attribution. Its configurable forecast horizon reaches up to 16 days, but the actual availability depends on the selected model. Its published call budgets are plan limits, not a recommendation for how frequently your site should refresh.

How to integrate weather into fixtures

  1. Add coordinates to venue data. Keep stable latitude and longitude values on the stadium record, then associate the fixture with that venue. For a multi-pitch site or a stadium with a roof, make clear which location the weather represents; the reviewed services do not establish roof-aware stadium weather.
  2. Request only what the page needs. Use the provider’s documented location query or coordinate parameters and select the required forecast fields and time range. Avoid requesting a long forecast for every visitor when a cached match-specific result will do.
  3. Cache and refresh deliberately. Key stored results by venue and valid forecast time. Set refresh timing according to how close the match is and the provider’s update cadence; Open-Meteo publishes model update information, but there is no single refresh interval suitable for every fixture.
  4. Keep keys out of public code. WeatherAPI.com requires key confidentiality. Put provider requests behind server-side code or another protected layer rather than placing a secret key in browser-visible JavaScript. Paid Open-Meteo customer requests also use an API key with the customer endpoint.
  5. Calculate workload before selecting a plan. Estimate calls using your actual venue count, fixture schedule, cache hit rate, and refresh strategy. A match page that calls the provider on every view can consume a budget much faster than one that reuses cached responses.
  6. Label the display responsibly. Present the information as forecast or weather context for the venue and time. Do not infer pitch condition, match postponement, or player performance from a general forecast.

Using weather in archived match pages

Historical API data is not automatically a record of what a stadium weather station measured. Open-Meteo’s historical service includes reanalysis products that reconstruct past conditions and may estimate values where observations are sparse. Its documentation lists ERA5 from 1940 and ERA5-Land from 1950. WeatherAPI.com describes historical weather beginning 1 January 2010, with archive availability depending on plan. If an archive page displays historical weather, identify the source and avoid presenting a reanalysis estimate as a direct stadium observation.

Can you call either API the most accurate at stadiums?

No universal accuracy winner is established by the documented features and plans. Stadium-level performance depends on the location, forecast lead time, selected model, and observed conditions. If accuracy is a deciding factor, compare the services against a fixed set of stadium coordinates and match lead times using an appropriate record of observed weather. A provider’s maximum horizon or feature list does not by itself prove better forecasts.
