You do not need a “wealth architect” as such. The phrase is a metaphor, not a licence, degree, or protected title. What may actually help is a single relationship in which someone is responsible for linking your investment decisions with your tax, estate, insurance, and life decisions. A money manager is typically engaged for portfolio decisions. A broader planning relationship can cover more ground, but how much more depends entirely on the provider and its written agreement. This guide explains how to tell the difference and how to check any provider before you commit.

What “wealth architect” means in practice

Several firms use “wealth architect” to describe a coordinated planning relationship, and they do not agree on what it includes. The same words can describe an investment-led service in one country and a set of trust, estate, and tax services in another. Treat the label as marketing language until the provider’s own documents confirm the scope.

WealthArchitects, which describes itself as an independent registered investment adviser, presents a staged process. It starts by understanding a client’s goals and finances, then builds a plan that spans several areas, and then implements and revisits that plan over time. (WealthArchitects, “What We Do”) The areas it lists include investment management, tax strategy, insurance, estate planning, debt management, philanthropy, and life transitions. (WealthArchitects, “What We Do”) Other providers may list a different set, and no firm should be assumed to deliver every item itself.

Money manager versus broader planning relationship

The clearest way to compare the two is to ask what each relationship is built around. An investment-focused engagement is organised around portfolio decisions. A planning-led engagement starts from the household or business and then decides which specialists are needed. The table below shows the potential difference. It describes what each model can include, not what every provider of that model actually offers.

Area Investment-focused money manager Broader planning relationship
Asset allocation and diversification Core of the service Included alongside other areas
Risk management and rebalancing Core of the service Included, with review tied to the wider plan
Tax strategy Not necessarily in scope May be integrated; often delivered with an outside tax professional
Insurance Not necessarily in scope May be reviewed; may be placed through an outside insurer
Estate planning and trusts Not necessarily in scope May be coordinated with an attorney or trustee
Debt, philanthropy, and life transitions Not necessarily in scope May be included, depending on the provider
Coordination with other professionals Varies by agreement Described as part of the model by some providers
Ongoing plan review Usually centred on the portfolio Described as a recurring review of the whole plan

Read this as a difference in potential scope, not a rigid rule. Many investment managers coordinate with accountants and attorneys, and many planners do not perform every specialist service in-house. Ask a money manager exactly what planning it covers, and ask a broader advisor exactly who performs the tax, legal, insurance, and implementation work.

The label also varies by geography. Wealth Architect South Africa lists fiduciary services, tax advisory, wills, deceased-estate administration, trust administration, and financial education among its services. (Wealth Architect South Africa, “Frequently Asked Questions”) That mix is very different from a US investment-adviser model, even though both use the same phrase. Lumida Wealth also uses “The Wealth Architect” as a page heading, (Lumida Wealth, “The Wealth Architect”) but the scope, credentials, and fees of any firm should be taken from its own disclosures rather than inferred from the wording.

When a wider planning conversation may be worth having

Some life and money events involve several decisions that affect each other. WealthArchitects gives examples of situations where clients seek integrated planning, including:

These are prompts to assess whether integrated advice would help. They are not a diagnosis, and they do not mean everyone in these situations needs a particular advisor. A practical question to ask yourself is: “Do these decisions affect one another, and is someone responsible for helping me see the links?” If the answer is yes, ask prospective providers how they coordinate the investment, tax, legal, insurance, and estate specialists involved. Coordination does not mean the advisor is qualified to perform each specialist’s work.

WealthArchitects’ founder and chief wealth architect, Mark T. Johnsen, describes the firm’s aim this way: “We help clients manage not only their financial wealth, but the arc and trajectory of their lives.” (WealthArchitects, “Why Us”) This is the provider’s own positioning. It is not independent evidence that its approach produces better financial or life outcomes.

How to verify a provider before you hire one

Work through the following checks in writing. Verify each claim against current documents rather than the firm’s marketing pages.

  1. Written scope. Ask for a list of the planning, investment management, implementation, and monitoring services included, and what is excluded.
  2. Credentials and registration. Check the professional’s registration and disciplinary history in your own jurisdiction. Do not infer qualification from the words “wealth architect.” If you are in the United States, the firm’s Form ADV and Form CRS are the main public disclosures to read.
  3. Fiduciary duties. Ask when fiduciary duties apply, which services they cover, and whom the provider represents in each case.
  4. Compensation and conflicts. Ask how the advisor is paid and whether commissions or product relationships create conflicts. WealthArchitects states that it is client-paid, that it has fiduciary obligations, and that it does not receive commissions on financial products or transactions. (WealthArchitects, “Why Us”) Confirm these statements against the firm’s current Form ADV, Form CRS, fee schedule, and client agreement.
  5. Total cost. Ask about every charge that may arise, including investment, custody, product, tax, legal, and third-party fees, not only the advisory fee.
  6. Coordination. Ask who communicates with your accountant, attorney, insurer, or trustee, and who carries out each recommendation.
  7. Investment approach. Compare how the firm handles risk management, diversification, costs, tax considerations, and rebalancing. An integrated label does not predict investment performance.
  8. Review cadence. Ask how often the plan is reviewed and which events, such as a change in income, a sale of a business, or a family change, trigger an update.

What the evidence does and does not show

The sources available for this topic are mainly provider websites. They explain what each firm says it offers, but they are not independent studies of service quality, outcomes, or general industry practice. No comparative statistic shows that a wealth architect model beats a money manager model, and no figure in this article should be read as a measured benefit.

Rules on credentials, fiduciary duty, taxation, and estate administration vary by country and sometimes by state or province. The right questions and the right disclosures depend on where you live, so confirm local requirements before relying on any provider’s description of its services.
