Abhishek Singh says colleagues joked about his former manager’s ageing grey Hyundai Santro when he was 22 and working at his first company. He later learned, by his account, that she had retired at 46. The story is a reminder that a car can reveal what someone drives—not what they can afford or how they manage money.
What did Singh say happened?
In a social-media post recounted by Hindustan Times, Singh recalled that colleagues made fun of his manager’s old grey Santro. He said he later learned she had retired at 46. Singh also suggested in the post that she had been saving and investing for her family’s future, while coworkers had called her a miser.
Those details are Singh’s recollection, not independently established facts. Hindustan Times explicitly said it had not independently verified or endorsed the user-generated claims. Moneycontrol also reported the same X-post anecdote; it is another account of the post, not separate confirmation of the manager’s finances, retirement, or motives.

Very little on its own. A car is a visible possession, but it does not tell an observer why its owner chose it, what other financial priorities they have, or what their overall circumstances are. An older vehicle may prompt assumptions about its owner; those assumptions are not evidence.

Singh’s reported reflection was: “Since then, personally, I have decided never to judge anyone because of the car they drive, as that’s what people choose to show the outside world.” It is a personal conclusion drawn from his account, not expert advice or a finding about how people generally build wealth.
What the anecdote does—and does not—show
The story makes a narrow point about the limits of judging people by visible spending. It does not establish that the manager retired early because she drove an old car, that the car choice caused a particular financial outcome, or that readers could reproduce her reported outcome by following the same choices. The account provides no verified saving or investing plan and no data showing how common such an outcome is.

Singh’s other reported line—“Looks like the joke was on all of us as she was saving and investing for her family’s future, while we all were calling her a miser”—should be read as his interpretation of what he later heard, not as verification of her investments or intentions. The takeaway is simpler: visible consumption is an unreliable basis for judging someone’s wealth.
