A cache miss is not always a missing key. It can mean an expected first read, an unreadable cached value, an expired hot entry, a request for nonexistent data, a cache outage, or a timeout that hides a healthy cache. In his DEV Community article, “We Broke Prod With Cache Misses So You Don’t Have To,” Satyaki Saha describes these distinct failure modes and the safeguards he recommends. The account is a practitioner’s explanation, not an independently audited postmortem; it does not establish incident metrics or measured results.
Why “cache miss” is too broad a diagnosis
When an application does not get a usable value from its cache, the next action may be to query the database. That fallback is often sensible for one request, but repeated or simultaneous fallbacks can raise database load. Saha’s central operational point is to identify why the cache did not serve the value before treating every case as an ordinary absent-key miss.
His article says cache misses and the system crashes they cause are something a developer may face when implementing caching. That is the author’s characterization, not a measured frequency or a general statistic. The article listing identifies Saha as author and displays “Posted on Sep 26,” but gives no year. It does not establish an incident date, traffic volume, outage duration, database impact, or quantified result from the proposed fixes.

Six cache failure modes and what to do about them
1. A cold miss: the first request for a value
If a key has never been cached, the first request is expected to miss. With the cache-aside pattern described by Saha, the application reads the value from the database, writes it to the cache, and returns it. Later requests can use the cached copy until it expires or is evicted.

This flow only helps subsequent reads if the cache write succeeds and the key and serialization format are consistent. Logging ordinary misses separately from cache errors helps show whether an absent key is normal first-access behavior or part of a different failure.
2. A cached value exists but cannot be deserialized
In this case, bytes are present but the application cannot turn them into the expected value. A schema change, version drift, or bad write can make cached data unreadable. That is a compatibility or read failure—not the same condition as a key that is absent.
- Version cache keys when the stored schema changes, so new code does not interpret an old representation as if it were current.
- Log deserialization errors distinctly from ordinary cache misses. Otherwise, a compatibility problem can be hidden behind database fallbacks.
Saha recommends these measures but reports no comparative test or measured reduction in failures.

3. A hot key expires and triggers a rebuild stampede
If many requests need the same popular value just after its time to live (TTL) expires, they can all observe a miss and attempt the same database rebuild. Saha describes this as a possible hot-key stampede; his mention of “thousands of concurrent requests” is illustrative, not a documented measurement.
- Coordinate rebuilding: use a per-key mutex or lock so one request rebuilds while others wait or use another defined response. Coordination adds complexity and requires sensible handling if the lock holder fails.
- Serve stale while refreshing: if the data can be briefly out of date, return the existing stale value while a background refresh runs. This trades freshness for fewer blocked requests and less synchronized rebuild work.
- Jitter expiration: vary TTLs so keys do not all expire at the same instant. Jitter can spread expiry work, but it does not by itself prevent simultaneous rebuilds for one very hot key.
4. The requested record does not exist
A request for a nonexistent record may repeatedly miss in the cache and reach the database because there is no positive value to cache. Saha suggests briefly caching the negative result—the fact that the lookup returned no record—so repeated invalid requests can be answered without repeating the database query.
A Bloom filter may also help reject keys that are definitely absent before an expensive lookup. It is a membership filter, not a store of full records; it can produce false positives, so a “possibly present” result still needs the normal lookup. Its usefulness depends on the key space and the cost of maintaining the filter. A short-lived negative cache is often more direct when the application can safely cache absence, while a filter is worth considering when rejecting invalid keys at scale is important.

5. The cache cluster is unavailable
If the whole cache is down, fallback reads can shift a large share of application traffic onto the database. Saha recommends cache high availability using approaches such as Sentinel or Cluster-style configurations, alongside database protections such as circuit breaking or rate limiting. A local L1 cache—an in-process cache in each application instance—can provide another buffer.
These layers solve different problems and bring their own failure behavior. High availability aims to keep cache service available; a local cache can reduce remote-cache dependence but may hold different or stale values across application instances. Circuit breakers and rate limits bound or interrupt fallback pressure, which can mean some requests fail or are delayed rather than reaching the database. Choose based on freshness requirements and the database load the system can safely absorb; Saha’s article does not benchmark a preferred configuration.
6. A timeout hides whether the key exists
A cache timeout does not prove the key was absent. The cache may be healthy and contain the value while the client’s request or response is delayed or lost. Treating every timeout as a miss can therefore trigger unnecessary database work and add pressure precisely when the cache path is impaired.

Define deliberately whether the application fails open to the database or fails closed when it cannot reach the cache. A fail-open policy favors serving data but needs database protections; a fail-closed policy avoids uncontrolled fallback but can make requests unavailable despite a healthy database. The article raises this decision but does not prescribe a concrete timeout policy, threshold, or retry strategy.

If brief staleness is acceptable, stale-while-refresh can reduce wait time and rebuild contention. If not, requests may need to wait for a fresh value or fail when it cannot be obtained.
- How much fallback load can the database absorb? If an outage could overwhelm it, use rate limits or a circuit breaker rather than allowing every cache failure to become an unrestricted database query.
- Is the same key likely to be rebuilt concurrently? Per-key coordination targets duplicate work; jitter targets synchronized expirations across keys. They address related but distinct patterns.
- Are bad keys common? Brief negative caching can suppress repeat lookups for known-absent records. A Bloom filter is an option when quickly rejecting definitely invalid keys is useful, with the understanding that possible membership still requires lookup.
- Can the system operate another cache layer? High-availability cache arrangements and local L1 caches can add resilience, but increase operational and consistency considerations.
Saha says his system uses logical expiration with background refresh and negative caching. Those are his first-person descriptions; the article provides no independent implementation evidence or outcome measurements.

Diagnose the symptom before changing the cache
Operationally, the useful distinction is whether the key was absent, the value was unreadable, the value expired, the record never existed, the cache service was unavailable, or the client timed out. These conditions can all lead to a database read, but they call for different remedies. Separate logs and metrics for misses, deserialization failures, expirations, negative lookups, connection errors, and timeouts make it easier to tell which path is generating fallback traffic.
That diagnostic framing is the lasting lesson in Saha’s account: do not treat a cache miss as one uniform event. Match the response to the failure, and decide in advance how much staleness, coordination, and database fallback the application can tolerate.
