There is no clear date when people began treating AI as both a work assistant and a casual companion—and surveys do not show that most people deliberately keep two separate assistants. What they do show is that people use large language models for a broad mix of practical work, personal learning, entertainment, and conversation. The “serious work” versus “just vibing” split is a useful way to describe those different uses, not a measured milestone or a verbatim survey finding.

When did AI split into a work mode and a casual mode?

No available survey identifies a moment when users started assigning one AI to work and another to personal life. The evidence consists of snapshots of what people say they do with AI, not a timeline of when separate roles—or separate assistants—first emerged.

A reasonable interpretation is that the distinction became more visible as AI assistants moved into everyday routines. The same kind of tool could help with a work draft, explain a subject someone wanted to learn, or keep a casual conversation going. That interpretation fits the reported uses, but it is not a date established by the studies.

What people use AI for, according to surveys

Personal learning and practical tasks often sit side by side

An Imagining the Digital Future Center at Elon University survey of 500 U.S. LLM users, conducted in January 2025, found that 51% named personal informal learning as their main purpose, compared with 24% who named work and 11% who named school. Among employed respondents, 46% said their main purpose was personal, while 32% said it was work. These are respondents’ reported primary purposes; they do not indicate whether people switched between separate assistants. Read the survey findings.

That survey also found that two-thirds of respondents had used LLMs like search engines, 60% had used them for amusement or entertainment, and 52% had used them for work activities. Those figures describe whether people had used LLMs for each purpose, not what they considered their single main use.

Work use has concrete, familiar tasks

Pew Research Center surveyed 5,273 employed U.S. adults from October 7–13, 2024. Among workers who had used AI chatbots for work, the most commonly reported tasks were research (57%), editing written content (52%), and drafting written content (47%). That is a clear picture of task-oriented use, but the survey does not establish that workers keep a different assistant for personal conversations. Read Pew’s findings.

Learning, entertainment, and social conversation overlap in everyday use

Google said its 2025 Our Life with AI survey included 21,000 participants across 21 countries. In its January 2026 summary, Google reported that 74% of users said they used AI to “learn something new” or “understand a complex topic,” and described learning as the leading motivation, ahead of entertainment. Google presents this as a change from earlier survey waves; it is not a universal timestamp for when AI use shifted, nor evidence that every user changed their habits. Read Google’s survey summary.

In Elon University’s January 2025 U.S. survey, 9% named social encounters, such as casual conversation and companionship, as their main purpose. Anthropic’s June 2025 analysis looked at a different unit: conversations on Claude.ai. It classified 2.9% of those interactions as affective, including interpersonal advice, coaching, counseling, companionship, and romantic roleplay; companionship and roleplay together accounted for less than 0.5%. Anthropic’s results describe one provider’s service and should not be generalized to all AI tools. Read Anthropic’s analysis.

Why the figures do not add up to one timeline

The surveys measure different things, so their percentages cannot be combined into a single trend line:

  • Elon University surveyed U.S. LLM users and asked about main purpose as well as whether people had used models for particular activities.
  • Pew surveyed employed U.S. adults and reported tasks among workers who had used chatbots for work.
  • Google summarized self-reported AI use across 21 countries in its 2025 survey.
  • Anthropic analyzed interactions on Claude.ai using its own definition of affective conversations.

For example, Elon University’s 9% figure is the share of surveyed users who named social encounters as their main purpose. Anthropic’s 2.9% figure is the share of Claude.ai interactions classified as affective. They answer different questions, so one cannot be used to confirm or contradict the other.

What “serious work” and “just vibing” really describe

The labels are best understood as shorthand for different tasks and expectations—not distinct, proven categories of AI user. In a work-focused interaction, someone may want research, edits, or a usable draft. In a more open-ended interaction, they may want to learn informally, be entertained, or have a casual exchange. The studies document these uses, but they did not test a ranking of AI products or prove that users select separate models for each mode.

Anthropic makes a related distinction between a product’s intended role and how people use it. The company wrote: “Although Claude.ai is not designed for emotional support and connection, in this post we provide early large-scale insight into the affective use of Claude.ai.” A tool’s stated purpose does not, by itself, describe every way people use it.
