The WD Blue UltraSlim 500GB (model WD5000MPCK) is a 2.5-inch, 5 mm-thick mechanical hard drive with a 500 GB capacity, 5400 RPM spindle speed, and a model-specific SFF-8784 edge connector. Those details—not just its nominal 2.5-inch size—determine whether it will fit a laptop. WD publishes specifications for the drive, but the sources available here do not establish independent test results, current retail availability, or a current compatible-device list.

Will the WD5000MPCK fit my laptop?
Only if the laptop is designed for both the drive’s 5.0 mm height and its SFF-8784 edge connector. “2.5-inch” describes the general drive format; it does not guarantee that a typical laptop SATA bay or connector will accept this unusually thin model. WD lists a SATA 6 Gb/s interface speed, but specifies the physical connector as SFF-8784.

- IntelliSeek: Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
- Data LifeGuard: Advanced algorithms monitor your drive continuously so it stays in optimum health.
- NoTouch Ramp Load Technology: Safely positions the recording head off the disk surface to protect your data.
- 2-year seller waranty
- Package includes a hard drive only - no screws, cables, manuals included. Please purchase mounting hardware and cables separately if necessary.
Before buying, check the laptop or drive-bay documentation for the supported drive height and connector, or confirm those details with the device manufacturer. The available WD support page offers general mobile-drive support resources, but it does not provide a current compatibility list for WD5000MPCK: WD Blue (Mobile) support.
What do the performance figures mean?
WD specifies a maximum internal transfer rate of 145 MB/s and average latency of 5.5 ms. These are manufacturer-published drive specifications, not results from an independent benchmark or a test in a particular laptop. They should not be read as a guaranteed file-copy rate or a direct comparison with another drive’s benchmark: real-world performance depends on the drive, host system, workload, and test method.

The 5400 RPM spindle speed identifies the drive as a mechanical hard drive. The published 16 MB cache and transfer-rate figure add specification context, but do not establish how quickly a particular computer will boot, launch apps, or transfer files.
Launch history, price, and availability
WD announced the WD5000MPCK on April 23, 2013. The announcement said 5 mm WD Blue 2.5-inch drives were shipping to select industrial distributors and OEM customers. It listed an original US$89 MSRP for the 500 GB WD5000MPCK and a two-year limited warranty. Those are launch-era details, not evidence of today’s price, inventory, or warranty coverage. Current retail availability is not established by the cited sources. If checking a marketplace, search the exact model number, WD5000MPCK, and verify that the listing identifies the SFF-8784 connector and 5 mm height, as well as the drive’s condition and return terms. Do not assume a listing for a different WD Blue drive is the same model.
What WD said about the 5 mm design
In the 2013 announcement, Matt Rutledge, then vice president of WD’s client computing business unit, said: “Our engineering team took a clean-sheet approach with 5 mm to deliver an ultra-thin hard drive that enables a world of possibilities and applications for mobile computing and beyond.” WD also described the slim product line as addressing trade-offs between capacity, physical size, and performance. These are launch statements from the manufacturer, not independent evaluations of the drive.

- Durable Design: Withstands drops and vibrations for reliable operation.
Who should consider this drive?
WD5000MPCK is most relevant when replacing a drive in a device whose documentation explicitly supports a 5 mm drive with an SFF-8784 connector. Its published capacity and dimensions identify what the model is; they do not establish fit for a laptop based only on its being called a 2.5-inch system. No independently tested comparison or confirmed compatible alternative is established here, so a recommendation against another model would require checking that model’s connector, height, capacity, condition, and warranty for the specific host.
