If Waze in Android Auto leaves your phone losing charge, don’t assume wireless Android Auto—or Waze alone—is to blame. Check your phone’s battery-use report, confirm whether Waze’s GPS problem also happens off the car display, and make sure the phone has location access. Those checks help distinguish power use from a GPS or Android Auto display issue; a charger can help only if the current power source cannot keep up.

First find out what is using the battery

After a representative drive, open your phone’s Battery usage screen and look at which apps or features consumed power. Android lists navigation and location use, high screen brightness, background apps, and connectivity among possible contributors, but those general factors do not identify the cause on a particular phone. Android’s battery guidance explains how to inspect usage.

For a useful comparison, note whether the phone was connected by USB or wirelessly, whether its screen was on and bright, whether media was playing, and whether it was charging. Compare similar drives rather than drawing conclusions from one trip. This is a practical way to isolate variables, not a Google-prescribed test.

On a Pixel, go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage to review app use and available background-use settings. Menu names and options differ across manufacturers, so don’t treat this Pixel path as universal. See Pixel’s battery-drain guidance.

Check whether the problem is Waze GPS or the car display

Waze says Android Auto navigation depends on the phone’s GPS and internet connection. Disconnect from Android Auto and open Waze on the phone. If Waze reports a GPS problem there too, troubleshoot location and GPS on the phone. If the phone app works but the error appears only on the car console, Waze directs users to contact its support team. Follow Waze’s GPS troubleshooting steps for Android Auto.

Check Location and Waze permission

Make sure the phone’s Location setting is on and Waze has permission to use location. Android’s menu labels vary by device and version; Waze’s instructions include paths for Android 12 and later. Use Waze’s Android GPS-permission guide for the relevant steps.

Run Waze’s GPS check if the phone app has trouble

Waze recommends a hard reboot and GPS test in its troubleshooting flow. Its guidance says a reading under 35 m (115 ft) indicates GPS is working; 0 m (0 ft) or a reading over 35 m (115 ft) indicates GPS is not working properly, and Waze advises contacting the phone manufacturer. These are Waze’s diagnostic thresholds, not a battery test or an independent measurement.

Compare wired and wireless Android Auto without assuming either is the cause

Android Auto supports both wired USB and wireless setup. During wireless setup, Google says to keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on for best results. That setup guidance does not establish that wireless mode causes battery drain or that switching to a cable will fix it. A user post from August 9, 2024, reports severe battery loss with wireless Android Auto, but it is an individual, unverified report—not proof of a general cause. See Google’s Android Auto setup guide and the community report.

If you compare connection modes, keep the route and other conditions as similar as possible, then check Battery usage afterward. Treat the result as evidence about your own setup, not as a guarantee that one mode is better for every phone and car.

Use background restrictions cautiously, and check the power source

Battery settings may let you limit an app’s background use, but Waze needs location access for navigation. The cited guidance does not recommend restricting Waze as a fix for in-car battery drain. Avoid changing background settings blindly; first use Battery usage to see whether Waze or another app is consuming power.

If the phone’s current in-car power source cannot maintain its charge, a compatible car charger or USB connection may provide more power. Check the vehicle port, phone compatibility, charging standard and output, and any cable requirements. Google’s setup instructions do not compare charging performance or promise that a cable or charger will offset all power use. A charger will not resolve a GPS or software problem.

Contact Waze with details if the issue persists

For an in-car issue, disconnect from Android Auto and use Waze’s in-app help instructions.
