Waymo had more than 4,000 vehicles in its nationwide commercial robotaxi fleet as of September 1, 2026, according to reporting by Axios and TechCrunch. That is the clearest available answer—but it is a dated threshold, not an exact count for October 2026 or a tally of every Waymo vehicle used for testing, held in reserve, or still in production.
What does the 4,000-plus figure count?
The reported figure refers to Waymo’s nationwide commercial robotaxi fleet, rather than every vehicle associated with the company. Waymo is its public, fully autonomous ride-hailing service, through which riders hail vehicles using the Waymo app. Waymo’s service information describes that offering.
Axios and TechCrunch reported that the fleet had surpassed 4,000 vehicles as Waymo expanded public service into Denver, San Diego, and Tampa on September 1, 2026. Neither report provides an audited vehicle census or a breakdown of cars operating with passengers, waiting for service, undergoing tests, or held as reserves. Axios and TechCrunch therefore support a lower-bound figure for the commercial fleet—not an exact all-status inventory.

Fleet totals depend on what is counted and when. A commercial-service figure may exclude development and test vehicles, while a registration total or a manufacturing figure could include vehicles that are not available for passenger rides. The September reports do not define or enumerate all those categories, and the reported threshold should not be presented as an exact total for October 2026.

Waymo’s fleet is also changing as it adds vehicle platforms. Recent coverage identifies Jaguar I-PACE vehicles and Ojai minivans in the commercial fleet. Waymo says it is rolling out Ojai vehicles equipped with its sixth-generation Waymo Driver. It also says it is adapting the Driver to platforms such as Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles, which are being driven with an autonomous specialist present; that does not establish that those vehicles are part of the commercial robotaxi fleet.
How do Waymo’s ride figures compare with its fleet size?
Ride volume is a separate measure from the number of vehicles. Waymo said it began providing over 1 million fully autonomous rides per month in spring 2025, and set a target of 1 million fully autonomous rides per week by the end of 2026. The first is a company-reported milestone; the second is a forward-looking company target, not a confirmed result. Neither figure gives the fleet size: rides per vehicle depend on factors such as service hours, passenger demand, geography, and how much of the fleet is available.
