Waymo says it does not sell personal information collected by its vehicle cameras and other sensors. Its current public materials describe cabin-camera uses for ride operations, safety and service improvement, but do not confirm that rider-linked cabin footage is being used to train generative-AI models. The 2025 story that raised that possibility concerned an unpublished policy draft, not proof that such training began.
What Waymo says its in-car cameras are used for
Waymo lists practical ride-related purposes for interior cameras: checking cleanliness, helping recover lost items, providing emergency assistance, checking compliance with in-car rules, and supporting safety, security and improvements to its products and services. These are the uses described in Waymo’s camera and microphone guidance.
Waymo says support staff may review footage in some circumstances, such as after an issue is reported, and may occasionally access live video in urgent situations. That means cabin-camera footage can be available for service or safety response; the public guidance does not quantify how often footage is reviewed.

Are Waymo’s in-car cameras being used to train AI?
The public evidence does not establish that Waymo currently uses rider-linked cabin-camera footage to train generative-AI models. Waymo says camera data can help improve its technology and services, but its current materials do not specifically confirm generative-AI training with footage tied to a rider.

What the 2025 report did—and did not—show
In April 2025, TechCrunch reported on an unpublished version of a Waymo privacy page that referred to an opt-out from generative-AI training using personal information, including interior-camera data associated with a rider’s identity. The report also quoted Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina saying the feature was under development, would offer an opt-out of data collection for machine-learning training, and would not introduce privacy-policy changes. Waymo said at the time that it had no plans to use the data for targeted ads. Will Waymo sell ads based on what its cameras see?
Waymo’s August 24, 2026 company statement says: “We do not sell personal information collected by our vehicles’ cameras and other sensors.” That is the company’s stated policy, not an independent audit. Its current statement distinguishes vehicle camera and sensor information from advertising technologies that may be used on Waymo websites and mobile apps. Read Waymo’s privacy statement.

So, Waymo’s use of advertising technology on digital platforms should not be read as evidence that it uses cabin-camera footage for targeted ads. The company’s Help Center explains that some U.S. state privacy laws define “selling” broadly enough to include certain sharing for targeted advertising through websites, apps and online services. Can Waymo hear passengers?
Waymo says the microphones inside the car are active only during voice calls with Rider Support or when a rider actively enables them. Exterior audio detection, such as detection of sirens, is a separate system; Waymo says safeguards are intended to limit collection of human voice data. What privacy controls can riders use?
Waymo says riders can download or delete account-associated personal information and manage certain account settings. It also describes an advertising-related opt-out for digital activity. The applicable controls and their scope can vary with the app, device, browser, account status and law; account-data deletion and the ad-sharing opt-out address different data practices.
Waymo may share certain data with law enforcement to comply with legal requirements, enforce agreements or protect safety. It says agencies should use valid legal process. For the details that apply to an account or trip, consult Waymo’s privacy guidance.

Keep cabin cameras separate from the Driver and Gemini
Waymo’s sixth-generation Driver announcement describes the exterior sensing suite used for autonomous driving, including cameras, lidar and radar. Its stated 17-megapixel figure concerns an exterior vision-system imager; it does not describe cabin-camera data collection, rider surveillance, AI training or advertising. Waymo’s July 2026 announcement describes Gemini in Waymo as an in-cabin conversational assistant for cabin controls, journey information and general knowledge. Waymo says the assistant is inactive until a rider engages, separate from the Waymo Driver, and does not control vehicle movement or routing, except for a voice request to pull over.
