Short answer: An IP rating describes protection under specified test conditions—not a guarantee that a phone or case is waterproof in every situation. Read the water-protection digit, check the maker’s exact depth and time limits, and distinguish the case’s rating from the phone’s rating.
What does an IP rating mean?
IP stands for “ingress protection.” The code describes how an enclosure resists solids and liquids under specified test conditions. In Google’s phone-rating explainer, the first numeral refers to protection from solid objects and dust; the second refers to water protection. An X means the code does not specify a rating for that position.
For example, IP67 combines dust-tight level 6 with water level 7. IP68 combines dust-tight level 6 with water level 8. IPX8 specifies water protection but provides no solids-protection numeral. The words “waterproof” and “water-resistant” in product descriptions do not tell you the same details as the rating and its test conditions.
What do IPX7 and IPX8 mean?
IPX7 describes temporary immersion in water up to one metre for 30 minutes. IPX8 describes continuous immersion under conditions more severe than IPX7, but the manufacturer specifies those conditions. Do not assume that every IPX8 product has the same depth or time limit.

The European Union ecodesign regulation’s IP table describes level 7 as temporary immersion at one metre and level 8 as continuous immersion at one metre or more. For a particular phone or case, its maker’s stated conditions and instructions are essential.
Compare a case’s actual limits, not just its label
When comparing cases, look for the protection mode and the exact conditions behind the claim. A splash-resistant design, a spray-tested enclosure, and a product rated for immersion address different kinds of water exposure.

- Depth and duration: Check the stated immersion depth and time, plus any other conditions the maker provides.
- What was tested: Identify whether the rating applies to the phone, the case, or both independently. A case rating does not establish the device’s rating.
- Fit and closure: Check phone-model compatibility and follow the sealing procedure. Look for damage limits and inspection instructions.
- Warranty: Read both the case and phone maker’s exclusions. A water-protection claim does not establish that liquid damage is covered.
Why two IPX8 claims may not be comparable
Depth and duration are product-specific. Seawag says its smartphone cases were tested to 25 meters (80 feet) for 20 minutes, provided each case is correctly sealed and undamaged. The company recommends inspecting the case and periodically testing it with dry material inside before use; it also says touchscreens generally do not function underwater. These are the maker’s claims and instructions, not independent test results.

The company expressly warns that this does not guarantee an electronic device inside will withstand that pressure, and says its storage products are not designed for intentional submersion. This is another maker-stated specification, not an independent test result; the two examples should not be treated as directly comparable tests.

A case rating does not upgrade a phone’s rating
The case and the phone are separate products with separate claims. A case rated for immersion does not mean the phone inside can withstand the same depth, pressure, or duration. Sea to Summit states this limitation explicitly for its storage products.
Phone ratings also vary by model. Apple lists different controlled-laboratory IP68 limits across its iPhone models: newer listed models are rated to a maximum depth of 6 meters for 30 minutes; iPhone 11 Pro models to 4 meters for 30 minutes; and iPhone 11 and XS models to 2 meters for 30 minutes. Older listed models include IP67 protection to one metre for 30 minutes. These are Apple’s phone claims, not ratings for a separate case.

Why a rating is not permission for every water activity
Laboratory ratings do not guarantee performance in every real-world situation, Google notes. Water exposure can involve conditions different from the stated test, and a seal may not remain in its original condition indefinitely.

Apple says an iPhone’s water resistance is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear. It advises against intentionally submerging an iPhone, swimming or bathing with it, and exposing it to pressurized or high-velocity water, including showering and water sports. Apple also says liquid damage is not covered under its warranty.

A waterproof phone pouch can add a barrier for an activity, but it has its own seal, compatibility, depth and time limits, and damage risks. Follow the pouch maker’s instructions, and do not treat the pouch’s rating as a change to the phone’s own rating.
